Be it known that I, RAYMOND D. GORDON, citizen of the United States, residing at Dewey, in the county of Washington and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hitching Devices, of which the following is a specifi;
cation.
My invention relates to hitching devices and refers especially to that class of hitching posts constructed with hollow bodies in which is arranged a weight attached to one end of a flexible connection, the other end of which protrudes through an orifice in the body of the post.
The chief objects of the improvements which constitute the subject matter of this application are :-to provide an inexpensive and durable post for the purpose stated; to furnish a hollow post so arranged that the rope or chain with attached weight may be secured within the cavity of the post so that the animal temporarily fastened thereto may not be able to dislodge the weight, and
to so construct the weight retaining member that it can be readilyremoved, thus making it convenient to renew or repair the chain or rope in case it should become broken or worn.
I accomplish the desired objects by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, the details of construction being disclosed in the following view's Figure l is a vertical axial section of In improved concrete hitchin post, the lower portion of the post'being in full lines, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the gen eral external appearance of the structure.
. Referring to the details of the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates the body of a post constructed of concrete. I prefer to make the lower portion or base parallel sides, and this portion of the post may be circular or rectangular in cross section as may be preferred. The shaft 7 above said base tapers gradually to the summit which is suitably beveled as shown at 8. The post is provided with an axial bore 9, which extends entirely through the structure il'ron'i end to-end, and serves a two-fold purpose,- ii'rst, to lessen the weight of the post withoutj materially detracting from its strength, and second, to provide a housing for a hitchin weight and chain, hereinafter describe Specification of Letters Patent. For the purpose of reinforcing the post and defending the inner surface of the bore from injury by the friction'of the weight as it travels upward and downward in the cavity by variations-in the traction upon the chain when in use, I line the said bore with a suitable metal pipe 10, which extends from the lower end 0 short distance of the upper end. The u end of the pipe is threaded upon the side to receive a sleeve with internal threads 12, which engage the threads on the pipe. The collar extends beyond the pipe and is engaged by the lower end of a reducing sleeve 13, which has its upp'erorifice contracted as shown at 14, to prevent dislodgment of the weight. The upper end of the reducing sleeve 13, which projects above the top of the post, is ex-j tended beyond the body has its margins squared to form a nut 15. The pipe 10 and collar 11 are inserted at the time the post is molded and cannot be removed; the reducing sleeve, however, is fitted so that it may be readily unscrewed or reinserted as occasion may require.
