Be it known that I, GEoRon'E. MOLYNEUX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Mechanisms for Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvementsin differential feeding mechanism, designed more particularly for embodiment in a sewing machine in which the work is advanced longitudinally of the tubular work supporting arm. It has for its object to provide a compact and strong construction in which the main and auxiliary feeding members are mounted upon a common rigid supporting member and are connected with means whereby they may be given a relative movement simultaneously with their bodily workadvancing movement, the extent of such relative movement being variable at the will of the operator during the operation of the machine.
In the preferred form of the improvements the machine is provided with a rotary shaft passing through the hollow standard in a direction transverse to the tubular work-supporting arm and carrying within the standard the feed-actuating eccentric and a feed-lift eccentric both operatively connected with the feed-bar fitted within the tubular arm and carrying the main feed-dog. Supported upon the feed-bar at its forward end is a sliding carrier for the auxiliary feed-dog, and a link connects the sliding carrier with a bodily-adjustable rocker formed with spaced arms embracing and movable relatively to a block connected for bodily reciprocation with the feed-bar. To the adjustable rocker is connected a treadleoperated lever by means of which the rockerarms may be bodily adjusted to vary the distance between their axis of movement and the reciprocatory block, a spring connected to the rocker serving to hold the same normally in neutral position so that the feeddogs are moved uniformly.

The frame of the machine is formed with the usual hollow standard 1 to which is secured by screws 2'the end flange 3 of the tubular work supporting arm 4, the upper portion of the standard merging into the overhanging arm 5 terminating in the hollow head 6. Journaled. within and crosswise of the standard 1 is the main-shaft 7 which is provided with a crank or eccentric 8 for the needle-actuating pitman 9 having the usual operative connections with the needle-bar '10 carrying the needle 11 which cooperates with the looper 12, the looper being provided with suitable operative connections with the. main-shaft 7. The machine employs the usual presser foot p, carried by the presser-bar P connected with presser lifting-levers L and L.
As represented in the drawings, the feedbar- 13 hassecured upon its rearward end the strap 13 embracing the feed actuating eccentric 13 and transmitting to the feedbar its operative endwise or work-advancing movements. The feed-bar extends within and lengthwise of the arm 4; and has formed in its forward upper face the socket 14 adapted to receive the shank 15" of the main feed-dog 15 adjustably secured to the feedbar by means of screw 16, the serrated sections of the feed-dog being adapted to extend through the usual longitudinal apertures in the throat-plate 17 Slightly to the rear of its socket 14 the feed-bar 13 is formed with a rectangular slide-way 18 arranged lengthwise of the bar and adapted to receive the slide-block 19 pivotally sustained. by the stud-screw 20 between the spaced lugs 21 of the forked arm 22 of a rock-lever 22 having its apertured hubs 23 entered by the channel pins 24 tapped into the tubular arm 4. The rearwardly-extending portion of the rock-arm 22 carries a stud-screw 25 embraced by the apertured end of a pitman .26 provided with a strap 27 embracing the feed lift eccentric 28 on the shaft 7. i

The opposite side faces 13 of the feedbar 13v are formed near the forward end of the bar with longitudinal guide-ways 30; and fitted upon the bar is a sliding carrier 31 rectangular'in form and provided with the inner opposed ribs 31 which fit-within the said guide-ways 30 The auxiliary feeddog 32 is formed with the curved arms 33 which merge into the open-topped rectangular shank 34 having vertical ribs 35 fitted within the similarly disposed channel-faces formed in the side-walls of the sliding carrier, the auxiliary feed-dog being held in place by means of the screws 36. In connecting the parts the sliding carrier is first fitted upon the feed-bar 13, and thereafter the shank of the main feed-dog 15 is placed in the recess afforded by the open-topped shank of the auxiliary dog and then moved rearwardly until its threaded aperture comes into register with the opening 37 in the sliding carrier, after which the fastening screw 16 may be placed in ppsition through the said opening and turned to secure the main feed-dog to its bar.
