Be it known that I, ALBERT H. DE Von, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, u the county of Union and State vof hcw Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Mechanism for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a Specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invent-ion has for its object to provide differential feeding mechanism for use particularly ingathering or shirring fabrics, which shall be effective in operation and conveniently adjusted for use in different classes of work.
In its preferred embodiment, the mechan-v ism -comprises a primary feed-bar and a work-engaging, member fixed thereon, the feed-bar being pivotally connected with the usual upright arms upon the feed-rock-shaft disposed at the rear side of the machine paralle] with the main-shaft to which it is conne'cted by means of a crank-arm and yoked link-bar embracing an actuating eccentric upon the main-shaft and provided with a roller-stud moving in a run-Way of a feed regulating lever pivotally mounted upon the front of thefmachinc ywhere it is readily accessible to the operator. `Slidingly mounted upon the primary feed-bar is the secondary feed-bar-carrying an independent. work-eugaging member and connected by means of a pit-man with a crank-arm at one end of the secondary feed rock-shaft disposed at the front of the machine parallel with the mainshaft and having a second slotted crank-arm to'whichis adjustably connected the forward end of a link whose rearward end is pivotally connected with a crank-arm upon the primary feed rock-shaft from which the secondary feed rock-shaft thus derives its operative movements. Opposed to the differ-1 enti ally moving primary and secondary feeding members is a three-part presser-footpf which the relatively yielding forward and rearward parts are opposed to said feeding members,` respectively, an intermediate relatively yielding portion being adapted at certan times torest upon the work-plate intermediate said feeding members to insure the 4detention of the fulled material thrust under the presser-foot by the secondary feeddog for the stitching operation.
The present invention includes certain details of construction whichwill be hereinafter described and pointed out in the ap# pended claims.

The machine frame comprises the base 1 from which rises the upright portion 2 of the bracket-arm with ovcrhanging portion 3 in the head 4 of which is journaled the reciprocating needle-bar carryingthe needles 6 mounted in the twin needle-clamp 7. rPhe needle-bar is provided with the usual collar 8 connected by means of thelink 9V with the crank-arm 10 near the forward end of theneedleactuating rock-shaft 11 provided at its rearward end with the lcrankarm 12 connected by means of the yeccentricrod 13 with the actuating eccentric upon the main-she ft 14. In the machine shown in the drawings, in which the looper mechanism occupies almost the entire space beneath the work-plate adjacent the line of feed, it is impracticable to make use of such actuating connections intermediate the primary and secondary feeding devices as have been employed heretofore at the outer end of the machine, and the connection 58 has therefore been disposed in the present machine intermediate the stitch-.forming mechanism and the rear end of the machine Where theneedle-actiiat- .ing eccentric carried bythe main-shaft is lo cated. In addition to the advantage thus gained of locating this connection where there is ample room for its operation com-` bined with the necessary range of adjustment, the point of ad]ustment is brought close to 4the primary feed-regulating lever 34, so tliatbotli adjustments are closely associated together at a very farrable posi-I tion for manipulation bythe operator.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention what I claim herein is 1. In a sewing machine, thecombination with the main-shaft provided with a needle-actiiating member, the work-plate and stitch-forming mechanism comprising a reciprocating needle-bar carrying a needle and an operative connection intermediate `said needle-bar and the needle-actuating member of the main-shaft, of a primary feeding mechanism comprising a feeding so member and an actuating rock-shaft disposed below and extending longitudinally of the work-plate, a secondary feeding mechanism comprising a feeding member disposed upon the same side of the workplate as that of the primary feeding mechanism and an actuating rock-shaft therefor also disposed beloi' and extending longitudinally of the work-plate, means for actuating the first-named rock-shaft, an adjust- 9o able connection between the said rock-shafts and arranged intermediate theI stitchforin` ing mechanism -and :the needle-actuating member of the main-shaft, and means for imparting simultaneous ,rising and falling movements to said feeding members.
