Description
waited States OSCAR` I. HARRINGTON AND ELIJAH WEAVER, OF WOODS RUN,.
PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent N 94,690, dated September 7, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER CORD OR ROPE. i
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all rwhom fit may concern: p
Be it known that we, OsoAR I. HARRrNG'roN and ELIJAH WEAVER, bot-h of Woods Run, in the conuty of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Leather or Skin Oordiug; and we do hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying dlawings, and to the letters of reference markedA thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in making a leather or skin cordiug, the strands of which are provided with a cotton or hemp filling To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of our speciiication- 1 Figure l represents a section of the cordiug, showing filling and wire used for sewing and binding the cord together.
Figure 2 represents a section of the cording, showing the manner of passing the binding wire through the leather or skin.
In the accompanying drawings- A represents the leather or skin, which is cut in long and narrow strips, the same as used in brming whiplashes. The width of the leather or skin strips will depend on the size and number of strands used in forming the cord.
`B represents'the cotton or hemp illing, which is twisted into threads and formed into a cord. p
O represents the wire used for binding the twisted strands together. The wire C (which should be annealed so` as to be easily bent) is twisted with the strands x x in the process of twisting thecord, and
should pass through the leather or skin-wrapping, as indicated at s, in tig. 2. The shorter the distance between the points where the wire passes through the leather or skin,- the firmer will be the twisted cord. 'lhe strips ot' leather or skin are wrapped around the cotton or hemp iilling, after which the strands a: x and the wire C are twisted into cord, as shown in the accompanying drawings.
Gord or rope, made in the manner described, can be manufactured into whip-lashes, fly-nets, traces, bridles, 85o., and will he found to be Very strong and durable.
In manufacturing the cord for whip-lashes, the use of. wire is dispensed with, and the cotton or hemp filling should not be covered or envelopedby the leather or ,skin-wrapping at the point of the lash, so that the cotton or hemp illiug may be formed into the crackle of the lash.
The means and manner of twisting the cord we leave to the skill and judgment of the mechanic.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and
advantage of our improvement,
What we claim as of our invention, is-
Leather or skin cording, the strands of which are provided with cotton o1` hemp filling, as herein described, and for the'purpose set forth.
Also, leather or skin cording, the strands of which are provided with cotton or hemp iilling, and interwoven with wire, in the manner herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
OSCAR I. HARRINGTON. ELIJAH WEAVER.