To the rear end of the carrier 31 is secured by means of screw 38 one end of alink-bar 39 having its opposite end connected by means of screw 40 with the depending arm 41 of a rocker comprising the said arm and a forked arm 42, both of the arms being fixed.
upon rock-shaft 43 loosely fitted within aligned apertures formed in the spaced arms 44 of a yoke 45 fixed upon a shaft 46 journaled within suitable bearing-apertures in the standard 1 of the machine frame. The spaced members of the forked arm 42 are slidingly fitted within channels formed in a block 47 secured to the feed-bar 13 by means of ball-stud 48 which passes through an upwardly extending lug 49 integral with the feed-bar.
It will be seen that the movements of block 47 with the feed-bar to which it is'attached will actuate the rocker and impart operative movements to the auxiliary feeddog. In its normal position the rocker imparts reciprocatory movements to the'auxiliary feed-dog of like degree with the main feed-dog, so that the two feed-dogs move as one. The rocker is held in its normal position with respect to the block 47 by means of a spring 50 secured atone end to the standard 1 and "atits opposite endto one arm 5.1 of a bell-crank lever fixed upon .the shaft 46 and having its second arm 52 connected with the rod 53 of a treadle device. When the lever arm 52 is depressed it moves the rocker-arm downwardly so that the axis of movement of the forked arm is moved toward the reciprocatory block and hence a greater throw is imparted to the arm 41 and the auxiliary dog operatively connected therewith.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. In a sewing machine, the combination with stitch-forming mechanism, of'feeding mechanism comprising a. feed-bar, a main feed-dog carried by said bar, means for imparting reciprocatory and rising and falling movements to the feed-bar, an auxiliary dog slidingly mounted upon the feed-bar, a rocker connected with and actuated by the feed-bar, a connection between the rocker and the auxiliary dog, and means for bodily moving the rocker relatively to the feed-bar to vary its operative throw.-
In a sewing machine, the combination with a frame, of feeding, mechanism comprising a feed-bar and a main feed-dog carried thereby, means for imparting reciprocatory and rising and falling movements to the feed-bar, an auxiliary dog slidingly mounted on the feed-bar, a rocker having a 100 sliding connection with the feed-bar, alink connecting the rocker with the auxiliary dog,
a rock-lever mounted upon the frame at the rear of the tubular arm and affording a movable fulcrum-support for the rocker, and means exterior to the frame for manipulating the rock-lever to vary the throw of the auxiliary dog during the operation'of the machine.
3. In a sewing machine, the combination with a frame, of feeding mechanism comprisin a feed-bar and a main feed-dog carried t ereby, means for imparting reciprocatory and rising and falling movements to the feed-bar, an auxiliary'dog provided with a carrier slidingly mounted on the feed-bar,
a rocker formed with spaced parallel arms,
a member carried by the feed-bar and embraced by the rocker-arms, a rock-lever affording a movable fulcrum-support for the 12 rocker, a link directly connecting the rocker with the carrier for the auxiliary dog, and treadle-operated means connected with the rock-lever and adapted to bodily move the rocker relatively to the feed-bar without stopping or retarding the action of the latter.
4. In feeding mechanism for sewing'machines, the combination with a feed-bar and actuating means therefor, of a main feeddog carried by said bar, an auxiliary feeddog, a rocker having a sliding connection with the feed-bar, a link connecting the rocker with the auxiliary feed-dog, a rocklever affording a movable fulcrum support for the rocker, and means for manipulating the rock-lever to vary the throw of the auxiliary dog during the operation of the machine.
5. In feeding mechanism for sewing machines, the combination with a feed-bar and actuating means therefor, of a main feeddog carried by said bar, an auxiliary feeddog, a rocker formed with spaced parallel arms, a member carried by the feed-bar and embraced by the rocker arms, a movable fulcrum support for the rocker, a link connecting the rocker with the auxiliary dog, and
treadle operated means connected with the.
fulcrum support and adapted to bodily move the rocker relatively to the feed-bar without stopping or retarding the action of the latter.
