Description
L. AJCRO'MBIE WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 4 1,327,524, Patented Jan. 6, 1920.
WITNESSES 4 TTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS A. CROMBIEQOF HICKSVILLE, NEW YORK.
WRENCH.
Application filed May 24, 1919.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. (honour, a citizen of the United States, and a res1dent of l-licksville, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved rench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and pertain more particularly to wrenches known broadly as the adjustable jaw type.
It is the primary object of the invention to provide a. wrench in which adjustments of the jaws may be made by manipulations thereof with one hand only, thus making the device especially adapted for use by persons who have temporarily or permanently lost the use of one hand.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench in which minute adjustments within the extreme limits may be obtained.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation, of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, and showing the jaws in their closed position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the jaws in their open position;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. a is a transverse sectional view on the line 4ll of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the wrench comprises two jaws 5 and 6, each of which terminates in a straight portion 7 and 8, respectively. Projecting from the straight portions 7 and 8, are offset portions 9 and 10, respectively. These offset portions 9 and 10 are substantially semicircular in cross sectional form and each of said portions is provided on its curved surface with screw-threads 11.
Projecting from each of the ofi'set portions 9 and 10, and arranged in parallelism to each other, are two substantially semi-circular members 12 and 13, said semi-circular members 12 and 13 havlng their flat faces in engagement with each other, as more clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. These members 12 and 13 are preferably formed of drop forgings, and the member 12 is provided with an integral projection or lug 14, which is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 6, 1920.
Serial No. 299,618.
adapted to be received within a recess 15 in the member 13 to form the means by which these members 12 and 13 may be pivotally secured together. On the free end of the member 12, is formed a screw-driver 16, the free end of the member 13 being bifurcated as at 17, to provide a tack puller.
Surrounding the members 12 and 13, when the two are placed together, as shown, is a sleeve 18, the rear end of which is provided with an opening 19 equal in diamei er to the diameter of the members 12 and 13 when placed together. This sleeve 18 gradually increases in diameter, its greatest diameter being at the point 20. Projecting forwardly from the point 20, the sleeve tapers and its forward end is provided with a screw threaded 0pening21, of a diameter equal to the diameter of the members 12 and 13.
The operation of the device is as follows: The operator grasps the sleeve 18 and if the same be rotated to the right, it will be seen that the jaws 5 and 6 will be spread as shown in Fig. 2. The jaws now being engaged with the article operated upon, if the sleeve' be turned to the left, the jaws will be caused to grip the same for the purpose desired. By this arrangement, it will be seen that it is only necessary to employ one hand in the operation of a wrench of this character since the rotation of the sleeve is the only movement necessary for expanding and closing the jaws 5 and 6. Further, if the sleeve 18 be removed the two members 12 and 13 may be separated with respect to each other and their individual tools 16 and 17, respectively, may be used. 1
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A wrench comprising handle members having eXteriorly-threaded off-set portions presenting crossed jaws on one of their ends, and means engaging and moving in contact with said exterlorlythreaded off-set nortions for moving the jaws relatively to each other.
2. A wrench comprising handle members having eXteri orly-threaded off-set portions presenting crossed jaws arranged for lateral movement relative to each other, and an interiorly-threaded sleeve member inclosing said handle members and engaging said eX- teriorly-threaded off-set portions for moving said jaws.
