Description

@met elimine.
tintd gebetet CHARLES J. BEASLEY, CF PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND TAP- PEY, LUMSDEN 8U COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
l Letters Paten-t No. 94,993, dated September 21, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may con cer-n accompanying drawing, forming part ofthis specifica# tion.
This invention relates to'improvements in Vcottonpresses, having' for its object an improved arrangement of means whereby the follower may be Worked 4both up and down by the same operatingflever, working in the same way; "also, a simple arrangement for varying lthe leverage, as the force acquired is greater or less;
also, au improved arraugementof the follower, to facilitate filling the case. VFigure 1 rep esents a ltion; A
Figure 2 represents an end view; and Figure represents plan view of the same. Similar lettcrs'ofreereuce indicate corresponding parts. l Y The follower A .is jonrnalled to the rods Bat C, and works vertically in the case. l
These rods pass through moving blocks D and retaining blocks E', containing eccentric pawls F, capable of working the rods either upward or downward. They are provided with weighted handles Gr, by which they are turned either way, so as to engage the rods by either point. As represented in the drawing, they are .adjusted for working the rods downward.
The blocks VD are connected by rods II to levers I, Aat the junction of short right-angled 'arms I', which side elevation, partly in secv are pivoted to suspendingarms K of the holdingblocks, which arms are pivoted to 'supporting-lugs, at L, projecting from the case. v
The vibration of these levers will draw the follower down when the pawls are adjusted to the positions represented in the drawings7 and upward when the said pawls are .turned the other way.
When the levers are nearest the vertical line their throw ofthe blocks D will be greatest, and when nearest the horizontal line the throw will be least. In this way the throw of t-hezleveis may be varied according to the resistance.
f When the follower is raised above the top of the case ,it may be turned on its journals edgewise, as shown at K, and the rods B, on whichfit is supported,
may be turned away to oneside of the case, to admit of iilling the case throughthe top.
Having thus described my invention, A What I` claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-` ters Patent, isi- 1. The combination, 'with reciprocating rods B an dy a follower, K, of a shaft, which turns in its bearings above the frame, toallow ingress to the cotton,in ther manner described. v
2. The combination of a lever, having a fixed fulouin, vwith an arm, H, an'dmovable grasper D, to
pull the'treciprocating rods B downward, in the manner described.
3. The combination, with the depressing-device mentioned in second clause, of a 'stationary guide and.
frictional detainer E, arranged as set forth. 5
