CHIMNEY-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonom W. MUE- NINGHAUS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, hat e invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Tops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to chimney tops, and it has for its object the production of a chimney top that may be utilized at an elevation beneath the tops of the roofs of surrounding buildings, or upon a building adjoined by another building of greater height than the building on which the chimney top is used, and in the use of which chimney top a draft in the chimney to which the top is applied is rendered as perfect as the draft in a chimney that extends above surrounding impediments to the passage of air currents thereover.
A further object of my invention is to provide a chimney top that will provide for an eflicient draft in a chimney under all atmospheric conditions.
A further object of my invention is to provide a chimney top that will obviate any tendency of air currents or moisture descending into the chimney to which the chimney top is applied.

in such passage traverse the flue leading through the main upright member of the chimney top to the exit member. The exit member being open at both its upper and lower ends, the passage of an air current either across the top or across the lower end of said exit member will act to create a draft through the upright member in the chimney top from the flue in the chimney to which the chimney top is applied.
As is well known, there always exists between buildings and alongside of sloping roofs either descending or ascending currents of air in the absence of a current of air in a horizontal direction of sutlicient strength to counteract the existence of descending or ascending currents and in consequence of this fact my chimney top is always effective to create a draft through the chimney top and the flue in the chimney to which the chimney top is applied. If, for instance, the current of air passing across either the upper or lower end of the exit member is traveling in a horizontal direction, such current acts by its passage across the open end of the member to create a suction through the chimney top and chimney flue, with the result of effecting an efficient draft therein. On the other hand, should the currents of air around the chimney top be wholly in a vertical direction, either upwardly or downwardly, such currents of air will, by passing directly through the open ended exit member of my chimney top and traversing the horizontal neck or elbow or the main upright member of the chimney top, act to create the proper draft through the chimney and chimney top.
The modified chimney top shown in Fig.
II comprises an upright member 1 having a neck or elbow 2 and a vertical exit memher 3*, these parts being similar in shape to those previously described, and the modification differing from the previously described construction only in the fact that all of the parts of the chimney top are made integral as distinguished from the previously described construction in which the chimney top is composed of two sections united to each other.
