the foundation 1 has the upper edges thereof 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN mm, or znnmuoi-Ln, PENNSYLVANIA.
MON ENT on romns'roun' To all whom'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Irrr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Zelienople, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Monuments or .Tombstones, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
monuments,
present a neat and attractive appearance and be free from injury from the forces of nature.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described and then claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1' is a side elevation of a monument or tombstone constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is 4 av plan of the monument 'or'tombstone and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. 4
In the drawings 1 denotes an oblong foundation that can be made of concrete, natural stone, vitreous material, or any suitable material havin lasting qualifications. The concrete is pre erable as the same can be molded or ornamented above a grave to completely In the present instance,
beveled or ornamented, as at 2.
v a lane below the raised portion l.
designates an oblong slab having a cen- *tral oblong ralsed portion 4 whereby the marginal portion of the slab will exten d fiin 1S sla is made of a vitreous material, as'trans parent glass andhas the peripheral edges thereof hermetically sealed upon the foundation 1, cement or a similar adhesive material in a plane 5 being used for this purpose. The raised portion 4 of the slab in connection with the foundation 1 provides an oblong compartment 6, and in this compartment can be placed any records of the deceased. The under or inner side of the raised portion 4 of the slab can be silvered, to providefa mirror adapted to reflect objects placed upon the slab.
8 designates an ornamental oblong casing adapted to be seated upon the marginal 'portion of the slab 3 and inclose the raised and in connection with theslabi portion 4 3 provide an oblong compartment 9. The casing 8 is made of a vitreous material, as transparent glass, and theedges of the cas ing 8 are hermetically" sealed, as at 11, to the upper edges of the slab 3, whereby objects as mementos, records, and tributes of the deceased will be fully protected and safely preserved. The casing 8 upon the under or inner side'thereof at -'the head of said casing is provided with an inverted photograph, engraving or picture 7 of the deceased, which will be reflected in the mirror of the slab 3. The casing 8 at the head thereof and upon the top side above the picture 7 is provided with an enlargement 12 over which is adapted to fit and be hermetically sealed, as at 13, an ornamental dome or column 14 made of a vitreous material. The enlargement. 12 is adapted to support a name or inscription plate, (not shown) or such data as will identify the deceased. The dome ,or column 14 is preferably made hollow, whereby a bust, or statuette of the. deceased canbe placed in the same, and the top of the dome or column can be provided with an ornament 14*.
It is thought that the utility of my monument or tombstone for the purposes for which it is intended, will be fully under.- stood, and while in the drawings there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it'ls obvious that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed as to design, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, is
1. Ina monument for aves, the combination of a foundation, 0 a slab of vitreous material having a raised portion whereby the marginal portion of the slab will extend low the raised portion whereby said slab in connection with said foundation Specification or Letters Patent, Patented Jan. 4, '1910. Application filed Kay 17, 1909. Serial H 6; 496,552.;
'will provide a con'ipartment, said slab connected to said foundation, whereby saidtion ofthe slab and forming in connection. with the slab a. compartment, said casing connected to the marginal portion of the slab whereby said last-mentioned compartment will be hermetically sealed, and means to constitute a dome mounted upon said casing and connected to the casing whereby the chamber formed by the dome will be hermetically sealed. 2. In a monument for graves, the combination of a foundation, of a slab of vitreous material having a raised portion whereby the marginal portion of the slab will extend in a plane below the raised portion whereby said slab in connection with said foundation will provide a compartment, said slab connected to said foundation, whereby said compartment will be hermetically sealed, an oblong casing seated upon the marginal portion of the slab inclosing the raised portionof the slab and forming in connection with the slab a compartment, said casing connected to the marginal portion of the slab whereby said last-mentioned compartment will be hermetically sealed, and means to constitute a dome mounted upon said casing and connected to the casing whereby the chamber formed by the dome Will be metically sealed, and said slab being silvered to provide a. mirror.
3. Ina monument for graves, the combination of a foundation, of a slab of vitreous material having a raised portion whereby the marginal portion of the slab will extend in a plane below the raised port-ion whereby said slab in connection with said foundation will provide a compartment, said slab connected to said foundation, whereby said compartment will be hermetically sealed, an oblong casing seated upon the marginal portion of the slab and inclosing the raised portion of the slab and forming in connection with the slab a compartment, said casing connected to the marginal port-ion of the slab whereby said last-mentioned compartment will be hermetically sealed, said casing having its outer face at one end enlarged,
and means to constitute a dome seated upon said casing and mcloslng said raised portion and connected to the casing whereby the chamber formed by the dome will be hermetically sealed.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
