Description

B. c. M ANDREWS. BOOK COVER PROTECTOR. APPLIOATION FILED MAR. 31, 1908.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
TN FTQ.
Specification of Letters Patent.
BOOK-CQVER PROTECTOR.
Fatented Felh.'15, 1914).
Application filed March 31, 1908. Serial No. 424,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BRIDGET CATHERINE 'MCANDREWS, a citizen of the United States,
residing at New Germany, in the county of Garrett and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book-Cover Protectors, of which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to a book cover protector its main portion preferablyconsisting of some inelastic substance united to an elastic material whereby the whole is rendered sufiiciently elastic to be adapted to fit over the edges of the covers of books of different'sizes and. thus protect the covers from injury or wear.
The invention is also designed to be of ornamental character.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective exterior view of my improved the same being shown opened or spread out. Fig.2 is an inside view. Fig. 3 is a vertical-section of one of the leaves of the device on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 show suggestions of ornamentation.
1 represents one of the main parts of a 7 side or leaf of the protector, and l the simi lar partof the corresponding leaf, while 2 shows the back or central portion, to the side margins of which the leaves are flexibly united. The main parts 1,-1 of the leaves may be of sections of silk, linen, cloth,
' tic portions 4 are leather or other substantially non-elastic mapreferably of ornamental char terial, but acter.
4 4 show elastic portions which may be united to the main parts 1, 1 of the leaves either by stitching or the use of some adhesive material or otherwise. As shown in 'Figs. 1 and 2, the vertical parts of the elasjoined to the outer margins ofthe back or central portion '2. The outer side edges of the parts 1, 1, as also the top and bottom elastic portions 4, folded over to form inside flaps or ockets 3, shown in section in Fig. 3, whic by reason of the elasticity given to the readily sprung over or fitted to the sides or edges of the book cover. The flaps 3 may be united at the corners in any appropriate manner, or if the material should be of sufr fieient stifl'ness' such union would not be necessary.
In Figs. 1, 4, 5.and 6 suggestions of ornaprotector may be appropriately lettered, that mentation of the parts 1, 1 are given. The general ornamental effect may be enhanced by needle-work, beading, embossing,-or in other known way. The back or central portion 2 is also made elastic whereby the protector may be fitted to'books of diiferent thicknesses. The elastic portions 4 may be varied in form and character. may be straight or curved, in the form of disks or scales or of other form, the only requisite being that they shall constitute elastic additions to the main portions 1, 1 whereby the leaves shall be made suflieiently elastic :Eor the purpose described. The main and inelastic parts 1, 1 of the leaves may be of ornamental material of a certain color, and the elastic portions 4 of contrasted colors, the general object being to combine utility with pleasing efi'ect.
My improved book cover protector may be is to say, it may bear the name of, the volume, or that of the owner of the book, or in other way be provided with printed characters.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A book cover protector comprising a non-elastic back, and side portions, elastic 'material connecting the proximate edges of said parts, and a fold or pocket at the outer edge of each of said side parts to receive the edges of the bookcover.
2. A book cover protector comprising an inelastic back and side parts, elastic portions connected to the top and bottom edges of each side part and to the inelastic back, and a flap or pocket formed in each side part by folding over the outer edges of the same.
3. A book cover protector comprising an inelastic back and inelastic side parts, elastic material connecting said back to 'the side parts and extending around the top and bot tom ed es of the same, said elastic portions and side parts forming the leaves of the protector, and flaps or pockets formed by folding portions of the sides or leaves to fit over the edges of a book-cover and be retained thereon.
In testimony-whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
