Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM H. STEPANEK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cash- Drawer Registering and Looking Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates to improvements in cash drawer registering and lockingdevice.
An object of the invention is the provision of a means whereby the exact number of times the cash drawer is operated for a number of different purposes such as sales, change, etc. will be indicated respectively upon separate registering dials.
A further object of the device is the provision of an actuator for separate registering means which in a continuation of the registering action unlocks the cash drawer.
A still further object is to provide a stop means for the cash drawer bolt, which stop must be operated before the drawer can be unlocked and further in providing a safety arrangement for regulating the controlling stop of said lock.
lVith these objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the device consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side view of the device showing the cash drawer in section, Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the device, Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4: is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the device, and Fig. 6 is a detailed view of the bolt operating lock.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the desk top or counter l is provided with the cash drawer 2 positioned therebeneath and the casing 3 positioned on top and at the rear thereof and designed for inclosing the locking operating mechanism for governing the cash drawer together with the cooperating registering means.
It being noted that the provision of separate means whereby the number of operations of the cash drawer for separate purposes is desired, the registers 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are assembled within and upon the rear wall of the casing 3 as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Each registering means is provided with an individual actuating lever to which is pivoted a push rod 10 having the head or thumb plate 11. The said registering means being placed in alinement and the remaining elements of each being similarly arranged the rods 10 project through perforations 12 in the top 13 of the protecting casing, while the dials 1 1 of the registers are viewable through alining openings 15 in the front wall of the casing. With a separate designation for each register, such as the provision of register a for indicating the number of times the cash drawer is opened for purposes of making change, an actuation of said register by means of the thumb-plate 11 will be manually performed by the sales clerk whenever the actuation of the drawer for said designated purpose is desired.
The cash drawer 2 is securely locked in a closed position by the latch 16 entering the rear of the drawer and. engaging the rear side 17 thereof or as shown in Fig. 2 a reinforcing plate 18 secured to said wall. WVithin said protecting casing 3 is positioned the rocker means shown in detail in Fig. 6 and consisting of the parallel bars 19 and 20 secured together by the tie 21 and preferably integrally connected thereto and having perpendicularly arranged with respect to said tie the rocker arm 22 having hinged at its outer free end 23 the said latch 16 heretofore mentioned, which is provided with the beveled face 2% thus forming a sharpened edge 25 to the latch. Said rocker means is operatively positioned within the casing by suitably journaling the bar 20 in the trunnions 26 while the rocking movement is limited by a stop 27 secured within and to the rear wall 28 of said casing, said latch depending through the perforation 29 in the bottom 30 thereof.
From the mechanism so far described the operation of unlocking the cash drawer and of manually indicating the actuations thereof will be apparent. The relative arrange ment of these elements is such that operz tion of the rod 10 downwardly will first actuate the same by indicating such movement upon the dial l l before the contacting of the lever 9 with the bar 19 of the rocker; whereby it will be impossible to operate the latch 16 without first indicating such actuation upon the desired dial. It is further apparent that the movement of any one of the levers 9 by means of its rod 10 will re sult in an engagement with said bar 19 whereupon, through the agency of the pivot rod 20 the rocker arm will be manually tilted as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 resulting in the withdrawal of the latch 16 from the cash drawer and the 'onsequent unlocking thereof.
In connection with the above described drawer, lock and registering mechanism it is desirable to provide a safety device,
whereby any operation thereof may be governed or controlled. Such a means is herewith illustrated consisting primarily of the stop bolt 31 longitudinally movable and positioned parallel to and slidably spaced from the front wall and within the easing 3 by means of the brackets 33. Said bolt is provided with an integral downwardly extending perpendicular extension 34 of sutlicient length to retain the latch 16 within the cash drawer, when said extension is positioned normally directly above the rocker arm .22, it being evident that a shifting of said bolt in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4 will result in a removal of said projection from above the arm, thereby permitting the latch to rise to the unlocking position. The described normal position of the extension Sl, it will be noted, is in the same vertical plane as the tie bar 21. The desired movement of the stop bolt 31 having been described, the spring 35 it will be noted normally retains the same in a locked position while the keys 36 are designed for the unlocking longitudinal shifting of said bolt. lnteriorly of the casing the rock bars 37 are pivoted by means of the pins 38 to the front wall thereof. To one pivoted the rod 38 of said keys 36, said keys being normally positioned in an extreme outward position by means of the encirclii'ig helical springs 39 and the free end of the other arm of the rock bars normally positioned adjacent to alining sockets vided in the stop bolt 31. Said sockets are adapted for the reception of stop lugs ll positioned therein through the alining openings 42 in said front wall 32 of the casing and said opening being provided with suitable closures as 43. From this description it will be noted that a downward pressure exerted upon any of the keys 36 results in the actuation of the corresponding rock bar end of each rock bar is 4-0 prol l l l v of said 3? and the provision of stop ll results in a moven'ient being imparted to the stop bolt, but it is evident that upon the actuation of any key in which the corresponding socket lO has not been provided with a stop lug, such as ll, no movement of the lJOll WIll result. By this arrangement the proprietor may arrange such stops -Ll-l and any number of the same desirable so that only predetermined numbers of the keys 36 will operate thus eflecting a precautionary method in that a person unfamiliar with the exact arrangement would be prevented or hindered to a certain degree in unauthorizedly opening the cash drawer.
