Be it known that I, Harrie PAULUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Piedmont, in the county of Canadian and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to washing ma chines of that type in which there is a rotary agitator within the receptacle whlch contains the clothing or articles to be washed.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be. had to the following detail description and the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the machine assembled, a portion of the outer casing being broken away; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the device; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the inner receptacle, the bottom thereof being removed, and a portion of the agitator being in section; Fig. at is a bottom plan view of the inner receptacle bottom; Fig. 5 is a top plan vlew of the inner receptacle and its top, partly broken away; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of the bottom portion of the inner receptacle, and Fig. 7 is a detail view of a portion of the bottom of the inner receptacle, showing the manner of connecting certain parts more fully hereinafter described.

Throughout the following description and on the several figures of the drawings similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.

The invention herein disclosed comprises an outer receptacle or boiler 10 which is preferably of oblong formation at its bottom and substantially circular at its top. The boiler is designed to rest upon a. stove or the like and to be supplied with water for cleansing purposes, and within the same is removably placed the receptacle 11, which rests at its bottom upon a cross bar 12 secured to the inner surface of the bottom of the boiler and whereby the inner receptacle or basket 11 is held spaced from the bottom of the boiler and prevented from rotation therein. The basket is composed primarily of a cylindrical shell and a removable bottom 13. Both the shell and the bottom are constructed of corrugated material for the purpose of properly rubbing the clothing to be cleansed. Said parts are also perforated as indicated at 13 in order to provide a comparatively free circulation of suds into and through the basket and clothmg. I V

The-bottom 13 of the basket is formed in a peculiar way so as to cooperate with the bottom edge of the shell of the basket in order to properly strengthen it when in use and so that the bottom may be readily de tached from or connected to said shell. The outer edge of the bottom is upturned as at 14 forming a circular flange to embrace the lower edge of the shell. At opposite portions of the bottom 18 there are provided upwardly extending notches or recesses 13" which fit into corresponding notches 11 of the shell. The cross bar 12 fits into the notches 13 ,whereby the basket is prevented from rotation. Said flange 14: forms with the main portion of the bottom a circular channel, between the opposite walls of which the lower edge of the basket shell is received.

Any suitable locking means may be provided to secure the shell and bottom together during ordinary usage, and such means are indicated as comprising a pair of bolts 15 and 15 which are slidably mounted upon the lower surface of the bottom 13 and pivotally connected at their inner ends to an operating lever 16 pivoted at 17 on the bottom. Said bolts 15 and 15 are adapted to project across the channel aforesaid and through the lower edge of the basket shell extending thereinto. The outer end of the lever 16 operates in a slot 16 of the channeled portion of the bottom and is accessible from the outside of the basket so that an operator by swinging the lever on its pivot may either lock or unlock said parts, when the basket has been removed from the boiler. The bottom may be desired to be removed from the basket shell during the process of cleaning the device or during ordinary operation or disposition of the clothing after the same have been washed. The bar 12 which serves as a brace or support for the bottom of the boiler 10 and as a supporting means for the basket may be cut away at 12' in order to accommodate the lever 16.

The basket 11 is provided with a top 18 having a downwardly projecting flange 18 cooperating with the rim 19 at the top of the basket. The flange 18 serves to prevent lateral displacement of the top with respect to the basket and the rim 19 serves to properly hold the top of the basket with respect to the top of the boiler, the basket being supported in position in part by the flange 19 and in part by the bar 12. The agitator comprises a vertical rotary shaft 20 journaled in the top 18 and provided on its lower end with a weight 21, shown in the form of a ball. The shaft 20 is preferably rectangular at its lower end and upon which a spider 22 is slidably mounted,-said spider including a plurality of fingers 23 which serve to agitate the clothing when the shaft 20 is rotated. Any suitable means such as a pair of handles 24, may be provided to rotate the shaft and agitate the spider. The top 18 may be secured in place by any suitable form of hasps 25.

The device constituting this invention may be constructed of any suitable materials or relative proportions, and I do not desire to be limited to the particular devices shown except as may be required by the state of the art.

I claim:

1. In a washing machine, the combination of a boiler, a bar connected to the inner surface of the bottom of the boiler, a basket within the boiler comprising a cylindrical shell and a removable bottom, interlocking means between the shell and the basket bottom operative from the outside of the basket, said bar constituting a means to support the basket and prevent rotation thereof, and an agitator rotatably mounted within the basket.

2. In a washing machine, the combination of a boiler, a basket mounted therein consisting of a corrugated cylindrical shell and a corrugated bottom removably connected thereto, means to su port and space the bottom of the basket from the bottom of the boiler, said basket shell and bottom being perforated, a closure top for the basket, and an agitator journaled in said top.

3. In a washing machine, the combination of a boiler, a basket within the boiler comprising a shell and a bottom removably connected thereto, said bottom including a flange embracing the lower edge of the shell, an agitator within the basket, a pair of bolts slidably connected to said basket bottom and operative through the lower edge of the shell and said flange to interlock the shell and bottom together, and a lever pivoted to said bottom and said bolts whereby the bolts may be operated from outside of the basket.
