RECEPTACLE FOR MILK-BOTTLES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, itlnltl.
Application filed June 22, 1999. Serial No. 503,742.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr M. BRUssAU, citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Receptacles for Milk-Bottles and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in receptacles of that type provided on the exterior of a building and arranged to have milk or other articles or commodities deposited therein by the tradesman, so as to permit of the same being conveniently delivered without the liability of being stolen before they are taken in by the householder.
The object of the present invention is an improved receptacle of this character which is provided with a door that is locked in a peculiar manner and is opened by a particular form of key carried by the tradesman, the receptacle being so arranged that the articles may be removed therefrom by the householder without the necessity of unlocking the door of the receptacle.
With these and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features of in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof; and, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 9..
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
My improved receptacle is constructed of metal or other suitable material and is of rectangular form and of any convenient size. The receptacle comprises a top 1, a bottom 2, and spaced vertical sides 3. A door 4 is provided at the front of the receptacle and is hinged at its upper end, as indicated at 5, and is arranged to be positively swung upwardly and outwardly under the influence of a flat spring 6, to assume an open position, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. The receptacle is open at its rear side, as inclicated at 7. Located within the receptacle in slightly spaced relation to the bottom 2 is a false bottom 8, upon which the milk bottles or other articles are placed.
9 designates a horizontally disposed latch bar which is provided at corresponding in termediate points with oppositely disposed gudgeons 11 that are journalcd in the false bottom and real bottom respectively to mount the latch bar therebetwcen, so as to be susceptible of turning about a vertical axis. The lower gudgeon passes through the bottom 2 and has a socket 12 opening outwardly therethrough, the socket extending axially of the latch bar and being angular 1n cross section and arranged for the reception of the shank of a particular key that is insorted therein to operate the latch bar. ()ne end of this latch bar is notched, as indicated at- 18, and is held at the forward side of the receptacle through the medium of a spring 14 hearing thereagainst and pressing the opposite end of the latclfbar against a stop 15. The notched end of the latch bar is arranged to snap into engagement with a catch 16 that is secured to the swinging end of the door 4, and in the closed position thereof is inserted between the false bottom 8 and the bottom 2 (see Fig. 3).
In the use of the receptacle the same is secured to the door jamb 17 by means of fastening elements driven through one of the sides 3, the door 18 being arranged in its closed position to close the open rear side 7 of the receptacle. In practice, the door 4 of the receptacle is kept locked, so as to prevent access to the receptacle by unauthorized persons and insure against empty milk bottles being stolen, or rubbish being deposited in the receptacle by mischievous persons. The tradesmen who are to have access to the receptacle are provided with keys that lit the socket 12. In unlocking the door the key is inserted in the socket 12 and turned in one direction, thereby retracting the notched end 13 of the latch.
bar against the force of the spring 14 and releasing the catch 16. The door 4 is then positively swung into an open position by the spring 6. After the bottle of milk has been placed in the receptacle the door 4 is closed, whereupon the latch bar 9 snaps into engagement with the catch 16 to lock the door. When the door 18 is opened by the householder, the same is swung away from the open rear side 7 to admit of the milk being expeditiously removed from the receptacle without the necessity of unlocking the door 4:.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided an improved receptacle which considerably facilitates the delivery of milk and like household necessities; which is very eflicient in operation and embodies to a marked degree the characteristics of simplicity, durability and strength; and which may be easily and cheaply manufactured and readily applied to a door frame.
It is to be understood that this invention is not limited to use in connection with a door, but is also susceptible to application to a window or the like.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A receptacle of the character described, comprising a top, bottom and sides, a door arranged at one side of the receptacle and pivoted at its upper end and provided at its lower end with a catch, a false bottom fixed within the receptacle, and a spring actuated latch bar for engaging with the catch. pivotally mounted between the false bottom and the real bottom.
2. A receptacle of the character described,
comprising a top, bottom and sides, a door arranged at one side of the receptacle and pivoted at its upper end and provided at its lower end with a catch, a false bottom fixed within the receptacle, and a latch bar for engaging with the catch arranged between the false bottom and the real bottom and provided with gudgeons journaled therein, one of the gndgeons passing through the real bottom and being adapted for engagement with a key.
A receptacle of the character described, comprising a top, a bottom, and sides, a door arranged at one side of the receptacle and pivoted at its upper end and provided at its lower end with a catch, a false bottom fixed within the receptacle, and a latch bar for engaging with the catch arranged between the false bottom and the real bottom and provided with gudgeons journaled therein, one of the gndgeons passing through the real bottom, and the latch bar being formed with an axially disposed socket opening outwardly through the said gudgeon and arranged for the reception of a key.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH M. BRUSSAU.
itnesses LOUIS E. ARoxsoN, THOMAS E. CHAPMAN.
