"UN STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. GADSDEN, OF MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.
SIPHON.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. G-ADSDEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Montgomery, county of Montgomery and State of Alabama, have invented certain Improvements in Siphons, of which the following is a specification. The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective siphon for removing liquid from barrels or other receptacles in which it may be contained. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a barrel with my improved siphon applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of those portions of the siphon to which my invention relates, and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but illustrating a different disposition of the parts.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, 1 represents a barrel or other receptacle for liquid, and 2 a tube of rubber or other flexible material having, at one end, a foot piece 3 through which the liquid can enter that end of the tube which is inserted within the barrel, the outer depending portion of the tube having mounted thereupon a hollow elastic bulb t, whose end portions fit so snugly to the tube as to form practically air-tight oints therewith.
In one side of the tube 2 is an opening 5 and when the siphon is first applied to the barrel this opening occupies a position in the chamber within the elastic bulb 4t, as
shown in Fig. 2. The bulb is then compressed so as to force the air therefrom through the opening 5-and thence-thrpugh the tube 2, and that portion of said tube below the bulb is then compressed by the fingers or byany suitable mechanical device so as to prevent any inflow of air through this portion of the tube, whereupon, when the bulb is permitted to expand, air will be drawn from that portion of the tube above the bulb and the liquid will be caused to rise in the tube. If the bulb 4 is of such dimensions that this single expansion of the same will fill the tube with liquid from the foot 3 to the bulb 4 the siphon action will be Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 485,457.
, If it is desired to prevent the access of the liquid to the chamber within the bulb, said bulb may, after the establishment of siphon action, be shifted on the'tubeso as to close the opening 5, as shown in Fig. 3.
My invention provides an extremely ef' fective, simple and cheap form of siphon, being composed of the minimum number of parts compatible with the proper operation of the device.
I claim:
1. A siphon comprising a hollow, elastic bulb, and a tube passing through said bulb and having an opening therein within the limits of the chamber within the bulb, said bulb ,being adjustable upon the tube.
2. A siphon comprising a hollow, elastic bulb, and a tube passing through said bulb and having an opening therein within the limits of the chamber within the bulb, the ends of the bulb contacting with the tube so as to maintain the bulb in position upon the latter by adjustable and frictional hold thereon and form substantially air tight joints.
3. A siphon comprising a hollow, elastic bulb, and a tube passing through said bulb and having an opening in one side, said bulb having end portions frictionally mounted uponthe tube and adjustable thereon so as to bring'the Opening into the chamber within the bulb or into an end portion of the bulb whereby it may be closed.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
