CHRISTIAN BATES, OF CONESTOGA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Partant No. 94,697, daterl'iSeptmnbcr 14, 1869.
IMPROVED LEATHER-HOLDER.
The Schedule referre. to in these Letters Patent and making part of the slame.
To all whom 'it may noncorn:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN BATES, of Conest-oga, in the county ot' Lancaster', and State of Ienn- Sylvania, have invented a new and improved Adjustable Iuather-Holder for Curriers and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my device, showing part of the ordinary table A o.
Figure 2, a side view, with the clamp or holder on thc table.
Figure 3, the same, with the holder down out of the road.
` Figure 4 is a front view, with the holder down.
'.lhe nature of my inventionv consists in providing a leather-holder' that can he adjusted by` Vsliding the same ii'om one end of the table to the other,on a tixed ledge or guide-way, with which it is connected, and disengaged in a moment, and removed out of the way, in plaee of the loose clamp-hooks and screws heretofore in use, which always require time to slacken, and when left on the table, are in the road when not in use, and when laid aside, cause a waste of time in again screwing 011 the table.
llo enable others skilled in the art. to make and use my invention, a brief description of the drawings will answer.
Beneath the working-table A, and near the front edge, alongits length, is a board or iron strip, B, having a sunken ledge ou both sides, or flange, on which the plates D, with their' upper end bent inward at right angles, slide. (A tongue and groove might answer equally well.) These plates I) are attached, by screws (l, or otherwise, (or cast on,) to the top pieces or block Il, connected with a central vertical piece, G, on cach end.
The sliding block F has a female screw centrally, and guide-plates g on each end, to embrace the central vertical piece. G. A stout thumb-screw, K 7.', from beneath, enters the female screw in the sliding block F, and extends and turns in a ixed plat-e on the upper block E. A hinged clamp or holder, of suiicient strength, is ecrit-rally connected to the lower and outer edge of the sliding (vertically-sliding) -bloek F. An elastic cord, I, 0r its equivalent, toact spring-fashion, is shown, and the straight edge'c of the holder C is roughened, so as better to secure its hold on the leather. i l
This arrangement of the parts, secured by its lips or flanged plates I) on the guide-ledges of the strip or plate B, can be slid or shifted horizontally from one end of the table to theothcr. It is only necessary to put the leather' in place, and turn up the hinged clamp or holder' C. The adjustment of the screw K will bind the end of the clamp down to hold the leather firmly. A slight relaxation will allow of sliding the same to some other point, or for turning it down, when the spring-cord I, which has theends secured in the sides of' the holder C, and centrally behind, by a headed pin, i, figs. 2 and 3, on the sliding block F, so as to draw the holder backward under the table, as shown by iig. 3, and out ot' the way, is ready to be attached to the leather on the top of the ta-ble in a moment.
Having experienced the inconvenience of the oldfashioned clamps and holders, after' mature study, I have devised the foregoing arrangement as calculated to be of great utility.
I am aware that various kinds of leather-holders and clamps are in use; but I am not aware that anything substantially lilre this was ever before known or used for the purpose.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.Ihe combination and arrangement of a leatherholder, when (constructed with a horizontal sliding block, E D, and vertically-sliding piece F, provided with a set-screw, K, guides y, and the hinged holder C e, together with the grooved support B, all operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
