Be it known that I, FERDINAND H. KonR- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination- Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to combination tools and is designed to provide a fixed jaw having a sliding jaw thereon so that the device is available as a wrench, and it has a handle that is adapted to swing and be secured at different angles so that the wrench can be made into a vise, or the end of the handle can be inserted in one end of an arm so that the tool is adapted for use as a brace and bit, the wrench portion holding the bit. The end of the handle, when not used in a brace and bit, is formed to provide a screwdriver.
The invention is further designed to provide a handle and a wrench portion that are detachable from each other so that they can be easily packed and put into a small space.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the device used as a wrench, showing the handle in different positions in dotted outline. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device formed for use as a brace and bit. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the wrench. Fig. 1 is a section of the bottom portion of the wrench shank, and Fig. 5 is a section of the handle detached therefrom. Fig. 6 is a section on line 6, 6, in Fig. 3.
The device comprises a shank 10 forming, with its head, a T-shaped portion on one end of which is the fixed jaw 11, being preferably provided with a curved recess, and on the opposite end is a jaw 12. The shank 10 is slotted as at 13 and has, rotatably arranged in said slot, a screw 1% which is rotated by means of the collar 15 which is secured to the screw and is provided with a knurled surface so as to give a better grip. The collar 15 rotates in a slot 16 of the block 17, and the shank has the end portions 18 of its two arms, which arms are formed by reason of the shank being slotted, placed in l l 1 l the block 17 as shown more particularly in Fig. 4. The block 17 has the parallel cheekpieces 19, across which is placed a pin 20. These cheek-pieces 19 are parallel and form a space between them, and the cheek-pieces are provided with recesses 21, the recess in each cheek-piece being in line, the function of these recesses being described hereinafter. A nut portion 22, of the sliding jaw 23, is screw-threaded on its interior to receive the screw 14, one end of the sliding jaw 23 having teeth 2% to cooperate with the curved recess in the jaw 11 to form a pipewrench. The other end 25 of the sliding jaw is opposed to the jaw 12 of the shank 10, and has a flat face 26 to cooperate with a similar flat face, on the aw 12, so that the two jaws can be used as a monkey-wrench. The handle, which is detachably secured to the body portion of the wrench, consists of a stem 27 which has the screw-threads 3O arranged near its outer end, the stem having a hook 28 on its end, which hook forms a recess 29 which receives the pin 20. The hook 28 is hooked over the pin 20, when the parts are assembled, and the tube 30 of the handle, which has a screw-threaded portion in engagement with the screw-threaded por tion of the stem, is turned so as to be screwed up on the stem, this turning being accomplished by flange 31.
The inner end of the tube 30 engages a sleeve 32 and forces it in engagement with the cheek-pieces 19, the sleeve 32 having oppositely arranged lugs 33 to fit into the recesses 21, and when with the handle and the body portion in line, as in Fig. 1, a solid monkey-wrench is the result, the parts being placed together in tight relation and the assembling thereof being easy. A thimble 3 1 is placed on the tube 30 and adjacent to the sleeve 32, and a rotatable grip 35, preferably made of wood, is placed around the tube so as to be rotated thereon. The end of the stem 27 is formed into a rectangular shape, preferablv square as at 36, and has the narrowed portion 37 to form a screw-driver.
When the handle is arranged straight or in line with the fixed shank 10, the tool can be used as a screw-driver, as a monkey-wrench, and also as a pipe-wrench, and the handle can then be swung to one side or the other and secured and the device can still be used as a wrench in places that are inaccessible to means of the knurled the device is arrangedastraight handle, or it can also be used as a vise in case the handle is thrown downward as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 1. W hen the handle is thrown in the direction shown in Fig. 2, an arm 37 is placed with its socket 38 over the rectangular portion 36 oi. the stem 27, the perforation 39 in the socket and the stem being of a rectangular or similar shape so that one cannot rotate on the other. The arm 3 is bent on its outer end and has arranged thereon a fiat rotatable disk 40, and this rotatable disk or plate 40, coupled with the rotatable grip portion 35 of the handle, furnishes an easy means for turning the tool and using it as a brace and bit. I provide the opposed faces 26 of the wrench portion with recesses 4-1 so that the two recesses receive the corners of the end of the bit 42 and thus form a holder for the bit or drill.
The device is easily separated as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 by turning down the tube 30 by means of its flange 31, so as to permit the sleeve 32 and its lugs 33 to be drawn away from the cheek-pieces of the block 17 sutficiently to enable movement enough to allow the hook 28 to be disengaged from the pin 20.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A tool comprising a body portion having a shank, a fixed jaw on the shank, a sliding jaw on the shank, means for regulating the sliding jaw, a block on the end of the shank having cheek-pieces forming a space between them, a pin connecting the cheek-pieces, a handle having a hook to pass between the cheek-pieces and receive the pin, and means on the handle for engaging the edges of the cheek-pieces to adjust the handle in a ditferent position when swung either in line with the shank or to either side thereof.

