To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that i', Annen P. Lorrmzvx,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful imroveinents in in Connection with Concrete Structures, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to e device for hold ing or supporting articles such as hangers for shafting. sprinkling-system pipes, chandelisrs, electroliers and other articles, from the wells, floors or ceilings of buildings made of self-hardening plastic material such as coment or concrete, which, put in position in a plastic state, afterward burdens so that the device embedded in the plastic substance will be held firmlv in position when the materinl becomes so 'd.
The 'object of this invention consists in Aorming a holder or support, preferably from metal2 adapted to be embedded in plasie or sexnrplastie material which is selfhardening, provided with a recess adapted to contain a movable member slidably-suported therein having means for connecting xt with such instriunentalities as hangers and the like, for-various purposes, which is easily and cheaply made, simple` in* operation, strong, durable, readily posioiifed and capable of all the uses for whiclisuch structures are desi ned.
A further o "ject of the invention is to so constructthe device that the slidable meinber mavbe inserted after the device is positioned and the plastic. material in which it vis embedded has hardened.' At the same time the slidablc member cannot be removed the hanger or other instrumentality connected therewith has been detached therefrom.
lVith the foregoing und other objects in view, tbe invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be hereinafter specifically described and illus trated in the accompanying drawings which form a art hereof wherein is shown 'the preferred) emboiuient of the invention, but 1t is to be understood that changes, varias tions-and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended. lIn the drawings, in which similar reference Ennemis indicate like parte in the different figura; Figure 1 is e-perspective view Anchoring Devices for Use of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a simi-- lar view of a movable member used 1n conneet-ion with the device shown in Fl 1.
Fig. 3 is a View in transverse section o4 the device shown in Fig. l, positioned in a body of hardened plastic mgterial showing the seme in operative relation with the upper end of a hanger arm. Fig. 4 is a view similar tb Fig. 8 showing the sn e in operative relation with another type o support; and, F ig. 5 is e view in side elevation of a device showing this invention, wherein the body portion thereffi' is elongated und provided with a plurality oi' anchoring beads adapted to be embedded in the plastic material in which the same is positioned.
The device comprises a body portion 1 preferably having s rounded upper surface at the point 2 und having n flat face or lower face 3 provided with a longitudinallyextending'recess 4 having the side walls 9 thereof inclining toward the lower face 3 and toward each other to constitute a wedge` shaped abutment and to further provide s. contracted outlet 5. Extending upwardly from the rounded portion 2 of the device is an integral neck 6, terminating in im ontwnrdly-fiaring head 7 the outer Surface of which is formed upon curvilinear lines uniting with the neck. The head 7 is preferably provided with a recess 20 to receive the plastic material in which the device is to he embedded. The sides of the body portion l are preferably provided with a air oi spaced lu s 8, for a purpose to be eter described. 'I e recess 4 is formed withcou `fling member is wedged between saidY wal s when suspending an object. The couplin member l() is in the form of a nut an is )referably made in substantially the shane shown in Fig. 2, so that it is provided wit two inclined faces l1, 11, on each side thereof, approximately equivalent in 1nclination so that the nut may be inverted and be nelly efficient in either osition; and itis Arther provided with a t 'ended oper ing?r l2, for a purpose to be later described. This nut is :ll'lapted to he, slidahl'..l ill the recess -i substantially the entire length thereof and its side faces engage the faces of the recess in such a manner as to hold the lovfer face thereof slightly above tile plane of the base 3 of the device, ffl' a purpose to be later described. i i
