FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartshorne, in the county of Pittsburg and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in fastenings for securing fish plates to the ribs of a track rail and for analogous uses.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, strong and durable, bolt or. fastening of this character which will obviate the necessity of threads and nuts, and

The bent end 5 of the bolt is adapted to receive between its slightly spaced inner faces a wedge shaped key 6, which latter is also preferably formed from a single piece or strip of metal bent on itself as shown at 7. The straight edge of the key 6 is adapted to engage the outer face of one of the fish plates, the inclined outer edge of said key engages the inner face of the bent end 5 of the bolt so that-when the thick or broad end of the key is struck it will draw the bolt longitudinally and tightly bind the part; 1, 2

Any suitable tool may be provided for rebending the ends 8 into original parallel position when it is desired to remove thekey to unfasten the b0 t'.
- While my invention is especially adapted for use in fastening fish plates toa track rail itwill be understood that it may be used in other ways and for' other purposes.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
A fastening of the character described, comprising a metal piece bent upon itselfat its center andhaving its ends enlarged to provide shouldered head portions, and a Wedge shaped key formed from a single piece of metal bent upon. itself and inserted in the bent portion of the fastening, the.
