and is directed to the provision of a machine adapted for ofiice use, which can be run' at comparatively high seed by an unskilled operator, and with which prints maybe produced in close imitation of typewritten work.
The invention involves the provision of a printi'n -machine having a bed on which a form 0 type is supported, an ink-ribbon coacting with the printing faces of the type, a rotatable pressure-roller, and means, such as endless carriers, for moving the pressureroller in one direction over the type and in coaction therewith to effect the printing, and then in the other direction on the opposite side of the type-form and the bed therefor to return the roller to initial position.
One object of the invention is to provide in a machine of this type improved operating mechanism whereby the machine may be operated either manually or from a source of power, the devices by which this'is ac-. complished being so arranged as to make the structure very ;compact and to permit of convenient operation. of the machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved mechanism for delivering the sheets after they have been imprinted upon. This delivery mechanism includes a device adapted to engage the rear edge of a sheet after the latter has been imprinted upon and push the sheet ahead of it away from the printing position, this delivery de vice being arranged to reciprocate and being actuated in one direction by the mechanism for moving the, pressure-roller and then antomatically released and retracted by a spring.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which F igure'l is a plan view of the machine broken away and sectioned in part; Fig. 2 is an elevation broken away in part; Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of portions of the operating mechanism ta ken just inside the framemember shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the motor-driven operating device; Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of the manual operating device; and Fig. 6 is a detail view in section on line 66 of Fig. 5.
Referring to these drawings, the machine consists of a base A, on which are mounted side-frames B, B, disposed parallel to each other. iExtending between the side t'rames and mounted for rotation in bearings therein, are two shafts C, C, connected together, so as to operate in unison, and one provided with a handle 0 for turning the two shafts. These shafts carry eccentrics, upon which is mounted the bed 0' for supporting the chase a in which the type-form c is locked in the ordinary manner. An arc-shaped member 0* is mounted upon the sideframe B and provided with a number of holes into any one of which a pin 0 may be inserted to facilitate positioning the handle 0. The mechanism above described permits of raising or lowering the bed 6 and the form of type thereon,
so as to accurately position the same, but it will be understood that any'other suitable mechanism for accomplishing this purpose may be provided. An ink-ribbon D overlies the printing faces of the type a its ends bechain lying adjacent to one of the sideframes. v
A shaft 6 is mounted for rotation in bearings formed in the side-frames and carries two sprocket-wheels e on which the chains e run. At the other end of the machine are two stub-shafts, e upon each of which is rotatably mounted a similar sprocket-wheel for one of the chains 6. The side-frames B and B may each be provided with inwardly extending flanges e and c and the roller E may have disks upon the ends thereof adapted to travel between these flanges so as to cause the roller E to move in a horizontal by power. The operation of the delivery mechanism will be readily understood from the foregoing description. A .printing machine having a bed a form of type thereon, an ink-ribbon overlying the printing faces of the type, a rotatable pressureqoller, endless carriers on which said roller is mounted, means for actuating said carriers to move the roller in one direction in coaction with the ty e to efiect the printing and in the opposite irection on the other'side of the type and bed to return the roller to initial position, a delivery same from rmtin position, means-for moving said de ivery evice'in accordance with the movement of said carriers to deliver a sheet, and a spring put under tension during the movement of the delivery device and adapted to return said device to initial position, substantially as set forth.

14. -A printing-machine having sideframes, a bed between the same, a type-form on said bed, a roller adapted to move bodily over the type and in -coaction therewith, ways formed on said side-frames, a delivery device adapted to slide-,upon said ways and to engage a sheet while the same is at rest in printing position and deliver the sheet, means or moving said device in one direction, and a spring connected to said device and put under tension during the movement thereof, said spring being adapted to return said deviceto initial position, substantially as set forth.
