To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MAKEPEACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form ,a part of this specification.
My invention relates to trusses and has for its object to provide a device of that class which may be readily adjusted to fit different sized persons and in which the truss pads may be universally adjusted to secure any desired degree of pressure and a proper location relative to the rupture. In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved details of structure which will presently be fully described and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure I is a perspective View of a truss constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is an enlarged sectional view through one of the truss pads and adjustable brackets. Fig. III is an enlarged View in rear elevation of one of the back pads. Fig. IV is a sectional detail view of one of the tips, its collar and screw.
Referring more in detail to the parts l and 1 designate body bands which are preferably constructed of spring metal and are oppositely curved. Bands 1 and 1 are each provided at their forward ends with the shanks 2 having conical tips 3 upon which the collars 4 are adapted to revolve; such collars being held from longitudinal displacement by the washers 5 on the screws 5, which latter project through the washers into sockets in the ends of the shanks 2, so that their heads tighten against the outer faces of the washers.
On each of collars 4 is a shank 6 upon which is revolubly mounted the sleeve 7 of the forward truss pad 8, such sleeve being adapted for free revoluble movement on the shank but provided with a set screw 9 by means of which it may be anchored in a desired position thereon.

pad 8. On the inner end of lug 10 is a buffer plate 12 which is adapted for impingement against one end of the coil spring 13 which is located in the pad chamber and is adapted to yield under pressure from either the pad or shank plate, in order to provide a yielding cushion for the ruptured part.
The set screw 9 by which the collar 7 is anchored on the shank 6 preferably projects some little distance beyond the collar and serves as an attaching post for the buckle 1 1 of the front strap 15 by which the forward ends of the body bands 1 and 1 are connected, the strap 15 being adjustable in the buckles to adapt the truss to different sized persons and to vary the position of the forward truss pads. Each of the rear pads 16 is mounted on its band 1 by means of a collar 17 having a set screw 18 by which the collar is anchored in the desired position and to which the buckle 19 of the rear strap 20 is attached. The strap 20 is also adjustable, for the same purpose mentioned relative to the forward strap.
The pads 8 and 16 may be constructed in any suitable manner, preferably that shown in the drawings, although any of the pads in ordinary use may be combined with my improved parts.
When in use the front and back straps are adjusted to hold the body bands in proper position and the front pads 8 adjusted forward or back on the conical shank 3, the screw 5 being tightened against the outer end of the cone 1 when the pad is in the proper position to force the cone collar over the shank and bind same firmly thereagainst to prevent longitudinal displacement of the parts, while the truss is in use. Having been adjusted at a proper angle on the shank 3, the pad is moved laterally to secure a desired pressure on the ruptured part and the collar 7 made rigid on the shank 6 by tight ening the set screw 9. After the primary adjustment, no further adjustment of the pads is necessary as they may be returned to their same position upon each replacement of the truss.
By providing the double body bands, each forward pad is held in place by the band to which it is attached independently of the other, thereby obviating displacement of one of the pads from pressure upon the op posite band, although a union of the entire device is effected through the resilient front and back straps. By providing the double adjustment for the forward pads, the angle of the pad may be varied without altering the radial adjustment, and a more perfect final adjustment thereof secured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a truss, a body band having a conical tip offset to provide a. shoulder at its inner end provided with a threaded socket at its free end, a conical collar carried by said tip, a screw carried in the tip socket, a washer carried by the screw shank and held against the end of the tip and collar 15 by the screw head, a shank on and integral with said collar, and a pad adjustably mounted on said shank.
