111d KTED STATEg PATENT @lfilfilifildl EDGAR I-I. MUMFORD, OF PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
LIQUID SEAL FOR. JOLT RAMMING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR H. MUMFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid Seals for Jolt Ramming-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to the provision of means whereby to protect the plunger or power device of jolt ramming machines such as are used in foundry work, from the dust in the surrounding atmosphere, which being filled with sand particles has a severe cutting action, especially when mixed with the lubricant ordinarily used upon the plunger, and the tendency of which dust or foreign material to land upon the plunger surface is increased by the fact that the dust is forcibly driven in all directions by the impact when the table of the machine, or moving part, comes in contact with the stationary anvil.
In order that my improvements maybe better understood I have illustrated the sam in preferred form in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of a jolt ramming machine with my improvement applied thereto, and with the table or plate removed, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 2, it will be seen that I provide a base plate 1 carrying a cylinder 2 within which there is a plunger 3 upon the upper end of which is carried the jolt ramming table 4: constructed to strike upon the anvil 5, along the surface 6.
Within the anvil portion 5 I arrange a recess or chamber 7 which is preferably concentric with the plunger and its cylinder, and has an annular opening or aperture 8 preferably smaller than the width or dimension of the chamber 7 and into which may extend a downwardly extending flange or apron 9 arranged as shown and of sufficient length to be immersed in a suitable liquid in the chamber 7, such as indicated at 10, which liquid may be oil or water.
The operation of my device is as follows. The chamber 7 being filled to the proper height with oil or water as required, so as to immerse the projecting protective flange or apron 9, the olt ramming operation will, as is clear from the drawing, cause the up- Specification of Letters Patent.

ward and downward movement of the apron 9, but without leaving its engagement with the liquid in the chamber 7, and therefore said liquid will form a seal that will protect the plunger and inner parts against the entrance of dust or dirt from the outside, said dust or dirt such as may tend to enter at the aperture 8 being caught or trapped within the chamber 7 within the liquid, on which account I provide means for periodically cleaning the chamber 7, such for example as an outlet stop cock or valve 11, and if desired, an inlet valve or connection at some convenient point as at 12, arranged so that cleaning water may be caused to flow through the chamber 7 and out of the drain outlet, of which there may be a number if desired-washing out thoroughly all the accumulated dirt from time to time.
In case it is found in operation of my improvement that there is an objectionable surge of the air in the chamber around the plunger, I disclose means to overcome the said surging comprising a pipe 13 which may be led to a position where it will not draw in any sand or dirt, said pipe acting as a vent to allow the air to be freely drawn in and out of the chamber around the plunger. If desired, the pipe 18 can be connected to a box 14 provided with a suit able screen as indicated at 15. Such screen may be made of fine mesh material or of muslin.
Having thus described my what I claim as new and desire to Letters Patent, is the following.
1. A plunger-operated jolt ramming machine comprising in combination a plunger member, a reciprocating member, a protective collar carried by one of said members, and a body of liquid, the collar being constructed to be immersed in the liquid. and form the seal to prevent entrance of dust to the plunger surfaces.
2. A olt ramming machine comprising in combination, a plunger, an anvil, a reciprocating part, a collar carried by the reciprocating part, and a body of liquid into which the collar depends, substantially as described.
3. A jolt ramming machine provided with a cooperating dirt repelling curtain or collar and a liquid with which said collar forms a seal to protect the moving parts of the machine.
invention, secure by 4. A jolt ramming machine provided with signed my name in the presence of the two a cooperating dirt repelling curtain or colsubscribed Witnesses. lar and a liquid with which said collar forms a seal to protect the moving parts of EDGAR MUMFORD' 5 the machine, and means for cleaning said Witnesses:
