A. 0. HOUGH.
MANUAL SALES RECORDER.
No. 534,795. Patented Feb. 26, 189.5.
1 IHIHHIII UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AZEL CLARENCE HOUGH, OF SOUTH BUTLER, NEW YORK.
MANUAL SALES-RECORDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,795, dated February 26, 1895.
Serial No. 524,816. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AZEL CLARENCE HoUeH, acitizen oftheUnited States, residing at South Butler, in the county of VV-ayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic Recorders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cash recorders, and my aim is to provide an autographic recorder, in which it will be impossible to forget to make an entry, and one in which the drawer thereof is held in a locked relation by its combination until the pressure of the hand of the operator, in its natural position while making the entry, actuates mechanism releasing means for allowing the drawer to be drawn, when the right combination is worked.
In my invention I provide a device, upon the top of the desk or register, which consists ofa spring actuated plate, in proximity to the recording aperture, which, under the normal weight or pressure of the hand thereon, while making the entry, will operate a lever releasing same from engagement with a rocking frame connected to the push rod of the combination, which frame controls the drawer bolt.
My invention consists further in the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
, I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1, is a vertical section through the register and autographic recording mechanism. Fig. 2, is a perspective View of the lock releasing mechanism. Fig. 3, is a section on the line 3, 3, of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the drawings by letter, A designates the casing of the register, provided with the cover B, money drawer 0, recording drum D, paper roll E, push button or rod G, and the rock lever or frame H, and H is a lever pivoted at one end to a lug carried on the swinging locking frame, its free end resting on the ratchet wheel I, which revolves with the drum, and which lever causes a partial revolution of the said drum every time the frame H is rocked.
J is a releasing drawer bolt, the free lower end of which rests in a slot j, of the drawer, normally locking the same. This bolt is notched as seen at j and the integral arm K, of the swinging frame H is designed to raise the bolt from the drawer, by its bearing against the shoulder when the said frame is rocked. The releasing bolt is guided and kept in a vertical position by means of the plate K.
All of the foregoing parts are of well known construction.
Pivoted to the ears L of the strip L is the plate M, and on the shaft m is a coiled spring m, having one end bearing against the strip L, its other end bearing against a rod N, secured to the plate M, and thus holding the free end of the said plate M at its highest upper throw or limit.
0 is a lug or screw secured to the under surface of the plate M and is adapted to strike an arm P of the lever Q, which is pivoted to a projection q, of the metallic plate Q secured to the under surface of the cover B at the points (1. The long arm of the lever Q carries near its free end a lug or pin 4", and the said end is notched as seen at r, and is designed to normally rest on a pin R held in the ends of the parallel integral guide projections R. When the cover of the register is closed, the notched end of the lever Q, when the drawer is locked, will engage over the upper side of the swinging frame, thus preventing the said frame from rocking until the said notched lever is raised out of the path of the swinging frame.
Pivoted to the extreme end of the plate Q as at s, is the pawl S which is spring actuated by means of the flat spring 8', having its free end bearing against an angular projection of the said pawl S. The pawl S is provided with notches s and s, the upper notch s,
being the one in which the lug r is designed to engage under the tension of the spring 8', when the end of the notched locking lever is raised so as to allow the drawer to be unlocked by the releasing of the drawer bolt.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood, and is as follows:When an entry is made by the operator upon'the recording paper of the drum, the slight pressure of the hand that would normally be imparted to the plate M, while the record is being made, would cause the said plate to tilt slightly, and the lug carried on the under surface of the plate, comes in contact with the short L-shaped arm P, thus causing the lever Q to tilt on its pivot, and by so doing the notched end of the said lever is caused to be released from the swinging frame, and the upper notch of the spring actuated pawl catches the pin orlug carried near the end of the lever Q, and holds it from outof the path of the rocking frame, so that when the correct combination is worked, the bolt is released.
I am aware that autographic registers have been produced in which a releasing bolt is operated by a pressure being applied to the recording paper while making the entry, thus preventing the drawer being unlocked until entry is made, but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an autographic recorder of the character described, the combination with the case, the paper holding and moving mechanism, the money drawer, the locking mechanism connected therewith, a dep'ressible plate arranged in proximity to the point at which the record is made upon the paper, and lever mechanism interposed between the said plate and the drawer locking mechanism, whereby the depression of the plate caused by the person making the record will serve to release the drawer locking mechanism and permit the unlocking of the drawer, substantially as described.
2. In combination, the case, the paper holding mechanism, the desk top provided with an aperture through which the record is made, the money drawer and its locking'mechanism, a pivoted plate upon the upper face of the cover of the case and extending transversely across said top in proximity to the opening therein, lever actuated mechanism interposed between the said pivoted plate and the drawer locking mechanism whereby the said locking mechanism may be released automatically by the weight of the hand of the person upon the plate in making an entry, substantially as described.
3. Acash recorder having in combination a spring actuated plate, a cabinet or desk, to the top of which said plate is pivoted, a lug on the said plate, a pivoted lever, which is adapted to be tilted by the said lug, and to be automatically held from engagement with a swinging frame, and a bolt actuating mechanism, substantially as shown and described.
4. An autographic recorder having a tilting spring-actuated plate, a lug on the under side thereof adapted to engage with one end of a pivoted tilting lever whose other end is notched and carries near its end a pin, the spring actuated pawl engaging with said pin for holding the rod from engagement with a bolt releasing member, when pressure is ap plied to the said plate, all combined substantially as shown and described.
5. In combination, in an autographic recorder, the spring-actuated pivoted plate M, a lever Q, carrying a lug near its forward end, the notched spring actuated pawl S pivoted to a projection of the plate Q and adapted to hold the end of theleverfrom engagement with the swinging bolt carrying frame II, when aslight pressure is applied to the plate M, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AZEL CLARENCE IIOUGII.
