SHARPENING IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Har. 1, 1910.
Application filed August 24, 1909. Serial No. 514,445.
Sharpening Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an implement or device for sharpening the blades of knives, 1 scissors, or other edge tools, and it has for l its object the production of an implement of this character which will be economical in cost and effective for the purpose stated.
To this end my invention consists of the construction described m the itollowmg specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in whichd Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2 a side elevation and partly in section; Fig. 3 a cross sectional view on line il of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 a lview in perspective of the plates between which the sharpening blades are held.
Like numerals of reference denote corresponding parts wherever they occur.
1 designates the handle of the Sharpener.
2 is a metal plate having prongs 8 extending from the rear thereof and made integral therewith, and which prongs are adapted to be bent over the handle 1 to secure the plate to such handle. rlhe plate 2 is provided with bolt or screw holes 4, for the purpose to be presently explained. The plate 2 has formed in its front face an inclined recess 5 adapted to receive a sharpening blade G.
7 is a plate similar in shape to the plate 2 and adapted to be clamped to the front. thereof. rIhis plate is provided with a re cess 8 extending at an angle to the recess 5 in the rear plate 2 and adapted to receive a sharpening blade 9 corresponding in shape to the blade G, which is seated in the recess 5 of said plate 2. The plate 7 is provided with a bolt or screw holes 10 which register when the plates are in position with the holes 4 in the plate 2. A screw-threaded bolt 12 is provided at its inner end with a nut 13 which serves to hold the two plates together and to securcl y clamp the sharpenmg blades between the same. A screw 111,
p the threaded end of which enters the handle 1, may be also employed as an additional means of securing the plates 1, or 1f :found desirable two bolts, as 12, may be employed,
or two screws, as lll, in lieu of the boltand screw.
As shown in Fig. 1, the sharpening blades extend downwardly at an angle to each other, and the tool to be sharpened is placed with its cutting edge between such angle, and being moved back and 'forth therein the edge thereof is sharpened.
The clamping legs 3 serve as an ellicicnt means for holding the metal parts of the device securely in place on the wooden handle.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, thc combination with a handle, of a rear plate having prongs integral therewith and adapted to be bent around such handle, a front plate, means Yfor clamping said front plate to the face of said rear plate, and sharpening blades confined between the said plates, as set forth.
2. In a device of the character described the combination with a handle, of a rear plate having means integral therewith whereby the same is attached to the handle, a front plate, means for clamping the two plates together, and sharpening blades confined between the said plates as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE B. N. DOIV.
