Description

G. P. BNGELHARD 8; M. U. REI'NIG. SHARPENING DEVICE.
W11 ESE APPLICATION FILED FEB. 1,1909.
Patented Feb. 1, 1910.
GEORGE P. ENGELHARD AND MICHAEL G. BEINIG', OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHARPENING DEVICE.
aaaisi.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE P. ENGEL- HARD and MICHAEL G. REINIG, citizens of the United States, and residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a complete specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sharpening devices and more particularly to a chalk sharpening device for tailors use.
Heretofore devices of this character have been so constructed that if the chalk breaks while being sharpened the hand is apt to be forced against the knives or cutters and seriously injured. Furthermore in the devices as heretofore constructed the sharpening mechanism has been rigidly bolted or otherwise secured to its support so that its removal is rendered difiicult.
The object of this invention is to provide a chalk sharpener in which the cutting mechanism is so protected that the danger of injury thereon while in operation is entirely obviated.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device in which the sharpening mechanism may be quickly removed from its support when desired but which is rigidly held from turning therein.
The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described in the specification and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is aperspective view of the device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the recep" tacle with the sharpening mechanism removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sharpening mechanism. Fig. a is a side elevation of one of the knives. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the pin holder.
As shown in said drawings: A indicates a receptacle of any desired material and construction, though which is preferably rectangular in shape and which is provided with a removable cover at having a longitudinal slot a therein.
As shown the cover is secured on the receptacle by means of screws a though it may be removably secured thereon 1n any other desired manner, and the upper surface of the cover, adjacent the slot, is beveled down toward the slot, as at a to reduce the thickness at that point and to cause any particles of chalk that may fall thereon to be deposited in the receptacle.
The end walls a of the receptacle are provided on their inner faces with upwardly and inwardly opening, downwardly tapering seats a, one situated on each side of the slot a in the cover, and in which the cutting mechanism, indicated as a whole by B is adapted to be supported. Said cutting mechanism comprises a plurality of blades 1), each having a V shaped notch in its upper edge providing double cutting edges b,and between the ends of said blades on each side of the notches are separators of leather or other desired material. The separators be tween two adjacent blades are spaced a distance apart so as to provide a central opening through which the particles of chalk may fall to the bottom of the receptacle. Said blades and separators are secured together by means of rods Z2 which pass through the same, one on each side of the notches, and the ends thereof are screw threaded to receive the nuts Z9 which hold the blades and separators securely in place. Said rods are of such length that the projecting ends thereof may seat in the seats a when the cutting mechanism is in place in the receptacle.
If preferred, and as shown in Fig. 1, a pin holder C may be attached to the receptacle to provide a combined pin holder and chalk sharpener. Said pin holder comprises a tray 0 having on the rear thereof a hopper c in the top of which is provided a slot 0 in which the pins are placed. Said hopper is relatively long and narrow so that it will always direct the pins into the tray in parallel relation to each other. The back 0 of said hopper is provided with a slot 0 as shown in Fig. 5, adapted to be hooked on to a pin, not shown, projecting from the end of the receptacle A.
In operation the sharpening mechanism is placed in the receptacle with the ends of the rods b seated in the seats The cover a is then secured in place with its slot above and in alinement with the row of notches in the blades 6. The chalk D is then inserted through the slot, which also acts as a guide to hold the chalk in true vertical po sition, and the lower edge thereof is drawn along the notches in the usual manner. Should the chalk break or the hand he released therefrom by accident the hand will contact with the smooth surface of the cover and be prevented from, striking the blades and being injured.
Obviously a chalk sharpener embodying our invention is adapted to afiord protection to the hand of the operator and the cutting mechanism may be quickly removed and replaced when desired. Obviously also many details of form and construction may be Varied without departing from the principles of our invention.
\Ve claim as our invention.
1. In a device of the class described the combination with a receptacle of a cover therefor provided with a longitudinal slot, upwardly and inwardly opening seats in said receptacle, two situated at each side of said slot, parallel rods adapted to be supported in said seats, cutting mechaninm removably secured on said rods and means for tightening said cutting mechanism on the rods.
2. The combination with a receptacle of a cover therefor having a longitudinal slot therein, a pair of seats in each end of said receptacle, said seats being disposed beneath and laterally of the ends of the slot, rods seated at their ends in said seats, blades having V shaped notches in their tops providing cutting edges and each provided with a pair of apertures to receive said rods, separators on each rod between said blades and providing openings between corresponding laterally disposed separators, and nuts on each end of said rods within the receptacle adapted to be set up against said blades and separators and hold them from movement on the rods.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
