NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,766, dated November 23, 1880.
Application filed September 28, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. FRENCH, of Garencro, in the parish of La Fayette and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved N ut-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved device for securing nuts on railroad, bridge, and other bolts.
The invention consists of a recessed segmental washer, in combination with a segmental forked or pronged clip locking in with said washer.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the device in position on a railroad fish-plate bolt. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the washer portion of the device. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the clip portion of the device. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 7 is a front elevation of a modification of the washer portion of the device. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the same.

In the drawings, A represents a railroadrail. B B are fish-plates provided with 1011- gitudinal central ribs, a a, on their outer faces; andGrepresents abolt provided with a groove, 1), on the inner face of its head, corresponding with ribs to of a fish-plate, B.
D is the nut-lock, consisting of a circular washer, D,' having a segment removed, as shown at 0, having a rectangular recess, 61, formed on its under side, as shown, and provided on its under side with a groove, f, corresponding with a rib, a, of a fish-plate, B, and havin ga central opening, h,to fit over the bolt 0.
E represents the segmental forked or pronged clip, designed to clasp the washer D and fit against the straight edge thereof, so as to form, in combination therewith, a circular nut-lock. The inner fork, g, of the clip E is made to fit into the recess (1 of the washer D, and is cut away in a semicircle, as shown at i, to fit against the shank of the bolt 0, and is grooved, as shown at k, to fit over the rib a of a fish-plate, B. The outer fork, Z, of said clip E is designed to rest on the flat upper face of the washer D, and a broad slot, m, is made in it to enable it to embrace the nut F and hold it firmly between its prongs n n, and on the inside of one of the prongs n a notch or shoulder, 0, is formed to receive a corner of the nut F, and thereby hold clip E from being in any way removed from its position, the nut F being backed up so as to be received by shoulder 0.
The fish'plates B B being placed in position, the bolt O is passed through plates B and rail A, the groove 11 of the said bolt 0 fitting on a rib, a, whereby said bolt 0 is prevented from turningwhen drawn up tight. The washer D is then put over the end of the bolt (J with the recess D upward and inward. The nut F is then screwed on the end of the bolt (J, and then the clip E is set in place from above, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the grooves f k of said lock D fitting over and upon the rib a of the fish-plate B, whereby said lock D is more firmly held in position.
This construction of nut-lock is preferable for new work, or constructions in which the fish-plates and bolts are made with corresponding ribs a and grooves 12 but for constructions or work in which fish-plates or bolts of the usual style are used I employ a nut-lock devoid of grooves f k, and with a straight-edged flange, p, on the washer D, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, so that the straight edge of said flange 1; shall rest on the flange of the rail A, and thereby prevent said washer D from turnmg.
This nut-lock D is preferably made of malleable iron, and is cheap and durable, and most efi'ectually accomplishes the purpose of holding a nut immovable.
Having thus described myinvention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a nut-lock constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of segmental washer D, provided with recess 07, and clip E, provided with rectangular fork g and slotted fork l, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the washer D, provided with recess (1 and groove f, of the clip E, provided with forks g l, groove k, slot m, andnotch or shoulder 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a nut-look, the combination, with a segmental washer, of a segmental forked or pronged clip clasping both sides of said washer, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with the nut-lock D, provided with grooves f 70, of the fish-plateB, provided with corresponding ribs a, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination. with the ribbed fishplates -B B and grooved nut-lock D, of the bolt 10 0, provided with head-groove I), and nut F, substantially as herein shown and described.
