ALBERT 1B. DICK, OF LAKE FOREST, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR-TO A. B. DICK COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
STENCIL-DUPLICATING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1910.
Application filed February 19, 1909. Serial No. 478,855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. DICK, a citizen, of the United States, residing at Lake Forest, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stencil-Duplicating Apparatus, (Case 13,) of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates particularly to that type of stencil-duplicating machines in which is employed a drum, having rotary or oscillatory movement, provided over part or all of its periphery with a foraminated stencil-carrier, outside which a waxed stencilsheet is secured in position and to the interior of which the ink is supplied, such ink, on passing through said stencil'carrier and through the interstices in said stencil-sheet, being deposited upon impression sheets pass ing between the periphery of said drum and another member, such as an underlying pressure-roller.
Duplicating apparatus of this type as heretofore employed has been provided with ink by means of a brush, manually operated, to convey the ink to and distribute it over the inner surface of the stencil-carrier.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide, chiefly for duplicating apparatus of this type, means for carrying the ink within the stencil-carrying drum, for depositing it upon the carrier of said drum, and for distributing it upon said carrier, either over the entire area thereof or at such portions as may be desired.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a central longitudinal section of a duplicating machine of the rotary type, showing my improvement (in elevation) applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a central transverse section through the duplicator-drum, showing the inking apparatus herein to be described, partly in section and partly in elevation; Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the inking apparatus in inoperative position; Fig. 4tis a section on the line 4i4; Fig. 2 and Fi 5 is an inverted plan view, showing one of the valves illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4.
Referring to these drawings, there are here illustrated the main frame-members having upwardly extending arms A, A, in which are carried stubs-shafts a, a, supporting the drum, which comprises the heads a a connected by tie-bars a a, and having the stencil-carrier a of foraminated material, and ink-pad a over which the waxed stencilsheet is secured in any suitable manner. Underlying the stencil-carrying drum, is the pressure-roller B mounted in hinged springpressed arms B and controlled by throw-01f mechanism including shaft 1) and eccentrics 6. These parts need not be further described in detail, since they form no part of the present invention.
C designates the ink-container, here shown as tubular in form, although obviously it may be of any suitable design. It s supported at one end by a bearing 0 formed therein, which receives the end of the stubshaft a, and at the other end by means of a pin a journaled in the stub-shaft a. The container G, having filling-port c, is here shown as provided with a member of handoperated valves 1) extending through it, each in a housing d having therein a coil-spring d surrounding the valve-stem (Z connected at its upper end with finger-piece d. Each of the valve-stems (Z is provided at its, lower end with a ball-and-socket joint d, whereby it is connected to a double valve-head d coacting with ports d, the ball-and-socket joint assuring tight closure of said ports, when the parts are in the position in which they are illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4. The valve-heads are shown as arranged within a downwardly-depending hollow extension E of the container casing, and, to prevent disarrangement, may be provided with ears 6, 6. There may, of course, be any number of valves and ports for the egress of the ink.
F designates an inkdistributing device, here shown in the form of a roller carried at its ends in arms 7' pivotally mounted at f on a downwardly-projecting integral portion e of the container casing. With one or both of said arms, is associated a spring exerting outward pressure upon said roller F. In the present case, I have shown such a spring 7' at one end of the roller, and at the other end a catch for locking said roller in inoperative position, this comprising the arm 7" having a curved end adapted to coact with the shank of the screw 7'" carrying the stencil-securing clamp or bail '1he arm f is mounted upon the pivot f and connected with a spring-arm f havingfingerpiece 7", said spring-arm having a notch coacting with one or the other of'two pins f The interior of the drum is provided with moved inward toward the axis of the drum,
and the arm brought into coaction with the screw 7. In this position, the inking apparatus and the drum will move together. Upon moving the finger-piece f and arm 7 into contact with the pin i the arm f is released from the screw 7, thereby again permitting the inking apparatus and the drum to move relatively to each other.
The inking apparatus and the drum may be moved relatively to each other for the distribution of the ink in any suitable manner. Thus, particularly where, as in the present case, but a portion of the periphery of the drum is covered by the stencil-carrier and stencil sheet, said container may be grasped by the hand and oscillated so as to bring the roller F into contact with the stencil-carrier or any part thereof. Or, if desired, the inking apparatus may be locked in a fixed position and the drum partially rotated, back and forth, for the same purpose. In the drawings, I have shown a lock Ur secured by means of slot 9 and screw 9 to the rearward end of the ink-container. The upper end of said lock is provided with a slot which receives the stub-shaft a, which does not rotate with the drum but is immovable relatively thereto. Said stub-shaft is provided with a notch, and with this coacts a lug g formed upon the lock Gr. \Vhen,
therefore, the lock is in the position in which it is illustrated in Fig. 1, the ink-container is immovable relatively to the drum, in which case, after ink has been deposited either upon the roller F or in advance of said roller, the drum may be partially rotated, to and fro, whereupon said roller will be brought into contact with the carrier as above described. The lock G is here shown as provided with a downward extension g making contact with an appurtenance of the roller (in this particular case, a portion of the spring F), to assure contact of the periphery of said roller with the internal face of the stencil-carrier.
WVhen the roller F rides up on the shoulder 7, the lock G is moved upwardly and the lug 9 released from its coacting slot in the stub-shaft a, thereby permitting the inkcontaining and -distributing mechanism to move with the drum.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is as follows:
