This construction affords a ready and accurate means of adjustment of position of the upwardly extending lever arm 45, The extreme upper end 46 of this lever arm is adapted to operate upon a lateral projection i7 on the side of link 15. 7When a key lever is depressed the universal bar is carried down and the upwardly extending lever arm is thrown forward, its upper end 1G contacting with projection 47 and carrying the link 15 forward. If the adjustment be such as is shown in F ig. 2, surface 2O of' the link 15 will operate to actuate the bell crank (3, 11, and there will be imparted to the ribbon guide a definite extent of motion such as to bring opposite the printing point the upper zone of the ribbon. If, as in Fig. 3. the surface 1S is opposite the projection 12 thcn obviously a greater extent of movement will be imparted to the ribbon guide to bring 'the lower zone of a double zone ribbon opposite the printing point. If surface 1f) of the link is opposite the projection 1:?. there need not be any movement of the link 15 to actuate the bell crank (E, 11 and consequently the ribb n vibrator will not 6o be moved from its no1 aal inoperative position.
There are provided adjustable stop devices to definitely and positively limit the upward movement of the vibrator, and co-incident with the adjustment of such stop devices the link 16 is adjusted vertically to determine the relation of link 15 to projection 12 on arm` 11 of the ribbon vibrator bell crank. There is a transverse rock shaft 4S mounted in bearings on the under side of carriage At its end adjacent the left hand side of the machine it has a projection 49 to which is connected a link 5() extending forward hori- -zontally and jointed at its front end to a vertically disposed lever 51 pivoted intermediate its ends at 52. Respectively above and below the pivot 52 there are jointed to the lever 51 horizontally disposed push pins, 53, 5.1L, mounted in a plate 55 located in the frontplate of the machine. As seen in Fig. 8, these push pins are equi ped with ringer buttons bearing respective j' the words Bottom and Top i. Intermediate these two push pins there is a third one 5G haviner a button or finger piece marked Stencil The pin 56 carries on its inner end a plate 57 with a horizontal slot embracing`the pivot 52 and having applied to it a coiled spring 58 tending normally to retract it.` Projecting laterally from the plate 5T respectively above and below the pivot are pins 59, 60 which, when the push pin 5G is pressed inwardly, brings the lever 5I into vertical position.
The inner end of transverse shaft 48 is at about the center of the machine and on it is a camlike stop plate (31 having two surfaces of ('{iiferent radius marked respectively a, b, each adapted to cooperate with a projection (3 on the upper edge of the arm 6 of therribbon vibrator bell crank lever. adjacent the inner end of the transverse rock shaft L18 is a rearwardly extending projection 62 to which is pivoted the link 16 that supports the front end of the horizontally disposed link 15. The parts are all so related and proportioned that the stop surfaces a, are by movement of the rock shaft-l brought respectively into proper posi` tion to limit movement of arm 6 whenthe corresponding respective surfaces 18. 20, of link 15 are active. Thus, for stencil work the button marked Stencil is pushed in' and the parts will be brought into the position indicated in Figs. 1 and 9. In this position a stop for the bell crank is not necessary because the surface 19 of link 15 is so distant from projection 122 that there will be no contact when link 15 moved endwise. If the push button marked i Bottom be pressed inwardly the upper end of lever 51 will be rocked rearwardly and link 15 will be adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 3. If the push pin marked Top be pressed inwardly, the link will be adjusted to the posi tion shown in Fig. 2. 4 lCo-incidentally with any such adjustment of the bottom and top push pins, the proper stop surface a, or b will be brought into position to coperate with the projection 6 on the arm 6 of Also ator the bell crank lever. In all the main figures of the drawing it is contemplated that the carriage shall shift. In Fig. 7, d, e indicate the now well known shift links or levers to be appropriately operated from a shift key as is well understood. The stop selecting devices are on the frame and the stop' devices, the ribbon vibrator, bell crank, and link lrare carried by the shifting carriage.

The com ination with a shifting typewriter carriage of a ribbon vibrator, ribbon vibrator stop devices comprising a rock shaftturning in bearings on the carriage and carryin'g a member having a 'plurality of stop devices to limit the movement of the ribbon vibrator, and means located in the main frame toward the front of the machine for bringing into operative position the desired stop surface.

Ribbon mechanism for typewriting machines comprising the combination of a ribbon vibrator, ribbon vibrator stop devices comprising a rock shaft carrying a member having a plurality of sto devices to limit the movement of the r1 bon vibrator, means located in the main frame i toward the front of the machine for bringing into operative osition the desired stop surface, a ribbon vi rator, its operating bell crank lever, adjustable bell crank actuating means serving to impart to the bell cra'nk diiierent extents of motion and peratlve means for adjusting said bell crank actuat' ing means (2o-incidentally with the adjustment of the stop devices.

actuating bell crank,.a stop device for positively limiting upward movement 0j the bell crank, a bell crank actuating means positively engaging the bell crank and means operated on depression of the key levers to positively engage the bell crank operating means whereby at the end of the movement of the bell crank it is positively pressed against its limiting stop hy the bell crank actuated means which is positively pressed against it on depression o ing kejv lever.

A shifting typewriter-carriage combined with a ribbon vibrator, its operatinglever carried by the carriage, adjustable actuating means for the operating lever, adjastable step devices for limitingr movement of the vibrator, means by.vvhich the operator may adjust the 'stop devices,'and an operative connection between the latter and said adjustable actuating means whereby the lat- .ter are adjusted co-incidentally with. the
stop devices.

A shifting typewriter-carriagc combined with a ribbon vibrator, its operating! `lever carried by the carriage, adj ustable actuating means for the operating lever also carried by thecarriage. adjustable stop de vices' also mounted on the carriage t'or limiting movement of the vibrator, means mounted on the main frame by which the operator may adjust the stop devices` and an operative connection between the latter and said adjustable actuating means whereby the latter are adjusted co-incidentally with the stop devices.