6. In feeding mechanism for sewing machines, the combination with a frame, a feedbar and actuating means therefor, a main feed-dog carried b said feed-bar, an auxiliary feed-dog sli ingly mounted upon the feed-bar, a rocking element supported upon the frame and having a movable fulcrum, a connection between said bar and the rocking element whereby the latter is actuated, a connection between said rocking element and the auxiliary feed-dog, and means for varying" the position of the fulcrum for the rockin element.
In feeding mechanism for sewing machines, the combination with a frame, a feed-bar and actuating means therefor, a main feed-dog carried by said bar, an auxiliary feed-dog slidingly mounted upon the feed-bar, a rocking element for actuating said auxiliary dog, a fulcrum for said rocking element carried by the frame, alink-connection between the auxiliary feed-dog and the rocking element, and a contact device held against adjustment on the feed-bar and adapted to transmit motion to said rocking element.
8. In feeding mechanism for sewing machines, the combination with a frame and a driving shaft supported thereby, of a main feed-dog and a reciprocatory driving element connecting the same with the said shaft, an auxiliary feed-dog, a shiftablerocker having a sliding connection with the reciprocatory driving element, a link conmeeting the rocker with the auxiliary feeddog, and means for varying the throw of said rocker during the operating of the machine.
9. In feeding machanism for sewing machines, the combination with a frame and a driving shaft supported thereby, of a main feed-dog and a reciprocatory actuating element connecting the same with the driving shaft, an auxiliary feed-dog, a ,shiftable rocker having a sliding connection with the reciprocatory actuating-element, a link connecting the maker with the auxiliary feeddog,.and means for manipulating the rocker to vary the throw of the auxiliary dog during the operation of the machine.
10. In a differential feeding mechanism, main and auxiliary feed-dogs, means for imparting lifting movements to the dogs, a rocker for differentiating the feeding movements-of the dogs, a pivot for said rocker about which it may beoscillated, and means for shifting the pivot for the rocker to vary the diflerential feeding action of the dogs.
11. In a differential feeding mechanism, main and auxiliary feed-dogs, means for imparting lifting movements to the dogs, means for imparting differential feeding movements to the dogs and including a bodily movable rocker, a pivot for said rocker about which it oscillates in differentiating the feeding movements of the dogs, and a rock-lever for shifting the pivot of the rocker for varying the differential feeding action of the dogs.
12. In a differential feeding mechanism for sewing machines having a tubular worksupporting arm, a rock-lever having a laterally arranged arm parallel to the body of said dogs, an eccentric for imparting feed ing movements to said dogs, and adjustable means between the last named eccentric and the dogs whereby the relative feeding movements of the dogs may be varied.
13. In a sewing machine having a tubular work-supporting arm, a main feed-dog, a main feed-bar supporting the same, means for imparting feeding and lifting movements to said main feed-dog, an auxiliary feed-dog,a channel-shaped carrier for said auxiliary feed-dog, said carrier having inwardly directed ribs on the sides of an extending longitudinally of the channelshaped carrier, said main bar having correspondingly shaped grooves to receive said ribs, said auxiliary dog partaking of the lifting movements of the main dog and having Jneans for moving said carrier longitudia horizontal Work-supporting arm carried by the standard and projecting at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the transverse shaft, a pair of eccentric elements on said transverse shaft, a main feed-dog, a main feed-bar directly connected at one end to one of said eccentric elements and extending lengthwise of and within the arm adjacent the free end of which it supports the main feed-dog, a feed-lift lever fulcrumed within the tubular arm and connected at one end to the other of said eccentric elements on the transverse shaft, said lever at its other end being directly joined by a pinand-slot connection to the main feed-bar by Which connection the main feed-bar is confined against angular rotation about its longitudinal axis and is given rising and falling movements, an auxiliary feed-dog, a
carrier for said auxiliary feed-dog slidingly supported on said main feed-bar, and means for moving said carrier relative to said main-feed-bar to differentiate the feeding movements of the dogs.
