JACOB JAMESON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
- Letters Patent No. 94,605, dated September 7, 1869..
IMPROVED COMPOSITIOH-ILUZ'IOR MANUFACTURE GPIRON STEEL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making put-o! the samQ.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB JAMEBQN, of Philadelphia, inthe county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composition or Flux for Iron and Steel; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.-
My invention relates to the manufacture of iron and steel; and
It consists in a new composition, to he added to the metal while in the furnace, for the purpose of improving the quality, by increasing its strength, and also its hardness, if desired, as hereinafter more fully'explained. p
Various ingredients have been heretofore used as a flux, in the manufactureof iron and steel, for the purpose of-i-mproving its quality. I
After experimenting with various ingredients, I have found that the following composition serves the desired purpose in an admirable manner, and that by adding it to iron or steel, as hereinafter described, the quality of the metal is greatly improved.
To prepare my composition, 1 take as follows:
Silicic acid, thirty-eight parts.
Alumina, three parts.
Magnesia, five parts.
Potash, two parts.
Magnetic iron, forty parts.
Peroxide of iron, ten ports.
the puddling furnace with pig-metal in the usual manner, and to every one hundred pounds of the pig-metal I add about twenty pounds of the composition, work ing it in thoroughly :with the. iron.
In making cast-iron, I add the composition to the charge in the .cupola, in the proportion of about one hundred and sixty pounds to the too of metal.
In all cases, the proportion must be varied to suit the qualityof the iron or ore used; the poorer the iron or ore, the more of the composition to beadded.
If it be desired to produce a veryhard' quality of cast-iron, a larger proportion of the com position should he used. 7
I. have found by experiments that iron and steel of all kinds, when made with the addition of this composition, are greatly improred in quality, the grain being finer in cast-iron, and both it and the wroughtiron and steel being very strong, the tensile strength of the two latter being greatly increased.
Having thus described my invention,
\Vhat I claim, is-
The herein-desclihed composition, asaflux for the manufacture of ironand steel.
