Beds of the class described` are designed to be used in restricted quarters, and the present invention has for its object to provide means which will enable a tufted orother mattress of any suitable or usual construction to be used on such beds and be secured thereto in a practically permanent manner, while at the same time affording a protective removable covering for the mat# tress.

Beds of the class described are used extensively in immigrant stations and like places and the cover for the mattress serves to protect the same4 against dirt and from being soiled by the occupants of the bed, while at the Sametime it serves to secure the mattress to the bed so as to permit the latter to -be folded up with the mattress thereon. v

. The cover is detachable from the mattress, and can be quickly and easily washed and kept in a clean and wholesome condition. To this end, the cover which ma be made of any suitable fabric, is provided with pockets at its ends for the reception of the ends of the mattress and with a movable section or flap intermediate of said pockets, which is designed to be extended under the wire bottom of the bed and then be attached to the portion of the cover intermedia-te its 'a pockets to firmly secure the mattress to the y ''wire'Z-fbotftom of thebed and toA com lete the coverin for the tufted mattress. Referring to the drawings, a represents. a bed frame, which is provided with a bottom b usually of wire, and is pivotally conf nected to u right posts c so as to be capable of being olded up substantially parallel with said posts when the bed is not in use, and which is supported by brackets d and braces e in its horizontal position when the bed is in use, said parts being substantially such as shown and described in the patent above referred to.

The bed bottom b supports a mattress f, which may be of any usual or suitable construction and which may be referred to .as the tufted mattress to distinguish. it from the bed bottom b, which is usually referred to as the wire mattress-in beds of this class.

The tufted mattress f in accordance with this invention is secured to the bottom b of the bed, by a cover preferably made as herein shown (see Fig.3) and provided with end pockets 10, 12, into which the ends of. the tufted mattress f may be inserted, a top 13 to en age the top of the mattress f, and a movale section or Hap 14, which is intermediate the end ckets and is designed to be passed under t e wire mattress or bottom b and detachably secured to the top 13by

The cover shown in Fig. 3, may be made from a sin le piece of fabric or blank shown in Fig.v 4, y providing the blank with slits or

22, 23, which may be folded over upon the uncut ends and stitched or otherwise secured together to form the end pockets 10, 12, after which the cover may be turned inside out if desired to avoid showing the stitched edges and to obtain a finished appearance on the outside of the cover.

I may prefer to make the cover from a single dpiece or blank' as herein represented but I o not desire to limit my invention 1n this respect, and while I may prefer to use the form of fastening devices herein described and represented .for securing the flap 14 to thebody portion or top 13 ofthe i cover,-I do not desire to limit my invention in this respect. So also I may refer to vclose the ends of the pockets, but I o not desire to limit my invention in this respect.

By making the flap or intermediate section 14 separate from the end pockets a break is obtained at each end of the cover, which enables either end of the mattress to be raised by the insertion of suitable material 25 beneath the same so asvto convert said end into a'pilloviT for the head of the occupant of the bed, after the manner represented in Fig. l.

From the above description and by reference to the drawings, it will be seen that the tufted mattress f is firmly secured to the bed bottom b so as to move therewith when the` bed frame is moved into its operative or in-v operative position, While at the same time the tufted mattress is protected by the cover from being soiled by the occupant of the bed and from the dust of the place in which the bed is located, and further that t-he cover can be readily and quickly removed Ifor Washing or otherwise cleaning the same. So also the flap 14 passing under the bed bottom Z) serves to protect the same from moisture.

Claims.

l. The combination with a bed provided with a bottom, of a mattress supported by said bottom, a cover Afor said mattress having end pockets rfor the reception of the mattress and an intermediate portion which is extended under the bottom of the bed, and means for securing the said intermediate portion to the portion of the cover above the said bottom, substantially as described.

'2. The combination with a bed provided With a bottom, of a `mattress supported by said bottom, a cover for said mattress' having end pockets for the reception of the ends of the mattress, means extended under the bottom of said bed and attached to the cover on opposite sides of the said bed bottom to secure the mattress to said bed bottom, substantially as described. I

' 3. A mattress cover provided With end pockets for the reception of the ends of the mattress, and With a movable section or flap intermediate the said Apockets and capable o't being turned back to render both end pockets accessible for the insertion of themattress, for the purpose specified.

4. A mattress cover comprising a single piece of fabrichaving a. top to enga e one surface of the mattress, end pockets tor the reception of the ends of the mattress, and a flap or movable section intermediate the end pockets and capable of rendering them simultaneously accessible, substantially as described.

5. A mattress cover provided with end pockets for the reception of the. ends of the mattress and with top and bottom parts intermediate said end pockets, one of said parts heilig detachably secured to the other to render the end pockets.simultaneously accessible for the insertion oli the mattress and to enable the detachable part to be passed under ,the bed bottoni upon which the. covered mattress is supported, for the purpose specified.