ln positioningr the device shown in Fig. t in a ceiling. wall or .floor of a building, a temporary support or tioor for the celneltti-v tions structure 13 generally first constructed of wood to hold the saule. The devices 1 are then placed in position on this floor with their bases doivliward and are held securely in proper position by passing suitable holdfllst devices I4 through the space interveningr between the lugs 3 into the material ot' which the temporary floor or supporting nlediunl is constructed. there.` by securely anchoring the device in position so that it `will not lle moved or disturbed during the process of constrllctiirgT the tloor of self-hardening plastic nlaicrial. -When the devices l have been properly positioned. the self-hardening plastic Ill-.St'erial is then poured or placed on the temporary lioor until a suitable thickness has been produced. It will of course be noted that in constructing buildingl of this type suitable. reillforcing means may he incorporated in the plastic material for adding additional strength thereto. but as this--foruls no part. of the invention, a description thereovisbelieved to lle unnecessary. As soon as the plastic material has ,lltlit-ielltlj.' hardened to be selfsustaining. the temporary tloor is removed and tho nails or holdfast devices 14, which formerly proected into the iioor, are cut off by a suitable tool, leaving the anellorimglr devices irnlly embedded. with the 'plastic material entirely surrounding them and extending around the flaring heads l1 and into t l l against the wall or ceiling iu which the device is mounted. then passed through either a slot or open in; r 17 in the hanger arm and into engaging relation with the nut contained in the recess 4 of the device. V/'llcn the holdast. device 16 is tightened or screwed to place.- the tendency will be to draw the foot 15 of the hanger arnl lirnlly against the base 3 of the device 1. thereby dravvimr the nut 10 into snug engagrelllellt with tlle lower side faces of the recess 4. thus holding the hanger arlll securely in position and also securingT the nut itself against further longitudinal movement, thereby anchoring the hanger arm securely in position against further unintentional movement.
It will be obvious of course that if desired to shift the position ot' 'the hanger arm longitudinally ot the device. it may be easiiv accomplished h v loosening the cap screws tti sutlieiently to relieve the` nut from undue pressure, thus permitting reasonable luovement ofthe hanger arlll to a desired position,
l after which the cap screws 1U are again the recess thereof. as clearly shown in Figs.
3 'and 4, ther by securely anchoring them plane as the face of the ceiling. wall or floor in which theiY are' contained. The nuts l t tightened.
ln using the device in connection with a hanger such as, is shown in Fig. 4, which is approximately the type used for supporting overhead sprinkler system pipes and similar devices, thesupporting hanger. designated by the reference numeral 1S, is pref erably threaded and hears on its lower end n socket or loop 19 to receive the pipe.
In order to securely lock the not 10 in position when used in connection with a supporting nlediulu of the type. shown in. Fig. 4. the supporting meniler is passed entirely through the nut 10 and screwed against the roof of the recess 4 sullieiently lilnlly to .secure the nut 10 against longitudinal lnoveulent by frictional engagement with the body portlon of the device I. The operation just described with re ference to the device shown in this figure is also apm posltion with their bases 3 1n the same f are then taken and. inserted edgewise into the recess 4 and then manipulated so as to in Figs. 1, 3 ar'l 4 with their lateral faces in cooperating relation with the. inwardlyinclined faces of. the recess. .llle nuts 11, as already described, may be shifted longi- .'tudinally of the device to bring them into proper position to register with the openings in devices to he supported thereon, or in a position to receive t plieahle where it is desired to support the upper end of a gas chandelier or e ectrolier, the clamping:T action of the saule being obtained hy forcin; lr the upper end of the sup f porting' lllediuzu against the roof of the recallse them to assume the, position showng e threaded ends of f hangers or other suitable fixtures for which i the form the supporting element.
In Fig. is shown the, upper end of a l hanger such as is used for supporting pulleys having the foot or base 15 resting' against the base 3 of the device 1 and also cess 4.
lt will be obvious that, instead of nml:- ing;r the device as shown in Fig. 1, it may be extended as shown in Fig. 5, wherein the` body portion is elon ated and provided with a plurality of heat s 7, both for the purpose of strengthening the entire structure and more tirnllyenlhedding it ink the Selfhardening material in the ceiling, walls or floors of buildings as well ns to permit greater play or tmvel of the nut contained in the reress formed therein, thereby securingl `realer freedom of movement to a. device supported thereby in order to adjust it or enable its use in connection with a. device holt or cap screw 1G is i g "i i which would not bei permitted movement enough by the use of the shorter device sbownin Figs. l, 3 and Vfhut I daim and desire to Secure by Let- 5 1ers Pufcn, is:- v
