Description

L. Mr' WHITE.
BOAT FENDER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 1, 1909.
Patented Mar. 1, 1910.
LESTER ivi. WHITE, or LocKPoIt'r, NEW von BOAT-FENDER.
Specilcation of Letters Patent. antntd M3111', L l
Application ledl July 1, 1999. Serial No. fld?.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known 'that l, LESTER M. WHITE, a
lcitizen of the United States, residing at lLockport, in the county of Niagara, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful `Improvements in Boat-Fenders; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
'lhe invention relates to a boats fender and more particularly to the class of fenders for use on launches, yachts and small crafts. 'lf he primary object of the invention is the provision of a boats fender in which the line passing therethrough is stayed thoroughly on the inside of thefender thus preventing the possibility of .pulling-through or parting company with the jacket. of the fender.
another object of the invention is the provision of a fender of this character in which the jacket4 is manufactured from a heavy closely braided cotton fabric, which jacket houses a nlling closely packed therein in which is securely stayed a line for sup orting the fender when-thrown outside of the hull of a boat.
Another object of the invention is the provision of 'a boats fenderwhich is neatfin appearance, strong, simple of construction, possessed of unsur assed wearing qualities, and
one that is etli ient inopera-tion and 1neX- pensive in the manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention, to enable those skilled in the art to carry the same into practice, and as brought out in the claims succeeding the description.
lin the drawings -ligure l is a side elevation of the invention. lBig. 2 is a longitudinal sectionalyiew through the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. lFig. 4 is a trans verse sectional view on the line t-d of lfig. 2.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring more particularly to the drawings there is shown a fender for launches, yachts. and the like comprising a heavy closely braided cotton fabric Ycasing 5 of elongated cylindrical contour, the opposite open ends of which being closed by a heavy seine line 6, threaded through the ends of the casing to draw the same together as shown. A
Within the casing is closely Vpacked a buoyant substance such as cork particles 7, to give a light weight to the fender. Passing centrally through the substance 7, and the casing 5, through opposite ends of the latter is a line 8, one extremity of which is' formed with a, loop terminal 9, forming a hand grip for the fender, while the opposite extremity ofv this line may be of any length as may be found desirable. rlhe line 8 within the casing is provided with spaced 'knots 10, disposed near opposite closed ends of the casing 5', and between these knots 10, are 'arranged leather washers 11, whichV latter are carried by the line 8, and'form anchors embedded in the substance 7 By the knots and washers being embedded in the substance 7, within the casing 5, the line 8 running throughsaid substance will be thoroughly stayed in the fender thus preventing the possibility of pulling the said line through the casing and thereby overcoming any chance of the line parting company with the said casing or jacket.
TheV use of the fender is deemedwell known without the necessity of describing its manner of use and from the foregoin it is thought the construction of the said ender will be clearly apparent withoutL requiring a more extended explanation andtherefore the same has been omitted.
What is claimed is l 1. A fender -of the class described cornprising a jacket formed from aclosely braided fabric closed at op osite ends, a. nlling packed within said jaclet, a line running centrally through `the jacket, yand ino means formed in theV line and embedded in the lling to stay said line and prevent pullknots, and a loop terminal fornied in said ing thereof through the jacket. line Vat one extremity thereof exteriorly of 2. A fender comprising a jacket formed the jacket.
