or more of my supports 5, which in the pre Be it known that I, JENNINGS Soo'rr Mo- 1 ferred construction consist of a substantially Gone, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dobbs Ferry, in the county of li estchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Leaves of Loose Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of the same.

This invention relates to loose leaf binders and more particularly to supports .for the leaves of a loose leaf binder, which supports may be incorporated in the binder forming a part of the extensible pillars or posts. By incorporating one, or a plurality, of my supports in the posts or pillars of the binder, I. support the different leaves or papers at points intermediate of the cover and. back, and permit the ready insertion of new mat ter or the withdrawal of old matter from the binder by simply disconnecting two sections of the pillar or post at the desired point. The removed pages of the binder are temporarily supported by my supports without the necessity of threading them off and on the posts or pillars of the binder. In the preferred construction of my invention, a portion of my support is arranged as a flexible member and bends or yields readily in one direction.

In the accompanying drawing showing illustrative embodiments of this invention and in which the same reference numerals refer to similar parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan view if a loose leaf binder equipped with my invention, a por tion of the figure being broken away to better illustrate the support. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal. vertical section on the line 2-2 loole ing in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 is a side elevation on a reduced scale of one of my supports. Fig. 4: is a plan view of the head of my support taken on the line 4% of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is a transverse horizontal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a side elevation similar to Fig. 3, showing a modified form of support.

In the illustrative embodiments of this invention shown in the drawing 1 is a loose leaf binder having a cover 2, a back 3 and an extensible pillar or post 4. On this pillar or post I mount, in any suitable manner, one

rigid body portion 6 having a rearwardly extending handle 7, and a forwardly extending blade 8. These members may be given various shapes, but I preferably, though not necessarily, form them in the shape of a spear-head or pear. As shown in Fig. 1 the point 9 of the blade 8 extends approXimately to the end of the contained

10, 10, though the end 9 may extend only half the length of the sheet or at any shorter distance that may be desired. I preferably however, make the supports as shown so as to form the maximum supporting surface for those leaves 1O, 10 which are innnediately above one of the supports 5.

In the preferred construction the blade 8 is secured in any suitable manner to the body portion 6, either being formed integral with it as shown in Fig. 6, or pivoted to it as shown in Fig. 1 wherein the body portion 6 is shown provided with upwardly bent por tions 11 and the blade 8 with corresponding downwardly bent portions to cooperate with the pivot pin 12. 10, 10 when the post 4: is disconnected for the insertion of new or the removal of old matter, I provide any suitable stop mechanism which will permit the blade 8 to swing upon the pivot pin 12 in one direction, but which will limit its movement in the opposite direction. Various forms of such stop devices may be used, but for purposes ofillustration I have shown a plate 13 secured at one end to the rigid body portion 6 by any suitable means such as by rivets 14:, 14;, the other end 15 of the plate 13 extending out beyond the pivot pin 12. By this construction the blade 8 is permitted to swing upwardly and to conform generally to the movement of the leaves in opening and manipulating the binder, but is prevented from moving downwardly by the end 15 of the stop or plate 13. It is to be understood that any other stop mechanism may be used without departing from my invention.

The rigid body portion 6 is provided with a head 16 and stem 17 to cooperate with another similar head or stem of a cooperating support or with a cooperating unit 18 of the post 4. It is immaterial how the different units 18 are connected to the head 16 and stem 17, or the means employed to connect two of the supports 5 together. 20, 20 cooperating with the ends of the pin 21 carried by the stem 17 The parts are so arranged that by inserting the stem 17 with its pin 21 into the seat 19 the ends of the pins 21 will cooperate with the

20, 20 until the end of the stem 17 reaches the limit of its movement in the seat 19, when the two members may be given a partial rotation, the ends of the pins 21 being thereby brought into a groove 22 locking the parts together.

Various other means of connecting and disconnecting the supports and units or sections to the post 4: may be employed, the one shown being merely for purpose of illustration.

In some cases it may be advantageous to have the support formed of one piece, the blade 8 being formed integral with the rigid body portion 6. Such a construction is shown in Fig. 6 where the blade 23 is shown formed integral with the body portion 24:. This blade 23 may under some circumstances be formed of stiff rigid material preventing it being bent to any appreciable extent, while for other uses it may be formed of spring metal, or other similar substance, which will permit it bending more or less with the leaves of the binder.

The handle 7 of the different supports may be given various contours and may be used also as an index either with or without the usual front index not shown. Numerals or letters may be placed upon them as shown in Fig. 1, where a letter A is used which may correspond with a similar letter upon the front index of the binder (if one be used). These handles 7 are preferably comparatively short so as to be unobtrusive and not interfere with the filing away of the binder.

While I have illustrated in the drawing a loose leaf binder with a single pillar or post it is to be understood that my invention is not to be limited to such binders.

Having thus described this invention in connection with the several illustrative embodiments thereof to the details of which I do not desire to be limited, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.

I claim- 1. A support to support the leaves in a loose leaf binder having a body portion, interlocking members carried by the body portion adapted to interlock with other complementary members to form a pillar for the loose leaf binder, and a member pivotally secured to the body portion, the body portion and the pivoted member being formed substantially in the shape of a pear or spearhead.

2. A support to support the leaves in a loose leaf binder having a body portion, interlocking members carried by the body portion adapted to interlock with other complementary members to form a pillar for the loose leaf binder, a member pivotally secured to the body portion, a handle on the body portion and a stop to limit the movement of the pivoted member carried by the body portion.

3. A support for a loose leaf binder comprising a body portion having interlocking members to cooperate with other complementary interlocking members to form a pillar or post, a handle extending to the rear of the body portion, a pivoted blade mounted on the front of the body portion, and a plate secured to the body portion and having its free end extending into the path of the pivoted blade to limit its movement in one direetion.
