SCREEN FOR CAR-OPENINGS.

This invention relates to improvements in screens for ear openings and has among its salient objects to provide an extremely simple and cheaply constructed device the frame vork of which can be stamped from a sinpiece of metal; to provide novel clamping devices which not only secure the wire mesh of the screen proper in position but also serve at the same time to stretch the mesh tightly across the frame; to provide a construction whereby the frame of the screen will fit closely within the car opening despite any slight inequalities in manufacture and in general to provide an improved construction of the character referred to.
The invention consists in the matters here inafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of the upper end of a car showing my improved screen secured across the usual ventilating opening in the hood. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively fragmentary outside and inside elevations of the screen frame. Fig. t is a perspective view of one of the clamping strips. Fig. is a sectional detail view showing the manner of clamping the wire mesh or fabric to the frame.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the car body having the usual hood equipped with the window 3 for ventilation. Upon the outer side of the hood are secured blocks 4., 4 having extensions L, i which together form the casing 5 to which the screen is fastened.
Describing this screen, 6 designates as a whole the frame work thereof, which is, or may be stamped from a single piece ofmetal, and is struck up near its inner edges to form clamping grooves 7, 7 as seen more clearly in'Fig. 5. There is, of course, one of these grooves at either side of the frame, and it is to be noted that they are each slightly inset from the inner edges of the latter in order to form flanges or straight edges 8, 8

across which the wire mesh or foraminous screen 9 may be stretched.
To fasten this wire screen to the frame 6, and at the same time stretch the former tightly across the open face of the latter, I provide novel clamping strips .10, 10. These clamping strips each consist of a single. piece of flat metal bent back upon itself to form sides ill, 12, the inner side 12 being curved or bent outwardly to conform to the groove 7. The end portions 13 of the inner side 12 extend substantially parallel with the opposite side 11. as shown. These strips 10 are each clamped in the respective grooves 7 by means of a 1i luralityof tln'ough-bolts 14;, the threaded ends of which extend through the outer faces 11 of the strips, and are provided with nuts 15 whereby the strips may be drawn down into the grooves and there locked.
To secure the wire screen 9 to the frame, it is first stretched across the open face of the latter, the ends of the wire then bent around the curved faces 12 of the strips and finally turned back between the open edges of the latter as shown in Fig. 5. These strips are then seated in their respective grooves 7 and the bolts 14; inserted. As the nuts 15 are tightenend the clamping strips will of course be drawn downwardly into the grooves and the wire screen 9 fastened securely to the frame. At the same time the screen 9 will be drawn tightly over the inner edges 8 of the frame in an obvious manner.
The screen when thus assembled may be secured in the casing formed by the blocks 4;, by means of suitable screws 16 extending through the outer edges of the f nine (5 and into the casing as shown. In order that the frame of the screen may tit closely within this casing 5 the upper and vertical edges of the former are bent inwardly at right angles to form flanges 17, while the bottom edge of the frame is bent outwardly to form a hook shaped flange member 18. Vithin this hook shaped flange is seated a rubber washer 19 the lower edge of which projects below the flange and serves to secure a close fit between the frame of the screen and the casing despite any inequalities in manufacture.
lVhile I have herein shown a preferred embodiment of my invention it is apparent that it may be more or less varied in details of construction without in any manner departing from the spirit thereof.
1 claim as my invention:
1. In a screen, the combination with a frame member provided along each side with a clamping groove, clamping strips seated in the respective grooves, each of said strips being bent back upon itself and open at one side, a foraminous screen having its edges extending across the inner face of the clamping strips and turned back between the sides of the latter, and means for clamp ing the strips Within the groove whereby the screen is securely fastened to the frame.
2. In a screen, the combination with a frame member having a clamping groove at each side thereof, a clamping strip seated in each of said grooves, each of said strips being bent back upon itself and open at its outer edge, a screen stretched across the open face of said frame and having its edges extending across the inner sides of said clamping strips and then turned back between the sides of the latter, and means for clamping said strips Within the groove to fasten the screen in position.
3. In a screen, the combination with a frame member having a curved groove in each side thereof, clamping strips seated in the respective grooves, each of said strips being bent back upon itself and having its inner faces curved to conform to the curvature of the groove, a screen extending across the open face of said frame and into said grooves, the ends of the screen being inserted between the outer edges of clamping strips, and means for locking said clamping strips within the grooves to clamp the screen to the frame.
4. In a screen, the combination with a frame member having a groove along the side thereof, a clamping strip turned back upon itself and seated within said groove, a screen extending across the open face of said frame and into said groove, one end of said screen being turned back between the outer edges of said clamping strip, and means for clamping the strip within the groove.
