To all whom it may concern Be it known that, I, JOHN W. HEIDER, residing atflChicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bronzing-Machines, of which the followingis afull description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. In Figs. 1 and 2 the cylinder and other parts shown are in the posit-ion which they occupy when a sheet which has been bronzed is just ready to pass from the bronzing-cylinder to the delivery apparatus. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, the front of the bronze-fountain and of the bronzing-chamber being removed. Fi 4 is a vertical section at line w .40 of Fig. 1, the bronzing-cyliudcr and the delivery-cylinder being in the position which they occupy just before the grippers; of the bronzing-cylinder grasp the sheet. Figs. 5 and -6 are details, Fig.6 being a. section of the parts shown, taken at line y, Fig. 5.
.One object of myinvention is to provide for agitating the bronze automatically; and my improvements which relate to this feature consist in providing the bronzefountain with an agitator which isautomaticall y reciprocated in a longitudinal direction with respect to the fountain, in connecting such agitator with the bronzing-pad by means of a cross-bar, so that the two will move simultaneously, in a cam combined with the agitator-shaft and bronzing-pad shaft, and lever-connections for operating such shafts. My invention further consists in arranging the head upon the nipper-shaft which carries the sheet into the machine upon the iusideof thebronzing cylinder, and providing such head with two slots inthe periphery of the head, so formed and arranged that the nippers ,Wlll act quickly when grasping the sheet to carry it into the machine, but will operate more slowly when releasing the sheet;
In the drawings, A represents a main frame which supports the bronzing machinery, as
asnearly as possible, as is common, to prevent the escape of the bronze which does not adhere.
B is an'inclined table, on which the sheets to be bronzed are placed, and from which they are fed to the machine.
C is the cylinder upon which the sheets are heldwhile being bronzed. D is thebronzefountain, having a narrow longitudinal opening in the bottom, through which the bronze falls upon the sheet, which opening can be enlarged or diminished in width by means of a sliding plate, as usual. I also provide slides, by theuse of which any desired portion of this opening may be entirely closed,as maybedesired in bronzing sheets of differeutwidths.
E is a longitudinal shaft, having hearings in the ends of the bronze-fountain D, and'located preferably above the opening in the bot tom thereof, and it is provided with a number of thin teeth, 9, or short arms, which extend downward into the opening in the bottom of the fountain. The shaft E is so secured in thefounta-in that it can have a reciprocating longitudinal movement without rotating, and such shaft and the teeth thereon together form an agitator. The shaft E extends some dis: tance beyond the fountain at one end, and is there provided with a coil-spring, a, which is so arranged that its tendency is to hold and throw such shaft outward.
F is a shaft or bar which carries a bronzingpad, which pad is arranged and operates substantiallyin the usual man ner, except ashorein specified. This shaftor banFLeXtends out beyondthe frame of the machine upon one side, as shown in Fig.1, and it is provided. with the coil-spring b, which is so arranged that its tendency is to throw the shaft .F outward].
The outer ends of the shafts E and F are connected together by means of a short crossbar, 0, so that the two shafts E and F vibrate together. (Z is the bronzing-pad.

H is a shaft which carries the grippers ,of the bronzing-cylindcr. It is supported in suit- Ico able bearings, as usual, one of whieh,I, is shown in Fig. 5, upon one side of which are secured two stops, h.
J is a head upon one end of the shaft H, which head is located within the cylinder 0, which enables me to bring the casing upon that side of the machine close to the end of the cylinder C. In the periphery of'the head J there are two recesses or open slots, 2' and j, which are different in form, as shown in Fig. 4. By means of these slots and pins k and is, secured upon the inside of the frame, a partial rotation is given to the head J, the pin It being arranged to engage with the slot t, and the pink being arranged to engage with the slot j. The slot j is considerably wider at its outer end than is the outer end of the slot i. Upon the inside ot'the head J is a pin, 1, located between and arranged to come in contact with the stops h h.
m is a rod,one end of which is pivoted upon the inside of the head J. The other end passes through a hole in a plate or bar, 12, upon the inside of the cylinder 0.