The operation of the entire device Wlll be now briefly stated, which consists in first depressing the correct unlocking key 36, which results in a longitudinal movement of the stop bolt 31 and a consequent releasing of the rocker arm 22, which is operated to remove the locking latch 16 from the cash drawer 2 by the engagement of one of the lovers 9 against the rod 19. Said unlocking of the elements is accomplished by any pressure exerted upon the thumb-plate ll immediately after the depression of the key 36 and the registering of the impulse taking place prior to the unlocking of the drawer as hereinbefore fully set i rth.
lt is obvious that any desired number of registering means will be employed as well as the keys 36 and while the forms of the invention herein shown and described are belived to be preferable embodiments of the device, slight modifications in arrangement, proportions, size and minor details of construction may be made therein without however departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention as set forth in the appended claims.
After thus fully describing the invention and in what manner the same is designed for use, what I claim and desire to secure by LettersPatent of the United States is: p 1. A device of the class described comynising a cash drawer and a casing positioned thereabove, a register positioned within said casing, and means in operative connection therewith and extending outside casing, a pivoted bar positioned within said casing adapted to be ope 'ated by said means, a second bar arranged parallel to the pivoted bar and a central tie connection thercbetween, a rocker arm carried by the pivoted bar, a latch hinged to the outer free end of the rocker arm and adapted to project within said drawer, a stop bolt, a downward extension provided upon said bolt normally positioned in the same vertical plane as said tie connection for securinp' and releasing said rocker arm.
A device of the class described comprising a cash drawer and a casing positioned thereabove, a register positioned within said casing, means in operative connection therewith and extending outside of said casing, a pivoted bar positioned within said casing adapted to be operated by said means, a second bar arranged parallel to the pivoted bar and a central tie connection tl'ierebetween, a rocker arm carried by the pivoted bar, a latch hinged to the outer free end of the rocker arm and adapted to project within said drawer, a stop bolt, a downward extension provided upon said bolt normally positioned in the same vertical plane as said tie connection for securing and releasing said rocker arm, a plurality of shifting means operatively-connected to said stop bolt, and removable stop lugs for manually controlling the connec tion between the bolt and any desired shifting means.
A device of the class described comprising a cash drawer and a casing positioned thereabove, a register positioned within said casing, an actuating means, an operative connection for said register and extending outside of said casing, a pivoted bar positioned i'ithin said casing adapted to be operated by the aforesaid means, a bar arranged parallel to the pivoted bar and a central tie bar therebetween, an integral rock r arm centrally carried by the pivoted bar, a latch hinged. to the outer free end of said rocker arm and adapted to project within said drawer, said casing provided with a front wall, a stop bolt shiftably mounted upon said front wall, an integral downward extension provided upon said bolt adapted to contact the top of said rocker arm, a spring secured to the bolt normally preventing actuation of said rocker arm, and means for shifting said stop bolt.
4. A device of the class described comprising a cash drawer and a casing positioned thereabove, a re ister positioned within said casing, and a rod in operative connection therewith and extending outside of said casing, a rocker means positioned within said casing adapted to be operated by said rod, and a latch hinged to said rocker means adapted to project within said drawer, said casing provided with a front wall, a stop bolt shittably mounted thereon, said stop bolt normally positioned preventing actuation of said rocker means, a plurality of shifting means operatively-connected to said stop bolt, and removable stop lugs for manually controlling the connection between the bolt and any desired shifting means.

A device of the class described comprising a cash drawer and a casing positioned thereabove, a register positioned within said casing, and a rod in operative connection therewith and extending outside of said casing, a rocker means positioned within said casing adapted to be operated by said rod, and a latch hinged to said rocker means adapted to project within said drawer, said casing provided with a front wall, a. stop bolt slidably mounted thereon interiorly of said. casing, stop pins positioned upon said bolt, rock bars pivoted to said wall and adapted to engage said stop pins, and spring pressed operating keys pivoted to said rock bars.

A device of the class described comprising a cash drawer and a casing positioned thereabove, a register positioned within said casing, and a rod in operative connection therewith and extending outside of said casing, a rocker means positioned Within said casing adapted to be operated by said rod, and a latch hinged to said rocker means adapted to project within said drawer, said casing provided with a front wall, a stop bolt slidably mounted thereon interiorly of said casin said stop bolt provided with sockets and stop pins positioned therein, rock bars pivoted to said wall and adapted to engage said stop pins, spring pressed operating keys pivoted to said rock bars, said front wall of the casing provided with openings alining with said stop bolt sockets and means for closing said openings.
7. A device of the class described comprising a cash drawer, a register and lock operating mechanism simultaneously operating upon an actuation of the cash drawer, a stop bolt mechanism positioned adjacent the lock operating mechanism, a plurality of shifting means operatively-connected to said stop bolt, and removable stop lugs for normally controlling the connection between the bolt and any desired shifting means.
