No; 891.412. PATENTED JUNE 23,190'8.' H.- s.- EARLE.
' HOE APPLICATION FILED FEB. 3, 19 02.
WITNESSES.
' 1 desi UNITED STATES HORATIO S. EARLE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
HOE
Specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented .Tune 23, 1908.
Application filed February 3, 1902. Serial No. 92,283.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORATIO S. EARLE, a c1t1zen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoes; and I do de clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to hoes and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fullyset forth and pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to construct a hoe in which the blade and socket are made of an integral piece of sheet metal, the parts being so formed as to leave a central opening through the blade and the stock which is cut out to form said opening is shaped into a socket for the handle without detaching it from the body of the blank. The above object is attained by the structure illustrated in 'the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a .hoe made in accordance with my invention, a
ortion of the handle being broken away. *ig. 2 is a plan of the blank from which the hoe and socket are formed. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the socket rolled into shape. Fig. 4 is a view like Fig. 3, showing the ton ue which connects the socket with the hoe ent backward so as to extend the socket in line with the blade. Fig. 5 shows the completing step in the formation of the hoe wherein the members which connect the blade of the hoe with the socket are curved to cause the blade to stand at the proper angle with respect to the socket and handle, and said blades curved to add the proper dish thereto. Fig. 6 is a vertical section as on line 6-6 of Fig. 5, showing the handle in position in the socket.
Referring to the characters of reference, ates the blade of the hoe, and 2 the curve members which connect the blade with the socket 3, all of which parts are formed integral from a single piece of sheet metal of the requisite quality.
In forming this hoe, a blank is struck out as shown in Fig. 2, the central portion of which is cut out to form a central opening 4 through the blade. The metal that is cut out in forming this opening is shaped as shown at 3-in Fig. 2 and is connected to the curved members 2 by a ton ue 5 which unites with said curved members at their point of junction. The central portion 3 shown in Fig. 2 is rolled into the shape shown in Fig. 3, forming a socket for the reception of thehandle 6. The tongue 5 is then folded outwardly on dotted line 7, causing said socket to project in a plane with the blade as shown in Fig. 4. The members '2 are then bent to cause the blade to stand at the proper angle with relation to the socket when the meeting edges of the metal forming the socket are brazed together as on line 8, and the meeting faces of the tongue 5 and the curved junction of the members 2 are also brazed and said brazed parts are dished, or rendered concavo-conveX in cross section to correspond with the contour of the socket, whereby the tapered end of the handle may be passed through the socket and caused to lie in said concavity as shown at 9 in Figs. 1 and 6, rendering said parts strong and rigid and firmly uniting the handle thereto.
The curved shape of the members 2 of the blade which unite it to the socket adds great strength to said members and at the same time allows such resiliency as to afford a yielding or springin connection between the blade and socket, a eature desirable in some classes of work. The opening 4 throu h the center of the blade prevents an accumu ation of weeds and clods in advance of the hoe, as said 0 ening allows said substances to pass through as the hoe is drawn forward in its work.
It will be observed that in forming the socket out of the material which is cut away in forming the central opening, no waste of material occurs, enabling the hoe to be very chea ly made, at the same time the folding of t e tongue across the junction of the what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An article of manufacture, comprising a blade having side members which curve u wardly and inwardly and are integral y united at their inner ends, a socket member formed integral with the side members and connected thereto at the juncture of said side members, said socket member crossing the side members at the juncture thereof and extending therefrom in a lane substantially at right angles to the bla e.
2. The combination of a blade having a central opening therethrough, curved members on each side of said 0 ening a socket member attached to said blac e by said members, said curved members being bent downwardly between the socket and blade to cause the blade to stand at an angle to the socket, substantially as set forth.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a blade, having side members attached thereto at their lower ends and united at their upper ends, means carried by the side members for attachment of a handle, said side members being carried downwardly between the handle and the blade.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
HORATIO S. EARLE.
