Description

inited gaat@ @met @Milice W. H. YOUNG AND CHARLES J. YOUNG, OFCAMBRIDGE, MASSA- i CHUSETTS.
Lette/rs Patent No. 94,807, dated September 14,18d9.
The Schedule referred to in these litem-.ers Patent and making part o! the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that we, W. H. YOUNG and @nannies J. YOUNG, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Printers Guide or Copy-Holder; and we here by declare that the following is a full and exact description of the invention, and reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon, making a part of the specification, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device.
Figure 2 is a section ofthe roller and guide.
The letter a represents the roll;
b, the rubber cylinder, upon the roll (L c, a metallic strip or bar; Y
al, the' rubber upon the end of the roll, to turn the -Sime e e, sides of the frame, and y ff, their forks; and
g g, the cross-bars. l
The'device is for the convenience of printers or typesetters in setting-type.
Printers, usually have a rule or bar attached by a string to a lead or other weight, hanging back of thecase, and as fast' as a liuc of the copy is set in type, the rule is brought down one line, or the piinter puts the copy to be printed upon the case without rule or. weight.
Thisl device will be found much more convenient, and is thus described.
In fig. '1,1 drawings, a, represents a roll, made of metal or any suitable material. It passes through the upper end of the sides of the frame e e, and is there secured.
Upon one end of the roll is a rubber linger-cylinder, to facilitate turning.
Upon the roll, between the sides of the frame, is a rubber cylinder. Over and near thiscyiinder is placed a metallic or other suitable spring-bar, c, which is fastened in the sides of the frame, as seen in fig. 2.
The bar is concave inform, on its inner surface, so
as to conform to the rubber cylinder.
Upon the lower ends of thesides of the flame are forks f f. These are made 4so as to fasten upon the type-case, and can be readily removed, or moved forcopy forward, and the spring-bar keeps the copy in' place, and also will indicate when each line of the copy is in type.
The device will be found very convenient, not only for type-setters, but for cepyists, in holding papers to be copied, in which ease the forks may he adjusted to a stand.
The device is novel in its several parts, as applied i to the purpose declared, and will be found ofp-great prac-` tical use. V
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as applied to a printers guide or copy-holder, is
The combination and arrangementof the roll a,
with its gabber cylinder b, and bar c, the sides e, bars g, and forks j, substantially as herein described.
