Description

W. I. JUDY.
PBESSED STEELSHOVEL. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 24, 1909.
- UNITED sTAT s PATENTOFFICE. l
WALTER I. JUDY, 0F McKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
rRnssEn-srEEL srrovEL.
- Specification r Letters ratelit.
Application filed September 24', 1909. Serial No, 519,433.'
.To all whom it may concemi Be it known that I, WALTER I. JUDY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Alleghenyand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Pressed-Steel Shovels, of Wl'llCh the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theaccompanying drawing.
This invention relates to' shovels and blanks for making the same and one of the objects thereof is to provide a shovel in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which is simple in construction, durable and inexpensive to manufacture.
Another object of this invention is to constructa shovel of pressed steel, the shovel being made from a blank cut and'bent to .produce a shovel when properly shaped.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel construction shown in the drawingforming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated the preferred'embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes and variations can be resorted to without departing from the scopeof the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of'a shovel blank as cut from sheet metal in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the com leted shovel. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4
I is a vertical sectional view of a portion of of malleable steel.
the shovel handle, and Fig. 5 is fa transverse sectional view through the shovel'handle showing the shovel blade in end elevation. T
In the accompanying drawings the reference numeral 1 denotes the body of a blank, said blank being formed, from a sheet The body 1, has the upper end thereof reduced, as at 2, to .form an extension '3, said extension having the corners thereof cut away, as at 1. The upper end of the body 'l.is also provided with a rectangular opening 5 corresponding in width to the extension 3. The material bordering upon the upperedge of the opening '5 is slit, as at 6, said slits representing a continuation of the vertical walls of the open ing 5 and providing a tongue 7 correspond,
ing -in area to the extension 3. The lower corners of the tongue 7 are cut away, as at 8, for a purpose that will hereinafter appear.
The lowef'end of the body 1 is enlarged,- as at 9, and the vertical edges of said en- !largement incline slightly toward the. free edges of the body-1 by curved ed es- 10,
Patented Jan. 11; 1910.
end thereof, the vertlcal edges ,of-said enlarge-ment being. connected to the. vertical.
curved in a reverse order, thesecurve edges being adapted to serve functionally as stiffening ribs, as will hereinafter a pear.
The blankis pressed and folde to provide shovel consisting of a tubular handle bar 11,
a scoop shaped shovel blade 12 and a stirrupa shovel, as shown in .Figs. 2 and 3, said,
shaped handle 13. The tubular handle bar [11 is formed by bending the vertical edges of the body lfinwardly and the Y blade 12 is formed by pressing the enlargement 9 ad-,
and the tongue 7 to form a barrel 16 between the arms 17 of the handle. The corners are removed from the extension 3 and'the tongue 7 whereby no trouble will be experienced in bending said extension and tongue between the arms 17. h
The manner in which the blank is shaped and pressed insures rigidity of the shoveland a saving of material without increasing the weight relative to an ordinary shovel.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new is:- y
1. A blank for manufacturing shovels,
comprising a body, said body having the lowerend thereof enlarged and adapted to form a blade, said body-having the upper end thereof provided with: an extension and anopeningin alinement with said extension, the material bordering upon the upper edge of said opening being slit to'form a tongue vto be bent to form a hand-grip, and said bodyv adapted to have the longitudinal edges thereof bent toform a, tubular handle bar.
I '2. A shovel formed complete of a single tion widenedv at one end to form an enlargement and reduced in Width at its other end to form an extension, said body rovided with an opening and a tongue exten ing-into the opening, the tongue and the extension adapted in conjunctionlwith said extension blank of sheet metal comprising a body-porbeing adapted to be bent toward each other I In testimony whereof I affix my signature to iorm a hand grig and sgid bgdy adapteg in the presence of tW0 witnesses. to ave its lon itu inal e es ent towar h each other to orm the shve1 hsnclle, the WALTER JUDY 5 said enlarged portion ef the blank adapted Witnesses:
to have its edges bent so that the enlarge- I KARL H. Bum, ment constitutes the shovel blade. Y Ma HEDDEN.