0 is a coil-spring around the rod m, between a collar thereon and the bar a.
p is one of the grippers on the shaft H,which grippers are arranged to open and close, as
usual, except asherein specified.
K is the delivery-cylinder, provided with a shaft carrying grippers, constructed and operating as usual.
I haveshown by dotted lines in Fig. 4 the position of the pins k k, which cause the head J to move, and also the position of the pins which operate the head of the gripper-shaft of the delivery-cylinder.
The guides-f are secured at one end toa rock-shaft, as usual, and motion is given to this shaft by means of the arms qq, which are operated by means of an eccentric on the shaft of the cylinder 0.
The devices which give a vibratory movement to the agitator and to the bronzing-pad are as follows:
Lis a disk upon the shaft of the cylinder 0, provided upon one side with a series of cams, r.
is a bell-crank lever, pivoted at or near its center to an arm, N, which projects out from the side of the frame. The lower end of this bell-crank lever is provided with a frictionroller arranged to come in contact with 'the face of the bar 0, which connects the shafts of the agitator and bronzing-pad.
P is a bar, the upper end of which is pivoted to the upper and inner end of the bell-crank lever M. The other end of this bar P is provided with a friction-roller, arran ged to come in contact with the periphery of the camdisk L.
Q is a bar, the upper end of which is pivoted to the bar P, and the lower end is pivoted upon a projection upon the side of the main frame. ThebarQservesthepurposeofsteadying the bar P and keeping its lower end in proper position. 7
R are devices for adjusting the position of the cleaning-rollers Gr.
The slotj in the head J is not cut in a direct line from the periphery toward the center of the head, but is at a considerable angle thereto. This location of the slot is important in causing the grippers to release the sheet gradually.
The operation is as follows: The sheets to which bronze is to be applied are fed to and delivered from the machine substantially in the usual manner, there being these differences between the devices commonly used and those I have shown and described: The head J is located inside the cylinder instead of outside thereof, which enables me to place the frame upon this side very close to the edge of the cylinder 0. The form of the slot 2' in the head J is such that when this slot comes in contact with the pin the nippers will close upon'the sheet very rapidly; and the form of the slot j, the same being much larger than i, is such that when this 'slotj comes in contact with the -'pin 7c the nippers will he opened gradually for the purpose of giving the nippers upon the delivery-cylinder K more time" to grasp the sheet. The head J, which is upon thegrippershaft of the delivery-cylinderK, is located with in'the cylinder K. The'rod m and coil-spring o serve the purpose of holding the head J, in whatever position it may be placed, until forciblychanged-by coming in contact'with the pins'k k.
The agitator in the bronze-fountain and the bronzing-pad'are caused to vibrate longitudinally and simultaneously, and at the proper time for delivering and distributing the bronze to-and uponthe sheet, by means of the camdisk L, bar P, and bell-crank lever M, and
springs a b. The tendency of the springs to and I) is to throw and hold the two shafts E and F out, and these shafts are caused to vibrate longitudinally and rapidly by the action of the'springs a b, and the movement of the bell-crank lever, which is operated by the cams i", which act upon the lower end of the bar P as the cylinder 0 revolves. The lower end of the bell-crank lever forces the shafts E and F inward. The springs a and b throw them outward.
The springs a and b are not a necessity, and motion could be given to the agitator and bronzing-pads in both directions without these What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a bronzing-machine having a bronzefountain provided with a longitudinal slot in its'bottom, a longitudinal reciprocating agitator located in said fountain, and composed of a shaft and depending fingers, the latter a disk, L, provided with cams r, bell-crank lever M, and bar P, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The head J of the gripper-shaft of the cylinder 0, provided with the slots. #3 and j, formed as shown and described, in combination with the pins 7c and 70 upon the frame, whereby the grippers will act quickly when grasping the sheet and will open slowly when releasing the sheet, substantially as specified.
