To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLlAM II. lfiowmcn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Flomaton, in the county of Escambia and State of Alabama, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Line-Checks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in line checks and has for an object to provide a novel construction whereby fine coal, pine bark and other matters which may come up from the injector may be collected in a pocket adjacent to and below the strainer and withdrawn when desired.
The invention also provides a drain cock within the line check and located like the pocket between the injector and the boiler check; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation, partly in section, showing the line check between the injector and the boiler check, and Fig. 2 is a cross section on about line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
The line check A is placed between the injector B and the boiler check C, and comprises a casing A provided in the upper face of its bottom wall with a longitudinal channel A in which the ball I) rolls from its seat A at one end of the casing A to the other end of said casing, the ball being preferably made hollow and moving at one end as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 1, against a strainer F at the opposite end of the ball chamber from the seat A, the said strainer preferably projecting slightly into the ball chamber and partially overlying the pocket G, in which coal dust, pine bark and other substances which come up through the injector may be deposited. This pocket is ordinarily from one half inch to two inches long and extends up partly along the sides of the ball chamber as best shown in Fig. 1, and affords suitable space in which the matter may accumulate. This pocket is confined within the area of the casing so as to avoid any exterior projection, and extends laterally on both sides of the channel.
As shown, the pocket G, extends laterally in both directions beyond the groove A for the ball, and at its lowest point I provide the pocket with an opening closed by a removable plug II, which may be unscrewed when it is desired to clean out the pocket and in doing this the injector may be put on with enough pressure to move the ball away from its seat A and wash out the. casing and the pocket G without raising the boiler check. This will require but a few minutes time, and it enables me to keep the strainer clean at all times, thus increasing its efficiency as well as protecting it from injury resulting from the accumulation thereon of foreign matter, and it also operates to protect the boiler check in the operation of the invention.
About midway the ends of the casing A and communicating with the groove or channel A I provide a drain cock I, by opening which it can be readily ascertained whether it is desirable to take down the line check or to remove the plug H for cleaning out the pocket. This drain cock also permits the engineer to determine instantly whether the boiler pressure is on, when the apparatus is in use.
As shown in Fig. l, the pocket and d ain plug H as well as the drain cock I are arranged between the injeetor and the boiler check.
I claim:
A line check comprising a casing provided at one end with a strainer and a seat at the other endqvith a longitudinal channel at its bottom and a pocket at one end of said channel confined wholly within the area of the casing and extended laterally beyond said channel and partially up the sides oi the ball chamber in said casing and into which the adjacent end of the strainer projects, a removable ilug in the bottom of said pocket, :1 ball valve movable in said channel to partially overlie said pocket when seated against said strainer, and a drain cock from said channel between said pocket and seat.
