To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID E. BoWN, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sockets for Incandescent Electric Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to sockets for incandescent electric lamps, and has special reference to what are known as security snap sockets. r
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and efficient form of a socket o'f` this class whereby the top or cap when attached to the body or casing by the usual -joint connection, will be securely held in place until it is desired to release the same.
My invention consists, generallystated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved socket, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly. broken away ot a socket embodying my invention. F ig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Fig. isa like view showingv some otthe parts in full lilies and with the key in position to release the cap from the casing. Fig. 4.- is a detail view ot' the inside ot the ap showing the key and its seat. Fig. is a sectional view, partly in full lines, showing another iorm of my invention.

As illustrated in the drawing 1 represents the usual metallic top or cap of the socket, which is provided with the usual threaded nipple 2 through which the usual wires lead from their connections within the socket, and such cap fits over the usual inetallic outer shell or casing 2. A head base or block of insulating material 3 is confined in any suitable manner within the cap 1 and casing 2, and it carries the usual threaded metallic inner shell 4l. at the lamp end of the socket. A lining 5 of suitable insulating material is secured to and within the casing 2 and it extends between said casing and the inner shell 4.
The cap l is connected to the body or casing 2 by mea-ns of lugs or headed pins which extend inwardly from said cap, and when the cap is placed in position on the casing the said pins will pass through the vertical portions 7 oi? the slots 7 in the up per end of said casing. so that when the cap is turned such pins will enter the horizontal portions 7 of said. slots and 'thereby snpport the cap in position on the casing by this usual bayonet jointconnection.
ln order to hold or secure the cap l in its connected position on the shell or casing 2 `spring means are employed in connection with said cap, and when the usual key 8 is used in the socket prete -ably in conjunction therewith, Such means being the use ot' a spiral spring 9 seated in the block 3 at one end and engaging under the rod or spindle 8' at its other end. In such case the key 8 is arranged in any suitable manner at its inner end to enable the same to be moved longitudinally at the socket at its outer end and its spindle 8 moved within slots 1l. and l2 in the cap 1 and casing 2 respectively and registering with each other when the cap in position, so that when the said cap is being placed on the said casing for positioning, the said key can be depressed by its spindle 8 moving in the slot 12, and the spring 9 engaging with said spindle will be compressed thereby through the grasping of the handle or thumb piece 10 of said key, as shown in Fig. 3. After this is done and the cap 1 has been placed in position on the cas ing 2 by turning as before. described, the key 8 is released and the spindle S ot the same -will be forced 'along thc slot 12 in said casing and into the slot 11 in the said cap by the compression on the spring 9 being thus released, so that said spindle will be thus held within said slots by iid spring and thereby hold the cap in its position on the casing. It' desired, the spindle 8 or' the key S can be provided with lugs 1.3 on each side of the same tor fitting within an enlarged portion '12%' in the slot 11 in the cap 1. as shown in Fig. il. so that when the said kry is in engagement with said slot as before scribed, and the key turned in operating, t said lugs engaging with said enlarged portions of saidY slot will assist in holding the cap 1 in place on the casing 2.
Then it is desired to remove the cap l from the casing 2, the key S is turned so that the lugs 13 on the spindle 8 are in line with the slots 11 and 12 and then upon said key being depressed as before described and being so held, the cap 1 can be turned, so that the pins 6 on .the same will move along the horizontal portions 7 of the slots 7 in the casing 1 to a position opposite the Vertical portions 7 in said slots, when the said cap f can beremoved by passing the said. pins through said vertical portions.
In ig. 5 my improved device for holding the cap l in position on thel casing 2 is shown as applied to a keyless socket, in which the spring means is in the form of a leaf spring 14 bent to L-.shape and having a lip 14 at the outer end on one portion for passing through and lfitting Within the slots 11 and 12 in said cap and casing respectively, When the cap is in position. The inner end of this spring 14 is secured to the upper face of the block 3, and the other portion of said spring carrying said end is adapted to be seated in a recess 15 in said face, Which is provided with an inclined bottom 16, so that when the said spring is depressed from engagement with the slot 11 in the cap 1 to free said cap through pressure in grasping the lip 14 the said lip will move Within the slot 12 in the casing 1 and the portion of said spring carrying said lip will move Within the said block, while the inner" orother portion or" said spring Will be moved ltoward the said bottom 16, and thereby permit the cap to be removed from the casing.
Various other modifications and changes in the design, construction and operation of my improved socket may be resorted to Without 'departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any ofits advantages.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a' lamp-socket, thel combination of the outer shell or casing, a, cap removably held in engagement With said casing, a block within s aid casing, and s means on said block `for loc position on said casing.
.2. In a lamp-socket, the'combination'of the outer shell or casing, a. cap removably held in engagement with said casing, a block within said casing, and spring controlled means on said block for engaging with said casing and cap to lock said cap in position on said casing.
