To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that T, Tsrnon LEVI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anniston, in the county of Calhoun and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Labels, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in bottle labels, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a central longitudinalsection through a bottle provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line S3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4; is a central longi tudinal section through a modified form of support for the staff. Fig. 5 is a similar view of another modified form.

The present embodiment of my invention comprises a stafi A of any suitable material provided upon one side with a scale B, and with a label C, and having at intervals throughout the length thereof struck up prongs or barbs D, the said prongs or barbs being struck up from below, as will be evident from an inspection of Fig. 1.

The staff is provided at its upper end with a wire E, having at its free end a ring F, engaged by a ring G, on a second rod H, which is passed through a shelf I glued into the neck of a bottle, the rod being bent above the shelf to retain the parts in place.

The shelf I extends partially across the neck of the bottle, and asecond shelf K is arranged above the shelf I on the opposite side of the bottle neck, and spaced apart therefrom a sufficient distance to permit liquid to flow out between the shelves.

A ring M of suitable buoyant material encircles the stafi A, and is adapted to rest upon the surface of the liquid N in the bottle.

It will be evident from the description that as the liquid is poured from the bottle, the ring M will sink following the liquid, this sinking movement being permitted by the prongs or barbs D. Should however, an attempt be made to refill the bottle, the prongs or barbs will prevent the upward movement of the ring, will be submerged beneath the fluid, thus indicating that the bottle has been partially refilled.

It will be understood that the label on the staff bears the name of the fluid in the bottle, and that the bottle cannot be refilled without its being clearly indicated by the ring.

In Fig. a! the stafi is shown supported by a stopper adapted to be inserted in the neck of the bottle at approximately the level of the shelves 1, K, and the stopper is provided with a number of openings P therethrough for permitting the passage of the liquid from the bottle.

It will be evident that any suitable form of support could be used for the bottle, either integral with the bottle, or secured thereto as shown.

In the form shown in Fig. 5, the cork or stopper Q is provided with a number of longitudinal grooves R for permitting the passage of the liquid, and with a cavity S, having a reduced opening T. The staff A. is provided with a head W received in the cavity S, and with a reduced neck V for engagement in the reduced opening P.

It will be understood that more or less shelves may be used, their object being to prevent interference with the staff.

I claim:

1. The combination with the bottle, of a stafi supported therein, and provided with a plurality of downwardly projecting barbs or prongs of flexible material, the said staff being provided with a scale and with a label to designate the contents of the bottle, and a ring of buoyant material encircling the staff for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination with a bottle, of a stafi supported therein, said stafi being provided at intervals with downwardly projecting struck up barbs or prongs, and a buoyant ring encircling the staff for the purpose set forth.
