My invention relates to the type ofmachine which is known in the art as a setting out machine and more particularly my invention relates to means for supporting the work table for such a machine so that said table may have a certain amount of flexibility in its movement to and from the operating roll.

Another object of my invention is to so support the work table that the hide or skin may be presented to the operating or work roll in the proper manner for treatment.

The drawings show and the specification describes a type of machine particularly adapted for treating or setting out the hank portions of skins or hides but my invention is not limited to such a machine as my said invention is adapted for use in many other types of machines as will readily occur to those skilled in the art.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating a type of my invention,Figure 1 is a side elevation of a setting out machine; Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the table shown in operating position; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. at a view of a hide showing the flank portion which the type of machine shown in the drawings is particularly adapted to treat.

In the said drawings similar numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts in which 1 denotes the bed of an ordinary type of supporting frame provided with the uprights 2 and 3 and connecting piece 4, it being understood that the parts 2, 3 and 4 are in duplicate on opposite sides of the machine and supported by suitable tie rods or braces in such a manner as to produce a rigid supporting frame. driven from both ends as by belts t, 8 passing over pulleys 9 9 attached to opposite ends of the roll the said bolts 7, 8 leading to separate pulleys mounted on drive shaft 10 said shaft 10 being driven by any suitable means as by pinion 10 carrying belt 11 leading to any suitable source of power.

In front of the operating roll and upon opposite sides of the machine are mounted the slotted bars or supports 12, 13, said supports being mounted on the base of the machine in such a manner that they may be reciprocated with relation to the operating roll. In the present instance I have shown bars 12, 13 as carried on the opposite sides of a plate or strip 14 hinged as at 15, 16 to the bed of the machine.

Pivoted to the frame of the machine as at 17 and 18 are another pair of bars or rods 19 and 20 carrying at their upper ends the arched arms. 21 and 22. These arched arms 21 and 22 are preferably of metal and in the preferred construction are fastened at their flattened inner ends as by screws 24: to the top of the table 23 as shown at 25. They are then bent outward as at 26, 27 thus allowing room for swinging the hide as well as forming a support for the same. The arched arms 21 and 22 are fastened to bars 19 and 20 by any suitable means as by bolts 27 and 28 and in such a manner that there may be a slight pivoting movement of the arched arms'21 and 22 with respect to the bars 19 and 20. The table 23 may be connected to the bars 12 and 13 in any well known manner as by means of pins 29 and 30 working in slots in the side of the bars or supports 12 and 13. Said table 23 can be of any approved construction, suitable for the work. In the present instance I have shown said table as provided with an upstanding rib or header 31 and as having a suitable bolster consisting, for instance, of a layer of felt 32 carried beneath a leather covering 33.

Having now described a preferred type of machine involving my invention it will proceed to describe the operation of said machine. The construction shown as heretofore set forth is designed preferably for the setting out of the flanks of hides or skins and in the setting out operation it is extremely desirable that a construction be provided that will allow great freedom of movement of the table to and from the work roll and that will also permit the operator,

whenever necessary, to vary the pressure of the table with respect to the work roll when the same are in contact. In operation the flank 34 or 35 of a skin as 36 (Fig. 4) is hung in the space between the head of the table 23 and the work roll 5 while the remainder of the skin may be allowed to rest on the table 23. The operator then pushes said table forward in direct-ion of the arrow in Fig. 1. This will cause the helical blades 5 of the work roll 5 to come in cont-act with the flank portion of the skin and the continued forward movement of the table 23 relative to work roll 5 will cause said flank portion to be pressed against the bolster on the bottom of table 23 in which position the helical blades 5 on roll 5 will perform the setting out operation. From an inspection of Figs. 1 and 2 the reciprocating movement of table 23 with respect to work roll 5 will be readily apparent. Aside, however, from the forward and back movement of table 23 the operator may give the table an up and down movement with respect to roll 5. In other words, the pressure of table 23 upon roll 5 may be made light or heavy accordingly as the operator presses lightly or heavily upon said table when it is in contact with the work roll. This variation in pressure is permitted by making the arched arms 21 and 22 resilient to a greater or less extent so that they may be sprung more or less under pressure. The connections of the table 23 to bars 12 and 13 moreover and the connections of the arched resilient arms 21 and 22 with the bars 19 and 20 permit the pressure of the table 23 upon the work roll 5 to be readily varied by the operator. It will further be observed that when the table 23 is in operative position with respect to the roll 5 that said table 23 engages the top portion of said roll 5. This is considered the most important feature of my invention as by reason of this factthe operator is enabled to get the exact pressure between the roll and the table that may be required at any given time. Furthermore, by this construction the skins are prevented from being mutilated, which is often the case where the table is pressed directly against the roll.

Having thus described my invention what I desire to claim and to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:

1. In a machine of the character described, the combination with means for operating upon the hides and skins, of a reciprocable work-table having supports with yielding means which normally hold the table out of contact with the hide operating means for permitting the reciprocable work-table to be pressed against and across the hide operating means.

2. In a machine for treating hides and skins, the combination of a work roll, a reciprocable table, pivoted means for supporting the table of such length that the said table may be moved across the face of the work roll at a point above the horizontal axis of the said work roll.

3. In a machine for treating hides and skins, the combination of a work roll, a reciprocable table, pivoted supports for said table disposed on opposite sides of said work roll, the said pivoted supports being of such length that the said table may be moved across the face of the work roll.

4. In a machine for treating hides and skins, the combination of a work roll, a reciprocable table, pivoted supports for said table disposed in front and at the rear of said work roll and resilient connections from said table to the rear supports the said supports being of such length that the said table may be moved across the surface of the work roll.

In a machine for treating hides and skins, the combination of a work roll, a work table, pivoted supports for said table disposed on opposite sides of the work roll, the said supports being pivoted to the machine at a point below the axis of the work roll, and of such length that when the table is in operative position it will engage the work roll at a point above the axis thereof. 6. In a machine for treating hides and skins, the combination of a work roll, a reciprocating table, pivoted supports for said table disposed in front and at the rear of said work roll and resilient connections from said table pivoted to the rear supports, the said supports being of such length that the said table may be moved across the surface of the work.
