GAME APPARATUS.

- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, DANIEL H. TALBERT, CLAUDE SHAW, J AMES I. Honooans, and JACOB F. Hoxn, Jr., of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Game Apparatus; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved construction of game apparatus of the type now generally known as box ball.

The nature of this invention will be understood from the following drawings and the accompanying description and claims.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus centrally broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rear portion of the device on a larger scale than in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 2, one paddle or alley pin being thrown. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of one of the paddles and the associated part viewed from the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 3.

In detail 10 represents the ball course over which the balls 11 are rolled and the usual trough 12 is located at each side of the ball course or alley. The ball course or alley is mounted on legs 13 and there is a post 14 at the front end of the device to which a resetting lever is fulcrumed and which operates to reset the device through the rod 16 that runs back to the lever 17 and fulcrumed at 18. 19 is the return ball trough.

Over the rear portion of the ball course a frame is mounted consisting of side bars 20, cross bars 21 and a rear bar 22, all arranged integrally. The forward end of said frame is supported by the bars 23 secured to the side of the alley or ball course. The rear part of said frame is mounted in the side-boards 24 and there is a cross-board 25 on top and a back-board 26.

The cross bars 21 are formed of angle iron, as shown in Fig. 3, and have forwardly extending ears 28 to which the paddles 29 are pivoted so that they can assume a horizontal position when struck by a ball, as shown in Fig. 3. These paddles are prefer- Specification of Letters Patent.

ably weighted so as to normally assume a vertical position, but they are held in that position by the spring catch 31 which is secured to each paddle above the fulcrum and is bent so as to engage the rear edge of the cross-bar 21 and frictionally engage the same so as to hold the paddle vertically.

After a paddle is struck to a horizontal position its lower end is checked by the buffer 32 which is secured under the forward end of an arm or bar 33 that projects forwardly from the cross-bars 21 and 22. A pair of springs 34 extend downwardly from the buffer bars 33 on the cross-bars 21, as shown in Fig. 5. pairs with the lower ends flaring somewhat to receive the lower end of the paddle as it is struck and hold it in a horizontal position until reset.

The resetting means consists of horizontal rock shafts 35 mounted in the side bars 20 of said frame and behind the angle bars 21, as shown in Fig. 3. Each of said bars has rearwardly projecting fingers 36 adapted to engage the rear end of the corresponding paddle when in a struck position (see Fig. 3) so that when said fingers are turned downwardly they will disengage the paddle from the springs 34 and force the same to a vertical position. Each rock bar 35 has an arm 37 extending upwardly therefrom and pivoted to a connecting bar 38, and the rear arm 37 is rigidly connected with the arm 39 so as to form a bell crank lever pivoted to the side bar 20 of the frame. The arm 39 is connected with the lever 17 by the connecting bar 40. \Vhen the resetting hand lever 15 at the front is drawn forwardly the arms 37 will be thrown rearwardly and give the proper resetting, movement to the rock bars 35.

hat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A game apparatus including a ball course, cross-bars mounted over the rear part thereof, paddles pivotally mounted in connection with said cross-bars so as to assume a horizontal position when struck 011 their lower ends, arms projecting forwardly from said cross-bars in line with said paddles, a pair of springs mounted on the forward end of each arm in position to receive the lower end of the corresponding paddle when struck and hold the same, and means for disengaging the paddles from said springs and resetting the paddles.

2. A game apparatus including a ball course, cross-bars mounted over the rear part thereof, paddles pivotally mounted in conneotion with said cross-bars so as to assume a horizontal position when struck on their lower ends, arms projecting forwardly from said cross-bars in line with said paddles, a pair of springs mounted on the forward end of each arm in position to receive the lower end of the corresponding paddle when struck and hold the same, means for disengaging the paddles from said spring and resetting the paddles, and pads or buffers mounted between said springs on said forwardly proj ecting arms.
