Be it known that l, VILLIAM B. WiLsox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delta, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful .Im1. rOVements in Ventilating Devices for Windows, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide improved ventilating means particularly for sleeping apartments, rooms, or the like.

Experiments have demonstrated that a window comprising glass and canvas all'ords ideal ventilation, the canvas permitting of the ventilation and yet preventing entrance through the window of too much cold air or drafts.

The present invention comprises prii'i'iarily a frame or closure having a canvas body and adjustable to fit dill'erent sizes of windows, such device forming the ventilating means in line with the foregoing principle of construction.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following detail description and the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view showing the invention applied to a window; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the ventilating device taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 1 is an enlarged horizontal section, partly broken away showing more clearly the connections of the several parts.

Throughout the following description and on the several figures of the drawings similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.

Specifically describing the invention the same consists of a frame composed of sides 1 and 2, a top 3, and a bottom 1. The side 1 of the frame is adjustable with reference to the side 2 by means of guide boxes 5 which are attached to the side 1 and in which the adjacent ends of the top and bottom of the frame are adapted to slide. Suitable fastenings (S are used to hold the side 1 adjusted with reference to the body of the frame, said fastenings passing through the parts 3, 4t, and 5. The adjustment of the side 1 of the frame permits of ready application of the same to a window as will be described hereinafter, and also use of the ventilating means in connection with window frames of dillerent sizes. The top 3 and bottom 4 of the frame of the device are formed with longitudinal grooves T on the inner sides thereof, said grooves communicating at the ends with a corresponding groove 8 in the side Also formed in the top 3 and bottom t of the frame, and on their inner sides parallel to the grooves 7 are grooves t) in which are seated coiled springs 10. The springs 10 are secured at one end at 10 to the side 2 of the fran'ic, the opposite ends of said springs being provided with hooks 10". The side 1 of the frame is provided with a vertical opening therein in which is mounted a roller 11.

The frame and parts associated therewith as above described support a closure or body of fabric material such as canvas and designated at 12. The canvas closure 12 is secured at its edge 12' in the groove 8 of the side 2 and by means of a rod 13. In like manner the upper and lower edges of the canvas closure 12 are held seated in the grooves 7 of the top 3 and bottom 4t of the ffl'tlll'lt) by means of rods 14, the rods being prevented from displacement from said grooves by catches 15. The opposite edge 12 of the closure 12 passes around the roller 11 and a rod 16 is applied to said opposite vertical edge 12", which rod has openings in its ends in which the hooks 10 of the springs 10 are engaged. The normal tension of the springs 10 is such as to hold the canvas closure 12 taut in the frame of the device after the latter has once been adjusted. The pur pose of the use of the springs is to permit the variation of the size of the f 'ame by adjustment and accommodation of course for proper adjustment of the canvas closure in said frame.

In applying the device to a window, the

lower sash of the latter is raised as high as possible and the frame of the ventilating de vice is arranged in the window frame in the space formerly occupied by the lower sash. The side 1 of the frame is movable after loosening the fastenings (S and disengaging the springs 10 from the rod 16. The frame may then be adjusted so as to be engaged in the guide strips of the window and held in place thereby after which the fastenings (l are tightened and the springs 10 connected with the side 2 of the frame, whereupon the elevated sash is lowered until it rests upon the top 3 of the frame.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:

1. A ventilating device for windows comprising an adjustable frame, and a closure of fabric supported in said frame, means connecting an edge of the closure with a side of the frame, a roller arranged at the opposite side of the frame and around which the clo sure aforesaid passes adjacent to its free edge, and members yieldably connecting the free edge of the closure with the frame.

2. A ventilating device for windows consisting of a frame composed of adjustably connected sides and a top and bottom, a closure supported in the frame and of fabric material, means connecting a vertical edge of said closure with one side of the frame, a roller mounted in the opposite side of the frame and about which the free end portion of the closure passes, and springs detachably connected at one end with the free edge of the closure and secured at their opposite ends to the frame.

3. A ventilating devicefor windows con sisting of a frame composed of adjustably connected sides and a top and bottom, a closure supported in the frame and of fabric material, means connecting a vertical edge of said closure with one side of the frame, a roller mounted in the opposite side of the frame and about which the free end portion of the closure passes, springs detachably con nected at one end with the free edge of the closure and secured at their opposite ends to the frame, the top and bottom of the frame having corresponding grooves in which the upper and lower edges respectively of the closure are seated, rods for holding said edges of the closure seated in the said grooves, and the top and bottom of the frame being provided also with corresponding grooves in which the aforesaid springs are seated.

A ventilating device for windows consisting of a frame composed of adjustably connected sides and a top and bottom, a closure supported in the frame and of fabric material, means connecting a vertical edge of said closure with one side of the frame, a roller mounted in the opposite side of the frame and about which the free end portion of the closure passes, springs detachably con nected at one end with the free edge of the closure and secured at their opposite ends to the frame, the top and bottom of the frame having grooves on the inner sides thereof, rods mounted in said grooves and connected with the upper and lower edges of the closure, catches for holding said rods in the grooves, the connection between the free edge of the closure and the springs aforesaid consisting of a vertical rod attached to said free edge of the closure and having openings in which end portions of the springs are hooked.
