1 CIGAR-TIP CUTTER.
I, Specification of het ters Patent. Application filed. March 9,, 1907. seria no. 361,492.
" Patented Mar. 1, 19.10.
['0 concern-T, I Be t known that L-Lours E. Gnunreus,
it tib ae i1 (if the UnitedlStates, residing at Nieivai k, inthecounty of Essex and State 0 anduseful Improvementsin Cigar-Tip Cutters; andl'do hereby declare the following to. baa ful1',.clear, and exact description of the-invention, such as will enable 'others skilled inthfl. art'to which it appertains t0 make and use the same, reference being had to thefaccom anying'drawings, and to characters' of re erence' marked thereon, which form'apart of this specification.
I T1113 invention hasreference, generally, to
and simple construction, and one which can be easily nanipulated,"and which may be greatly enhanced by beingemb'ellished with ornamentations. i
Thisjnventibn consists; therefore, in the novel cigar-tip cuti er hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, the invention consists-in the various arrangements. and combination of parts, as well as in the details-of the construction of the saine, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described'in the following specification and then finally embodied in-the clauses of the clairn which is" appended to and which forms an partof this specification. p a The invention is clearly illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a cigar-tip cutter, embodying the principles of this invention, with the cutter mechanism of the device inclosed within the hollow or enambered body or shell; Fig. Qis a top view of the same; and Fig.3 is a bottom vlewjof .the cutter, .both-said Figs. 2 and 3 being inade on an enlarged scale. Fig. his a face View essential of the cigar-tip cutter, showing the cutting mechanism in itsoperated position prior to.
being closed down on the tip or end of the tin-Jersey, have invented "certain new,
cigar which is to'be inserted in the centrally vbered'ho dy or shell of the device. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional representation of the .device',said section'beingtaken on line 5-5 on ine 6-'6 in Fig.4; and Fig. 7 f is a crosssec'tion takenon line 7-7 in said Fig. i, lookin in the direction of ,the arrow.
' Similar charactersof reference are em cate thegcorresponding' parts.
Referring now to the several the complete cigar-tip cutter, the same comwhichfconsists of a pair of disk-shaped plates or members 2 and 3.united along a- .portion of their .m'arginal circumferential 'edges'by an 'arc shaped wall, the parts being made or assembled in such'a manner that an opening 5 will be provided, substantially as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 of the draw or perforation 6, the two-openin s being lothe'drawings. Extending laterally and suitably connected withthe .i-narginal rib orwall at is a-ring-shapedmember 7', thismember ranged upon apost or stud 9, between the two inner flat faces of said disk-shaped of 'said plates, or members, substantially. as shown,*isj a plate lO which is provided with a. cutting-edge 11, in the manner illustrated more particularly in Figs. 5, 6" and 7 of the ,ing 5,, so thatitscutting-edge can be moved across the two openings. or-holes 6 ofthe of a cigar, said 'plate 10-being made with an conforms to the arcshapedmarginal edgeportions --locate d"at the opening 5 between the in Fig. .2,the cutting mechanisin being shown n lan. Fig.5 isa transversesect-lon taken figures of the ,tlrawings, the referencercharacter 1 "indicates prising a chambered or hollow body or shell members or plates 2 and .3, for the purpose of cutting-0r severing the inserted tip or end perforated portion of the hollow-orchamploy d in the above described views to indi- -30 ings. Each disk-shaped plate or -- member 2 and 3, is made with a centrally disposed hole cated directly opposite each other in .the manner illustrated in the several figures of] being provided with an opening 8,- preferably of an oval or elongated configuration, to provide a suitable-finger-piecefor the insertion of the thumb in saidopeningor hole 8 as" will be clearly evident.' Pivotally ar-.
'95 plates or'members 2 and 3, said post or stud I 9 being located at or near the marginal edges fidramngs. This'plate'is' movably arranged in the previously mentioned marginal openarc-shaped marginal edge-portion 12 which a two plates ormembers 2; and 3, so that the said arc-shaped edge-portion 12 will close said opening 5 when the parts are in the-- position indicated i-n the Figs. 1, 2 and '3 of the drawings Extending laterally from and suitably connected with portions of tlte. a to shaped portion .12 of the plate 10 is a ring shaped member l3, said'member being provided with an opening or hole 14, preferably of an oval or elongated configuration, which provides a suitable finger-piece for the insertion of a finger therein. The said plate 10 may be rovided with an opening 15; and, at the 1unction'of the lower end-poi; tion of the ri-ng-shaped member 13 and 'the marginal edge 17 of the plate 10, an offset 16 may be provided, which is brought against the point 18 of the wall or rib 4:,
and acts as a stop which limits'the inward movement of the cutter-mechanism which is pivotally arranged between the .-.two diskshaped members 2 and 3. To limit the outward movement of the cutter mechanism, the plate 10, maybe provided with a curved and elongated slot or opening .19, substantially as shown, ill WhiClfLlS arranged a pin or stud 20, having itsend-portions suitably connected with the two. disk-shapedplate's or members, substantially in the manner illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings Themanner of operating thezzeutter mechanism, when it is desired tosever the tip orend of a cigar is very 'simple and will be readilynnderstood from an-ins'pection of the s'eVeralfig'ures, of the drawings. All that is necessary is-to' insert the thumb in the opening 8 of the ring shaped member 7 andthe finger in the opening 14 of the ring-shaped member 13, whenthe-parts are in theii respective positions illustrated in Fig, 1. Then, by spreading the thumb and finger, the plate will be moved upon its fulcrum formed by the postor' stud 9 to the positions indicated in Figsu l, 5 and 6 of the drawings, the stud or post- '20 limiting the pivotal motion of the plate in its outward direction, The end of the cigar may then be placed and inserted in the two openings 6, and by closing--the thumb and finger, the plate 10 is moved-in the opposite direction, so that its cutting edge in passing across the two openings '6 will clearly cut or sever the end or tip of the cigar, and the cutter mechanism at the same time is returned to its closed posilion indicated inFig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description of my present invention, it will be seen that I have devised a simple, neat and durable devloe which can be'readily mani 'ulated, which is both ornamental and usefu and which has no protruding sharp edges which might possibly lacerate the fingers, or tear or cut into the fabric of the pocket when the device is closed and carried therein.
pivot-post extending across a'portion 0 the marginal openingbetween said body-members, a second post also extending across said marginal opening, said posts being located near the marginal edges of said circular body-members, a plate provided with a cutting-edge, said plate being pivoted upon said first-mentioned pos'tandbeing lnovably arranged between said body-members and in said marginal opening, and sa plate being provided with a curved slot in which said second-mentioned post is arranged for limiting the movements of said plate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony, that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand "this eighth day of March, 1907.
LOUIS E. GARRIGUS.