A tool comprising a body portion having a shank, a fixed jaw on the shank, a sliding jaw on the shank, means for regulating the sliding jaw, a block on the end of the shank having cheek-pieces forming a space between them, a pin connecting the cheekpieces, a handle having a hook to pass be tween the cheek-pieces and receive the pin, and means on the handle for engaging the edges of the cheek-pieces to adjust the handle sliding in a dilierent position when swung, the engaging means when relaxed permitting the hook to be unhooked from the pin.
3. A tool comprising a body portion having a shank, a fixed jaw on the shank, a
jaw on the shank, means for regulating the sliding jaw, a block on the end of the shank having cheek-pieces forming a space between them, a pin connecting the cheek-pieces, a handle having a hook to pass between the cheek-pieces and receive the pin, means on the handle for engaging the edges of the cheek-pieces to adjust the handle in a different position when swung, the engaging means when relaxed permitting the hook to be unhooked from the pin, an arm having one end bent, and a rotatable disk on the bent end of the arm, the other end of the arm having a socket to receive the outer end of the handle.

A tool comprising a shank, a fixed jaw on the shank, a sliding jaw on the shank, means for regulating the sliding jaw, a block in extension of the end of the shank, cheekpieces 011 the block, a pin connecting the cheek-pieces, the cheek-pieces having recesses 111 their edges, a handle comprising a stem having a hook on one end to enter between the cheek-pieces and receive the pin, a screw-thread on the stem, the stem being formed on its outer end into a rectangular portion, a tubular portion screwing on the stem, a grip rotatably arranged on the tubular portion, a sleeve on the end of the tubular portion, lugs on the sleeve to enter the recesses in the cheek-pieces, the lugs when released from the recesses permitting the hook to be unhooked from the pin, an arm bent on one end and provided with a rotatable disk, and a socket perforated to receive the rectangular portion of the shank in the handle.

A tool comprising a shank having a slot therein and having a fixed jaw on its end, a sliding jaw on the shank having a nut portion in the slotof the shank, a screw arranged in the slot portion and passing through the nut in the sliding jaw, a block in extension of the end of the shank, the block having a recess therein, a thimble in the recess and secured to the screw for its operation, parallel cheek-pieces on the block, the cheek-pieces having recesses in their edges, a pin connecting the cheek-pieces, a handle formed with a stem having a hook on one end to engage the pin, the stem having a screw-threaded portion, a tubular portion adapted to screw on the stem, a grip rotatably arranged on the tubular portion, a sleeve on the end of the tubular portion and rotatably arranged thereon and also adapted to rotate on the stem, and lugs on the sleeve to enter the recesses in the cheekpieces, the lugs when released from the recesses permitting the hook to be unhooked from the pin.

A tool comprising a shank having a slot therein and having a fixed j aw 011 its end, a sliding aw on the shank having a nut portion in the slotof the shank, a screw are ranged in the slot portion and passing through the nut in the sliding jaw, a block on the end of the shank, the block having a recess therein, a thimble in the recess and secured to the screw for its operation, parallel cheek-pieces on the block, the cheekpieces having recesses in their edges, a pin connecting the cheek-pieces, a handle formed with a stem having a hook on one end to engage the pin, the stem having a screwthreaded portion, a tubular port-ion adapted to screw on the stem, a grip rotatably arranged on the tubular portion, a sleeve on the end of the tubular portion and rotatably arranged thereon and also adapted to rotate on the stem, lugs on the sleeve to enter the recesses in the cheek-pieces, the lugs when released from the recesses permitting the hook to be unhooked from the pin, an arm having one end bent, a rotatable disk secured to the bent end of the arm, and a socket on the other end of the arm having means for engaging the end of the stem opposed to its hook, the opposed faces of the jaws having recesses to receive a bit.
