duction of a simple but effective powerdriven machine which will operatev on the hides or skins in substantially the same manner as when a manually actuated board ,is rubbed over the surface ofthe hide or skin.
The invention consists primarily of a support for the hide or, skin and having a dnum coacting therewith, which is adapted to reciprocate over said bed and oscillate during its reciprocation.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be understood readily byreference to the description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given. I
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred fornrthereof is illustrated in the drawings,this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described, except as required by the scope of the appended claims. 1 Of the drawings:

In the drawings, 10 is a framework having side bars 11 extending lengthwise thereof and two pairs of guide members 12 parallel to the bars 11, each pair of guid members being spaced apart.
Between the side guides 12 on opposite sides of framework 10 are disposed'bloclrs 13 adapted to be reciprocated between said .Whichfare secured to the disks 15. The
member 16 acts as a board such as is ordinarily used in machinesof'this class The periphery of this semi-cylindrical member 16 has glued or otherwise secured thereto a sheet 17 of material, the outer surface of which is adapted to grip a hide.
To the under side of both side bars 11 are secured the racks 18, the teeth of each of which mesh with a gear 19 secured to an outer end of the shaft 14.
At the rear end of the frame 10 are bearings 20 in which is revolubly mounted a drive shaft 21 having a driving pulley 22 secured thereto, and bywhich rotary move ment may be imparted to said shaft 21.
On the opposite ends of the shaft 21' are secured fly wheels 23, each fly wheel having pivotally connected thereto at 24 one end of a connecting rod 25, the opposite end of which has 'anopening 26 therein through which the outer ends of the shaftl l extend.
When the shaft 21 is rotated by means of a belt (not shown) on the driving pulley 22, the blocks13 will be reciprocated between. the side guides 12. During this reciprocation, owing to the meshing of the teeth of the gears 19 with the teeth of the racks 18, an oscillating movement will be imparted to the drum 15, 16.
On the lower face of the side bars 27 are secured bearings 28 in which is mounted an oscillating shaft 29 having the treadle arms 30 secured thereto, the front end of these arms 30 having a foot, board 31 mounted thereon. V T
To each treadle arm 30 is pivotally secured at 32, a T-shaped member 33, this member being articulated at 3%, 3% to one end of each of two levers 35 pivoted at 36, 36 to a side bar 27.
Theopposite ends of these levers 35 are pivotally connected at 37 to the adjustable members 38, the upper ends of which'are pivotally connected at 39 to the hide support table a0 adapted to be moved vertically between the plates 41 at the frontand rear ends of said hide support 4-0.2
This hide support 40 has atthe top there of a forward extension 42 by. means of which the hide may be positioned upon the support more readily.' Y
On the upper surface of this hide sup port lO is glued or otherwise secured a sheet of material 43, the upper surface of which is adapted to grip the hide placed thereon.
Normally the hide support 40 is in'the position indicated in Fig. 2 of thedrawings,
and when the drum 15, 16 is at or near the rear end of the frame 10, the operator places a folded hide upon the gripping sheet 43, the fold orbight of the hide being towardthe rear of the machine.
When the drum reaches its. forward position, the operator presses upon the foot board 31, moving the treadle arms 30 about the pivot 29, andthus forces the hide support with the. folded hide thereon upwardly against the, drum 15,16, in which position the hide support is retained until the drum in its reciprocation reaches its rearmost position. I
As the drum commences to oscillate durin the rear movement'of the drum, the hide-gripping sheet 17 thereon will grip upon the adjacent face of the hide and cause it to be moved toward the rear ofthe machine, the lower layer of the hide being retained in position on the sheet 4-3 by the friction thereof. As a consequence ofthis movement, the bight or fold. of the hide will be moved toward the rear of themachine until the drum reaches its extreme rearward position. i
The operator then removes his foot from the foot board 31 of treadle 30 and the hide support 40 will return, of its own weight,
to its normal position.
The operator then seizes the hide and turns it over upon the support 40 and repeats the operation so that the other half of the hide will be treated in the same manner.
By pinching the bight or fold of the hide in thismanner a grain will be formed all over the finished side of the hide.
If it is desired to produce a box effect upon the finish side of the hide, the hide will be folded again so that the fold will be at right angles to the fold previously described, and the two operations just mentioned will be repeated.
When a pebbled or fancy effect is preferred, the operations of the hide may be carried still further with the hide folded at an angle to the folds hereinbefore referred to.
It must be understood that when the hide is folded, the finish faces are always inside.
