Be it known that I, ANGELO MANNELLO, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mandolin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is an improvement in mandolins, having for its purpose to improve the tone of the instrument and render the notes clear and distinct. I have discovered that a mandolin securing these advantages is produced by constructing the body oi the instrument of two cases, an inner case and an outer case respectively, both cases being of substantially the same shape and spaced from each other at both the sides and bottom, the inner case preferably having a number of openings in the bottom for the escape of the sound waves.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref erence indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a plan of a mandolin constructed in accordance with my invention;
and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, partly in central longitudinal section.
The body portion of the instrument is constructed of two cases, an inner case 5 and an outer case 6, both being of the same general form and spaced apart at both the sides and bottom. The belly 5 of the instrument seats on the edge of and entirely covers the inner case 5 and is arranged in substantially the plane of the top edge of the outer case 6. The two cases are permanently secured together in spaced relation at each side and ateach end, the connection between the cases at the sides being effected by screws 7 passing from the outer case into the inner case and through spacing buttons 8 arranged in the intermediate groove. At the outer end of the body of the mandolin the two cases are secured together by, a screw 9 passing through a spacingblock 10. Both cases oi the mandolin body are rigidly connected to the sh ulder 12 of the neck. The connection between the shoulder 12 of the neck and the two cases oi the mandolin body, is rendered secure by the block 18, arranged within and conforming to the inner end portion of the inner case. In the bottom oi the inner case near its inner end portion are formed a number of holes 14: for the escape of the sound waves into the space between the two cases.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. in a musical instrument, a body comprising two cases arranged one within the oth r and spaced apart at the sides and bottom, with the top of the inner case having a belly and arranged in substantially the same plane as the top edge or the outer case, spacing buttons arranged between the two cases at opposite sides of the mandolin, means passing through the spacing buttons, joining the two cases together, and means securing the cases together at opposite ends.
2. A mandolin having a body comprising an inner and outer case secured together and spaced apart at the sides, the body having a belly arranged atthe top of both cases and sealing the top or the inner case.
A mandolin having a body comprising an inner and outer case secured together and spaced apart at the bottom and sides, the bottom oi the inner case perforated and the body having a belly closing the top of the inner case.
