DAVID F. MAI-IER, 0F WATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
TYPE-WRITER ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAviD F. MA1-IER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of 7atsonville, in the county of Santal Cruz and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Triter Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an attachment for typewriters being especially designed as a dictators alarm whereby the operator. of the machine may indicate to the person dictating when he may proceed with the dictation; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a typewriting machine provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the alarm device shown in Fig. `l. Fig. 3 shows in elevation the bell striking mechanism shown in Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a somewhat different construction from that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and, Fig. 5 is a detail View of a corner turning` device.
It is sometimes desirable to dictate directly to the typewriter operator so that the letter may be written at once without the iutervention of a stenographer. In so dictating to the machine, much. time is lost both by the person dictating and 'the typewriter operator and I seek to devise a simple alarm device whereby the operator may indicate to the dictator when the dictator may pro ceed with the dictation.
In the construction shown in Figs. l, 2 and 8, the bell A is supported on the framing of the machine, and incloses a striking mechanism including a rack lever B, pivoted at B', and having a rack segment operating through a train of gears upon a revolving or oscillating hammer carrier C, whose hammers C Vmay be moved outwardly by centrifugal action to strike the bell, and
the lower arm of the lever B is connected with the rear end of a push rod D, which eXtendsin the direction of length of the machine through a guide D near the front of the machine with its push button D2 in advance of the machine as shown in Fig. l,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1910.
Application filed January 20, 1909. Serial No. 473,230.
I or it may be readily operated by the machine operator to push back the lower end of the rack lever B and cause the bell to sound, thereturn movement of the push rod D being effected by a spring D3 connected at one end with the machine, and at its other end with a hook D* on the push rod.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4,1 emply a bell A10 supported by the typewriting machine, a lever C10, and a push rod D10. The llever C10 is pivoted between its ends at C11, and has at its upper end a hammer C12 to strike the bell A10 and adapted to fall by gravity away from the bell after the stroke, and the slide rod D10 is secured at one end to the lower end of the lever C10 and extends thence through a guide on the typewriter, to the front of the machine, and has a suitable button or head D1L as shown in Fig. 4l, and a returning spring D12.
As shown in Fig. l, the lever and push rod are located at the side of the machine so they will not interfere with any of the other operations, and the slide rod will be in convenient reach of the operator so the alarm can be sounded without delay at any time. This avoids the necessity of any conversation between the dictator and the operator and the push rod can be quickly operated whenever desired.
Manifestly, the character of the bell may be varied and the particular manner in which the operation of the push rod sounds the bell may be varied without departing from some of the broad principles of my invention.
A typewriter provided on its rear standard `at one side with a bell, a lever pivoted between its ends and arranged at one end to operate in connection with the bell, a slide rod connected with the other end of the lever, guide devices on the typewriter' machine for the slide rod, the latter extending from the lever toward the front of the machine and adapted for operation at the front end of the typewriter machine, substantially as set forth.
