LEXVIS GUTHR-IE, OF \VATERLOO, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOUBLE CORN-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 91,490, dated September 7, 1869.
T0 or whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS GUTHRIE, of Vaterloo, Fayette county, Indiana, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Double Corn-Plows; and I do hereby deelare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings which accompany this specification, forming a part of the same, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a corn-plow having two separate and independent moles or plows with a new and original device for lateral expansion or contraction of the distance between the moles or plows.
It further consists in a device for raising or lowering the handles of a corn-plow, so as to accommodate it to the proper height of the operator.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same.
Like letters of reference upon the drawings refer to like parts.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved implement. Fig. 2 is a top view of the head-block used in the same.
In Fig. 1, B B represent the handles of the plow. A is the beam, and O O are upright posts, which support the rear end of the handles, and to which they are attached by the rods 1) and 6, these rods being supplied with screw-threads and jam-nuts. The lower ends of the post 0 G are provided with slotted openings for the reception of screw-bolts, by means of which they may be raised and lowered upon the sheth of the plow, and fastened to the same at any desired point of elevation. The sub-beams D D are curved outward from the center laterally, to the rear end of which, at right angles, are attached the sheths I I, which carry the moles or plows E E. The front ends of the sub-beams DD are provided with slots or mortises, which receive the head-block H, by which the draft is communicated to them'from the beam A. The headblock H is rigidly inserted in the beam A, at right angles, at a point near the center of its length, its front being notched in a suitable manner to receive and hold in position the loops of the front ends of the sub-beams D D. WVedges i t are placed in these loops, upon the back edge of the head-block, which serve to hold the loops in the proper notches of the head-block. The sub-beams D D are of unequal length. which serves to place one plow in front of the other, thus securing a better operation of the implement. The outer ends of the head-block II are provided with round projections upon either end, which receive the forward ends of the handles, and upon which they turn, when the handles are raised or lowered, by means of the slots in the lower ends of the posts 0 O, secured, as already de scribed, to the sheths I I.
To set the plows for narrower or wider work, the keys t i are withdrawn, and the loops of sub-beams are adjusted in the proper notches, the upper ends of the posts 0 O are moved upon the rods 1) e to the desired position, when the jam-nuts are adjusted, and the keys 1" 'i are driven home, and the implement, in its changed form, is ready for use.
The plows, as shown in the drawings, are arranged so as to move the loose soil toward the center; but by reversing them, and placing each plow upon the other sheth, which may readily be done by means of the screw-bolts, they may be arranged to move the soil from the center outward each way; or by the use of duplicate of either the right orleft hand plow the soil may all be moved either way, as may be desired, and in greater or less quantities, as may be provided by the distance to which the plows are set apart, and by the depth which they are made to run.
The guard-plate G is attached to the landside of the plow, forming a shield or guard to prevent clods and lumps from being thrown upon the plants of the growing crop, and which may be detached when their service, from any cause, is not required.
The rear end of the beam A is provided with a hole, through which passes a rod, a, the ends of which are secured to the sub-beams D D. The central portion of the rod a is furnished with a screw-thread and a jam-nut upon either side of the beam A, by which means the line of draft is adjusted as may be required.
Having thusfully described my said improve- 3. The combination of the posts 0 0, subbeams D D, and handles B B, substantially as set forth.
ment, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The head-block H, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the head-block H, LE\VIS GUTHRIE. the sub-beams D D, and the posts 0 O with the sheths I I, the reversible plows E E, and Witnesses: guards G G, in the manner and for the pur- EDWIN GRAWLEY, poses herein specified. WM. T. DENNIS.
