Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN Hansen, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Hinge; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates particularly to adj ustable hinges for the hanging of windowscreens, storm windows, and the like; and has for its object the provision of a simple, efficient and improved hinge of this class, the two hinge plates of which are relatively adjustable to enable the outer faces of the screen or other frame and of the associated casing to lie in separated parallel planes, the separation of which planes may vary for different casings or thickness of frames.

A further object of my invention is the provision of a hinge of this type, which is adapted to be used to hang a screen or window frame to swing either vertically or horizontally as may be desired.

The operation, construction and arrangement of the parts of the invention are fully described in the following specification, and a preferred embodiment of the same is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window-casing with a window-screen suspended at top from a pair of hinges embodying my invention. Fig. is a similar view of the same with the screen hung at the side of the casing. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the hinge as used in Fig. l with the associated parts in section. and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the hinge as used in Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a window or door casing, and 2 a screen or other frame which is mounted therein.

The casing member of the hinge comprises the relatively fixed part or plate 3, which is adapted to be screwed or otherwise secured to the :asing and has a flange or wing 4: projecting outwardly therefrom at right-angles to the casing, and the part 5, which is ad justably carried by the flange 4. The part 5 is formed at one end with a hook (i and at its other end with an eye 7 and has a flange, or wing 8 projecting from one side at rightjustably secured to the ,side of the flange l, with its base portion in proper spaced relation to the casing, by a screw or bolt't), which passes through an elongated outwardly extending slot 10 in the flange 8 and is tapped into or otherwise suitablyattached to the flange -l-, thus enabling the part 5 to be adjustedtoward or away from the casing. A flange 11 projects from one side edge of the flange 8 and coacts with the associatededge of the flange i' to prevent a relative turning of such flange in parallel planes.

12 is a hinge plate adapted to be secured, by means of screws, or in any other suitable manner, to the outer face of the screen frame, as shown. Projecting from one edge of the plate 12 outwardly from the face of the screcnframe is a flange 13, which is formed at its outer end with a laterally extending pivot or pintle 1st. This pivot or pintle is shown in the presentcase as being formed by laterally extending the outer end of the flange 13 in one direction and rolling the same in pivot form. hen the two hinge members are assembled the pivots 1d are adapted to journal in either the hook 6 or eye 7 of the part 5, as may be desired.

The manner of use of my improved hinge is as follows :Sh0uld it be desired to suspend the window-screen or the like from the top of the casing, the plates 3 are secured in proper position to the outer side of the casing at the top thereof, and the plates 12 are secured to the outer face of the screen frame adjacent the upper end thereof in position for the pivot lit: to fit into the hook 6 atthe lower end of the part 5. The part 5 is now adjusted on the flange 4 by loosening the set-screw or bolt 9 and moving the part 5 outwardly or inwardly relative to the casing as the depth of setting the screen frame in the casing may require, as is apparent. When the hinge is disposed at the top of the screen frame the pivot lat thereof preferably engages with the hook 6 of the part 5 to facilitate an engaging or disen gaging of the hinge members. When the hinges are placed at one side of the casing to permit the screen to swing horizontally the securing and adjusting of the parts is the same as above described except that the part 58 is secured to the part 34 with the eye 7 disposed at the inner end of the former in position to receive the pivot 14. of the male member of the hinge.

The flange or wing 8 is ad- It is apparent that I have provided a hinge of the class described which is simple and inexpensive of construction and manufacture and which is capable of being easily and quickly secured to a screen and casing and adjusted to permit the outer face of the screen to lie either in the same plane with the face of the casing or in planes parallel. therewith but spaced therefrom.

I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-

1. In a hinge, a pair of hinge-plates, a part adjust-ably attached to one plate and having a pivot socket therein, and a pivot carried by the other plate and adapted to journal in such socket.

2. In a hinge, a pair of plates, each of which vhas a flange projecting outwardly therefrom, a pivot carried by one of such flanges, and a female pivot member adjustably carried by the other of such flanges, substantially as described.

3. In a hinge, a pair of plates, each having a flange projecting outwardly therefrom, a part having a slotted flange projecting therefrom and adjustably secured to the flange of one of such plates, said part also having a pivot socket, and a pivot project ing from the otherof said flanges and adapted to removably fit into said socket.

i. A hinge comprising a casing plate having a flange projecting outwardly therefrom at right angles thereto, a plate having one end fashioned to form a hook and its other end fashioned to form an eye, said latter plate also having a flange extending from one side edge thereof and slotted, means passing through such slot and. coacting with the flange of the casing-plate to hold the other plate in adjusted position thereto, a sash-plate having a flange projecting therefrom, and a pintle carried by such latter flange and adapted to fit into either said hook or eye, substantially as described.
