IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES FOR ELEVATING- PUMIP-TUBBS.
The Schedule referred to in thesa Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be itkuowu that 1, Julius A. FLEMING, of Shamberg, in the county of Venango, and State of Penn- 1 sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Swivel-Wrench and Clamp for Artesian Wells; and I do hereby declare the following to be a a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, making a part ofthis specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvenient,

Figure 4 is a side view of the jointing-end of a rod. Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
Hcrctofore, in putting in or removing the rods of oil and other deep wells, great difliculty has been experienced on account of the liability of the apparatus used, to let them slip and drop into the wells. This always involves a great loss of timcand money to the operators, for-they can only he recovered by grappling-irous and other instruments, and the use of these instruments in the contracted space of an oil-well is very tedious and vexatious.

The nature of it consists of a shank having a swivelhead and two arms, between which swings a wrenchhead, having a slotted aperture, the open end of which is closed by :1 lug, whichis brought opposite to it;

If it is desired to remove the rods from an oil-well, the wrench is laid horizontally along the surface,"so asto bring it at right angles'w'ith the end of the rod, which protrudes therefrom, and the slot f slipped on to the squared shank o.- (The rod when in this position is shown in red lines in fig. 1.) The second section is then drawn up by the second wrench and removed in like manner; the first wrench in the mean time, having been attached to a third section. This operation is repeated until all the rods are removed.
If, for any reason, the rope should break, there is no danger of the tubing or rods dropping into the well beyond reach, ibr the wrench-heads being wider than the mouth of the well, catch tll0l80ll,ll-I1Il are stopped in their descent.

What I claim as my iuveutiomand desire to secure for the reception of a coupling-rod or tube, in combination with a lug, e, for' closing such aperture and holding the rod in place while being raised or unjointed, substantially as above set forth.