It is obvious therefore that by means of this machine. any design may be given to the finish faces of the hide that could be secured byhand operation and with less labor and in less time.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be understood readily without further description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a machine of the class described, a hide support; guides parallel to said support; a drum reciprocable on said guides; means for oscillating the drum during its reciprocation, and treadle mechanism for bodily lifting said hide support and retain ing it in parallelism with said guides.
2. In a machine of the class described, a hide support; guides parallel to said support; a drum reciprocable on said guides; a shaft to which said drum is secured; a gear secured to said shaft; means coacting with said gear for oscillating the drum during its reciprocation for bodily lifting said hide support and retaining it in parallelism with said guides.
3. In a machine of the class described, a hide support; a sheet of hide-gripping material on said support; guides parallel to said support; a drum reciprocable on said guides; means forpositively oscillating the drum during its reciprocation; adjustable members depending from opposite ends of said hide support; a treadle; and means interposed between said treadle and said adjustablemembers adapted to move said members an e ual distance during each movement of tie treadle.

In a machine of the class described, a hide support; guides parallel to said support; a'drum reciprocable on said guides; means for oscillating the drum during its reciprocation; members depending from said hide support; pivoted levers articulated at one end to the lower ends of said depending members; pivots for said levers intermediate their ends; a member connecting the opposite ends of said levers; and a treadle to which said connecting member is pivoted at a point removed from the pivot of said treadle.
5; In a machine of the class described, a hide support; a sheet of hide-gripping material on said support; guides parallel to said support; a drum re'ciprocable on said guides; means for oscillating the drum during its reciprocation; members depending from said hide support; levers mounted on pivots midway of their length with their outer ends articulated to said depending members; a member interposed between the adjacent ends of said levers and pivotally connected thereto; and a treadle pivotally connected at a point intermediate its length to said lever connecting member.
6. In a machine of the class described, a frame; a hide support adapted to be moved vertically; a treadle; connections between said support and treadle; guides parallel to said support; a drum reciprocable on said guides; means for oscillating the drum during its reciprocation; plates upon said frame against which the opposite ends of said hide support in its vertical movement are adapted to contact; and means for imparting ver tical movement to said hide support and retaining it in parallelism with sa d guides.
7. In a machine of the class described, a
frame; a hide support; a treadle; guides parallel with said support; a drum reciprocable on said guides; means for oscillating the drum during its reciprocation; vertical bearing plates on said frame coacting with the opposite ends of said hide support to prevent lateral movement thereof; adjustable members depending from said hide support; horizontally disposed levers pivoted midway of their length to said frame with their outer ends pivotally connected to the lower ends of said depending members; and a T-shaped member connecting the inner ends of said levers and pivoted to said treadle.
8. In a machine of the class described, a frame having side bars and guides; a hide support movable vertically in said frame; blocks adapted to be reciprocated with their upper and lower faces in contact with the opposed faces of said guides; means for reciprocating said blocks; an oscillating shaft mounted in bearings in said blocks; a drumsecured' to said shaft; gears secured to said shaft and movable therewith; and racks on said bars engaging the teeth of said gears thereby imparting oscillatory movement to the drum during its reciprocation.
9. In a machine of the class described, a frame having side bars and guides; a hide support movable vertically in said frame, the upper face of' said support having a sheet of gripping material secured thereto; blocks adapted to be reciprocated with their upper and lower faces in contact with the opposed faces of said guides; means for reciprocating said blocks; an oscillating shaft mounted in hearings in said blocks; a drum secured to said shaft; gears secured to said shaft and movable therewith; and racks on said bars engaging the teeth of said gears thereby imparting oscillatory movement to the drum during its reciprocation.
10. In a machine of the class described, a frame having side bars and guides; a hide support movable vertically in said frame; means for imparting verticalmovement to said support and retaining it horizontal during such movement; blocks adapted to be reciprocated with their upper and l.ower
frame having a pair of parallel guides at each side thereof; a block adapted to be reciprocated between each pair of guides; crank mechanism for reciprocating said blocks; an oscillating shaftmounted in bearings in said blocks; a drum securedto said shaft and movable therewith; gears secured to the outer ends of said shafts; fixed racks meshing with said gears to impart oscillatory movement to said shaft and drum during the reciprocation; and abide support horizontally disposed beneath said drum and having on its upper face a sheet of material adapted to grip the hide while being operated upon.
12. In a machine of the class described, a frame having parallel guides at each side thereof; a block adapted to be reciprocated between each pair of guides; an oscillating shaft mounted in bearings in said blocks; a drum secured and movable with said shaft gears secured to the outer ends of said shaft; fixed racks meshing with the teeth of said gears to impart an oscillatory movement to saiddrum during the reciprocation of said blocks; .a hidesupport; a hide-gripping material secured to the upper face thereof; and means for raising said hide support a predetermined distance.
