To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. BELKNAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ShavingBrushes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shaving brushes and has for its object the provision of a rubber in the middle of the brush, and made of any suitable material such as vulcanized rubber, celluloid, ivory or bone, to be used in the place of the fingers to rub in the lather to soften the beard before shaving.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which consists of a central longitudinal sectional view of a shaving brush constructed in accordance with my invention.
A indicates the handle ofa shaving brush and B the brush which consists of bristles or hairs secured to the handle in any suitable manner. My invention consists in placing a rubber l in the middle of brush B which may be made of any suitable material such as vulcanized rubber, celluloid, real or imitation ivory or bone, said rubber being preferably formed integral with said handle A as shown in the drawing. As shown in the drawing the rubber 1 is narrower adjacent Specification of Letters Patent.

to the handle than at its free end and this form is preferred as it enables me to make the brush B of the usual size without materially enlarging the handle and the thicker outer end serves also to hold the ends of the hairs of the brush outwardly. As the rubber l is not as long as the hairs of the brush B it will be apparent that it will not interfere with its operation in forming the lather in the cup and in applying it to the face; but, when it is desired to rub the lather into the skin to soften the beard this may be done by bearing against the brush so that the rubber engages the face and the beard may be softened without touching the fingers to the face.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is- 1. In combination with a shaving brush, a rubber mounted in the middle of the brush and having its outer end thicker than its inner end.
