DUPLICATING-MACHINE.
Application led February 27, 1907.
To all 'who-m it may concern:
Be it known that we., lnxrs'r Il. Lenmar and Hanni' L. Brax, citizens of the United States, residing ai Enti-alo, in the countjvy of lrie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Dnplicatiiig-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates t0 duplicating inachines such as are used to reproduce eircular or imitation typewritten-letters in large quantities.
The objects ot' our invention are the pro` duction of a simple, inexpensive, and durahle printing or duplicating machine with which perle/etl imitation ty ewritten-letters van he produced and in n' lich stock type :any he employed which can he purchased l' at any type founders; to provide means for relieving the pressure of the impressionroller it passes over a short. line of type; to provide simple and effective means :tor reversing the hiking-ribbon; i and to otherwise improve on nnichines of this character nov: in use.
le these ends, the invention consists in thc construction, arrangement and combination of parts to he hereinafter described and partieulaiipv pointed out in the appended claims.
tet'crring to the accompanying drawings formino part of this specification, similar minier of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of our iinproved duplicating machine. Fig. il is a plan rit-iv of the saine. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line r-e7 Fig. l looking toward the. left. Fil. l is a central longitudinal :action taken on line v -iw, Fig. Il. Fig. is a transverse section taken on line af l iu. l, looking toward the left. Fig. 12 is an enlarged perspcrtire View of the type chase showing one olthe hearing extensions to receive a rihhon guideroller. Fig. 13 is an enlarged longitudinal section through one of the ribbon feedrollcrs.
T he reference numeral l designates the hed of the machine. having legs 2 at its four corners for supporting the bed at d.. prop elevation so that pa rt of the operatingmechanism may he placed beneath the same. The hed is preferably 01" a size to receive a sheet of paper of letter size7 but as this machine is intended for ollice use, it may he of any suitable length and width.
'l'he hed has a flat and comparatively thin .enter-portion 3 provided with transverse strengthening ribs 4 on its uuderside and thickened sides 5 provided with opstanding angular flanges (3 forming outwardly open'- ing grooves 7. The llat center portion ot' the hed, which for convenience of description we term the type-forni support," is somewhat shorter than the thickened sides of the bed, which we terni the impressionroller guides; "i and applied to thc type-form support. is a chase S having on its underside sockets t) to receive pins l0 extending up ward from the said support and ez'itering said sockets:` whereby the chase is he`.d in place. fhe chase comprises end-hars ll and side-hars lil extending beyond the end hars and having notches 13 at their ends in which the journals of transversely disposed guiderollers 14- are mounted.
Brackets l5. are secured to the nndersidil of the hed. and are arranged in pairs at each end thereof. Une hracliet of each pair has a stepped llore of .surcessiwly linger diameters providingr interior shoulders` lo and 1i'. Within earl: of said hravkets is a Stud 1S haring seenri'fd lo its (inter end a knurled lingengrip il); .said stud having a cylindrical enlargement or head it) at its inner und heveied at its inner edge. as at 2l. for a purpose to presently appt-ar. Bel tween said head and ihn shoulder li' of the bracket is a spiral spring 22 which surrounds .sind 18 and exerts its force against head JO to maintain said stud in its innermost position. 6. The combination of a type-bearing member, an impressitin-member. an inking- .ribbon movable between said members, feedrollers to which the ends of said inkingribbon are attached. a ratchet-wheel secured to the shaft of each feed-roller. a ratchetarm loo-ely mounted on cach of said shafts,
a stud on each ratchet-arm having a laterally directed pin, a pawl adapted to be attached to either 'atchet-arxn and having an aperture adapted to tit either of said studs and a notch opening into said aperture and adapted to permit the pawl to be passed over the pin of either stud, and means to actuate said ratchet-arms.
7. The combination of a type-bearing member, an impr ssion-xnember. an inkingribbon movable between said members, feedrollers to which the ends of said inking` ribbon are attached, brackets arranged in pairs and serving as a means to support said feed-rollers, a shaft in one of each pair of brackets having,r an enlarged inner end provided with a peripheral flange to forni a shoulder and having its inner edge beveled, said enlarged end fitting into the adjacent. end of the corresponding` feedroller with the edge of the latter against said shoulder. and pins securing said feed-rollers to said enlarged ends.
S. T he combination of a type bearing member, an impression-member, an inkingribbon movable between said members, feedrollers to which the ends of said inkingribbon are attached, brackets arranged in pairs and serving as a means to su )port said feed-rollers, one of each pair o brackets havingr a bore provided with two shoulders, a stud in cach of said shouldered bores having an enlarged inner end fitting into the adjacent cud of the correspondinpr feed-roller and limited in movement. by said enlarged end striking one of said shoulders, a spiral springr surrounding each stud and bearing with opposite ends against the enlarged end thereof and against the other shoulder in said bore, and linger-grips secured to said studs and b-aring against the outer sides of said brackets.
9. The combination of a supporting-bed having a plurality of rows ot' assembled type thereon, said rows being of unequal lengths, transfer material in contact with said type. an impression-rollcr movable over said type in contact with said tralister-material, and
means to slightly relieve the impressionroller of pressure when passing over short rows of type so as to assure an even impression at all points of the paper to be printed upon.
